Hey everyone! In the past few months, I have started creating mindmaps to organize my different marketing campaigns and it has made an incredible difference. I also use mindmaps to organize all of the information that I learn from products, seminars, etc... This helps me to see the big picture and start immediately taking action on what's most important. I use a free piece of mindmapping software called Freemind and it works great. Anyone else here use mindmaps? I would love to hear about your experiences with them and how you use them. |

I've tried using mindmaps for speeches, articles, brainstorming sessions, copywriting, and other areas, but it doesn't seem to benefit me. Everyone who uses the techniques loves it, but I don't think much of it. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I do the exact same thing with Freemind. I also use it for when launching any new website as a massive mindmap checklist. I love the little graphics at a glance I can see any sticking points I'm having, where I am currently at and what I have completed and still see the big picture all at once. I think its great and for anyone who is having difficulty with it just stick with it and play with it. Don't force it to work just let it happen. It took me quite some time to start getting the hang of it to the point where I was using mindmapping almost daily. Quote:

I use mindmapping all the time to get my ideas and projects organized. It works for any project, whether it's for online business or for organizing a Super Bowl party. BUT, I do it with pen and paper. I've tried several mindmapping software programs, but they slow me down. I've found they make me shift focus from getting the project oganized to getting the software to do what I want. So for me, mindmapping software gets in the way when I'm actually in the process of thinking things out. The software programs are great for presentation, though. Mind maps are a really clear way to communicate logical ideas and processes. So sometimes I transfer my pen-and-paper mind map to mindmapping software when I want to share it with other people, or keep it for long-term use. Audre |

We sell businesses, and use mindmaps through the entire negotiation process. Part of MMs are used for the seller, while other parts for the buyer. Strategies are mapped and planned in advance. All our meeting agendas are in the form of mindmaps. I learned the technique at school about 100 years ago, and have used it ever since. We use Mind Manager which allows us to create templates for repeat processes and sub processes. |

Can you guys give me a little outline of what Mindmapping actually is? Did most of you read a book about it and then look for software, or use paper and pencils to implement it. My point is that you must have learned of the concept somewhere. Many thanks, |

I love mind maps being mainly visual it works really well for me to flow with ideas and if I jump to a different component of the project mentally whilst doing the map you just add another branch and keep going. So for anyone like me where the mind jumps all over the place instead of following a logical syntax it is extremely beneficial. |

I just discoverd Freemind myself about a week ago. I couldn't figure other programs out, but this one was a breeze. I was using it in a few minutes without reading help files. When I do I may find some tips. Very intuitive Lambert |

Hi; Do the Tony Buzan books just address the colored pencil approach or are they general books explaining Mind Mapping? I'd like a book recommendation from someone who has read and used the book. Thanks so much, |

I am a very 'visual' person and my whole being is attracted by mindmaps BUT i have never been able to use them successfully and I don't know why. I did find an online service which I thought was pretty good at mindmeister.com - it was at least easy to use! |

You guys are awesome! I would have never imagined this many people using mindmaps. I'm definitely going to have to check out those Tony Buzan books. I also really like Steve's idea about mind mapping with colored pens and legal pad. I normally use the computer, but I think putting pen to paper would help generate even more ideas.

I have been using mindmapping for more than 30 years. The first time I saw it I thought it was a joke! But then the guy doing it explained what it was to me and I have used it ever since. I use it for all kinds of projects from writing, business planning, event planning, etc. It's great and I highly recommend it. I just use paper, pen and colored pencils . . . and do most of my mind maps in an artist sketch book. but I will give the program a go. Thanks for the post and the reminder. It's great. |

| All kinds of funny things are going on with the links . . . even when I Googled it and tried to link directly from their site, it didn't work. Must be their systems down . . . Ike? Maybe. There are a lot of things a little off right now.

Freemind is another one that I discovered, works great (and free). I typically do most of mine with old fashioned paper and pen, but once I got past the tech of the software, Freemind has been very beneficial. -- Mark Hendricks |

Mindmaps on the other hand, feel cluttered, huge, and... I don't know... clunky maybe. Give me colors and shapes to play with on top of it and I completely lose the content I was trying to organize. I end up working on the many ways to make it "pretty"

However, a list only has a "start-to-finish" sequential structure (the order of which must be re-written if a change is needed) and all of its items are given equal status (so the difference between a broad goal and a particular sub-task cannot be easily recognised). I agree that pen and paper are more "at hand" and direct than a computer application, but many people still mindmap with a pen and paper!

I totally concur. For me mindmaps are the only way to go. I can better see, flow, relationships and connections. I use them for organizing, scheduling, writing, planning and idea brainstorming. Mindmapping just seems to work better for me, than traditional outlines. I learned from Tony Buzan's book and enjoy doing manually. I haven't attempted mindmap software though I just downloaded TB's 7 day trial. |

I've been doing MindMapping for a while a couple of years ago and loved the idea of drawing ideas with colored pencils on paper ( I am an artist & very visual) but somehow I never noticed more productivity , more ideas or anything. Maybe it's not noticeable or different than i expected. Perhaps I'll get into them again.

The thing about mind maps is you can do so much with it. I even use it as a To Do list. For my new projects I use it as a checklist and site structure and advertising strategies.

YES! I fell in love with mindmapping last year - I've used Freemind to help me organize thoughts for music I was writing, some scripts I was collaborating on, even as a family tree. I've yet to use it for IM, though, but I think I will get started.

Don't you think tho that it takes up a lot of space? one link will branch out to a few links which will branch out to a few more links, you run out of space really fast. How do you fix that?

I experimented with using mind maps back in the day, and for some reason it never really clicked with me. It seems clearly superior to be able to look at your project lists and see how everything connects to everything else, but for some reason I found looking at the whole web of ideas at once kind of confusing. I think that the "connectedness" of all the ideas on a mind map is exactly why I don't like it: when things are listed out in bullet points, all of the ideas and tasks feel separate, which makes it easier for me to focus on each thing individually. Just a note to anyone who has tried using mind maps before: if you didn't have success with it, it's not because you're doing something wrong, you probably just have a style of thinking that isn't compatible with mind mapping. |

mind maps do help you to clear your ideas out and structure it so that you can follow your actions day by day and when you draw it with different colors, it actually help you to visualize what needed to be done so that you won't miss a thing. It is a great tool |

I didn't understand the benefit of Mind Mapping for the longest time, I messed around with it and thought, "eh, I could just write an outline, same thing". Now that I'm doing videos though, there's specific info I want to include, not a lot of time to do it in, and sometimes the order of flow isn't that clear. Mind Maps make it a lot easier to plot out.
