Default Finding untapped niches

Hey, I've been curious about something. Besides my existing website, the Snohomish Ebook Store, I am kicking around the idea of building a whole new website that is built around a highly profitable niche. I have thought of building an xbox 360 fan site for example, using microsoft expressions 2 (which I recently got) but notice that there are lots of competition in that field and many other ones. Do any of you know of good ways to find and exploit untapped niches? I am aware of sites like word tracker and Micro Niche Finder, but I am on a tight budget right now and can't afford them, and so i will have to find some low cost or free methods of doing so. Are there any tools you have used that helped you to find a profitable niche?

Well, I doubt there are any untapped and profitable niches. Since I don't know
for a fact, I guess you could presume there could be.

I also doubt anyone would tell you how to do this. I think the prevailing approach is
to start with keyword research. Look for a certain monthly search volume. See how
many ppc ads there are for these terms, etc. The ppc ads tell you if there's money
to be made. But that assumes those ads will be around a month later.

There are different schools of thought regarding your question.

One school advises to avoid direct competition with established marketers in the
popular, ever-green niches that contain millions of consumers. The alternative is
to act like a bottom feeder until you have your chops together, then consider
marketing like a heavier gorilla instead of an anorexic chimp.

Another school says screw it. No reason to fear the established marketers. The
markets are huge and there's enough for one more.

Then there are the smaller markets. The subniches.

Yet there are others who advise against being a marketing pioneer. You know,
treading where there appears to be no one else. Some wisdom there as you
may discover later that there's a reason no one else is there. Some markets
have lots of people in them, but they do not buy for whatever reason.

Find markets with people who buy and have the money to buy. These markets
have demonstrated their willingness to buy.

So ok...

Here's a freebie for you and anyone else who reads this. This is nothing new or
earth-shattering. But if you don't know this, it could be those things for you.

Go to amazon and check out the magazines. You can see them in the order of
popularity. If there's a magazine in these markets, it's because it is profitable for
the publisher. As you may know, magazines are tough businesses. So they generally
have their act together in many respects.

You can get ideas for markets, niches, sub-niches, micro-niches... and perhaps
even a nano-niche from them. Ok... just pulling your leg about the nano thing.

I think lots of people newer to IM dream of the undiscovered, untapped, dream
niche just patiently waiting. I used to a long time ago. I spent more time than I'd
care to admit looking for such a beast.

I'm not trying to discourage you. But I'd suggest you consider a number of things
just a few of which I mentioned.

You can use google's external keyword tool, for adwords or something. Ok... here...

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

It's worthwhile and free. Check out google's gtrends if you like. I'll only serve you
one link. You gotta get the rest.

I don't know if that helps, but it should. And be careful in the wso forum. I don't
wanna step on anyone's toes, although I know from personal experience that some
toes I've encountered there should have a hammer taken to them, but just be careful
there. Big hint. Ok? Be as wise as you can be.

Best of good fortune to you.

Lastly... be focused.

Over 'n out.

I highly appreciate KenThompson for sharing your ideas.

The key advice is we need to be focused to have a better readership and client loyalty. We can find too many niches by just spending some hours search but it's better to become master of one than jack of all...

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

There aren't much "untouched" niches, the internet is big remember.
If you choose to get into the xbox 360 niche then you could be at the top of the competition easily if you work really hard on it. And as Mark 2 said, "it's better to become a master of one, than jack of all"

Well scripted Ken... I have read a few ebooks that tried to give me an idea of what you were able to provide in an idle forum post to a stranger with no wallet.

Actually I have just adopted the xbox 360 as my new niche as I have recently started a new Xbox 360 fan site at www.xboxfreak.ws, and it is already getting lots of hits
