Money can't buy happiness, but happiness doesn't pay the bills.

All in all, it was probably a mistake to look for the answer to the eternal question—"Does money buy happiness?"—from people who practice what's called the dismal science. For when economists tackled the question, they started from the observation that when people put something up for sale they try to get as much for it as they can, and when people buy something they try to pay as little for it as they can. Both sides in the transaction, the economists noticed, are therefore behaving as if they would be more satisfied (happier, dare we say) if they wound up receiving more money (the seller) or holding on to more money (the buyer). Hence, more money must be better than less, and the only way more of something can be better than less of it is if it brings you greater contentment. The economists' conclusion: the more money you have, the happier you must be.

Many people who have lots of money tend to be "afraid of losing it", meaning their money "owns" them in a way.

But like my father taught me... "Having lots of money doesn't make you happy, but it certainly helps!"

But it really depends on what you want... The freedom to buy anything you want wouldn't be too bad.
For me, I'll be happy when I can order a smoothie for $7, not like it, and don't care!
As well as taking a cab without feeling bad about it.

Definitely can improve the quality of your life. But, as I always believe: If you're not currently happy and grateful for what you already have in life, then what's the point of attracting or making more?

I've spent some time in a few 3rd world countries, and I know several families and individuals who are some of the happiest around, and yet they live on just a few dollars a day. I believe I know the answer to your question.

Using money to bring joy into other people's lives is where it's at for me. I get so much happiness out of treating my friends and family and also contributing to the causes I believe in. Cool thing is, the more you give, the more it comes back to you. I wish I had learned that a lot sooner in my life.

To me, happiness comes from living in the moment. My cat just curled up in my lap and is purring up a storm. I'm enjoying that. It doesn't matter if I have $1 or $1,000,000 in the bank--I'm getting the same amount of happiness from spending time with a cat who loves me.

Money is important. But I don't let it determine my happiness level.

@Dawn Conelly - In MLM, there will ALWAYS be losers. That's how it's built.
The ones in the bottom of the pyramid will make next to nothing, but there are so many of them, so the ones higher up in the pyramid make loads from them.
There will be a few winners, and lots of losers - And the losers aren't happy.

Partially money can buy happiness , but not for a long time as when everything become available for you then life will lose its meaning .Basically money can buy "joy" as the happenese is an overall state you can hardly reah it , if you told some body a joke you will make him smiling but you will not make him happy , money can purchase a smile for you

but definitly it will not purchase HAPPINESS.

I personally think money can buy happiness to a certain extent. But money alone cannot bring you total happinness. Money cannot buy you true friends. True friends and family is a big factor in anybody's happines, not just money alone.

Money can never buy happiness, but it can help in many ways. With money, you can live life less stress, do what you want when you want, and other things that may make you happy but the ultimate happiness comes from your personal life, your family, the people you are friends with, etc.

Without true friends and family and all the money in the world, you would still not be as happy as having the things you really do love the most that money can not buy.

Money can buy only materialistic things which in turn gives oneself happiness. Money doesn't buy happiness. Happiness is found in ones inner self and not outside. If a person is self satisfied with what he achieves or possesses i think happiness is an integral part of him. Thanks

According to behavioral finance experts (yes, there is such a field), money does buy happiness but the feeling is fleeting. You have to continually earn more money to get the "high," which is why even the super rich keep wanting more and more wealth and possessions.

All things being equal, more money = more happiness for the majority of people.

That being said, a poor Buddhist monk could easily be happier than multi-millionaire stockbroker. But that is comparing apples and oranges.

I think the issue is that people spend their whole life chasing riches, and ignore the other parts of their life. Money is very important but so is good health and relationships.

With out going in to all the variables of the situation.

Money makes me happy indirectly. I couldn't live without it, where I live.

Sleeping under over passes and eating out of the garbage wouldn't make me happy. Although, being homeless in Japan is probably much better than being homeless in North America. At least from what I've seen.

I had a tooth cavity one time. Paid the dentist and he took care of it. You can bet I was happy and still happy I don't have any dental pains.

Yup... indirectly, money makes me happy.

No, I don't think that money can buy happiness. Happiness lies in the feelings of
the heart of human being. It can't be brought even though one has a lot of money. Even it is seen that one who has a lot of money feels unhappy most of the time because money causes excessive anxiety and tension. So, I think money can't buy happiness.

Money can buy only materialistic things which in turn gives oneself happiness. Money doesn't buy happiness. Happiness is found in ones inner self and not outside. If a person is self satisfied with what he achieves or possesses i think happiness is an integral part of him. Thanks

According to behavioral finance experts (yes, there is such a field), money does buy happiness but the feeling is fleeting. You have to continually earn more money to get the "high," which is why even the super rich keep wanting more and more wealth and possessions.

It's because if we lose our money, we can still earn it next day. We must be mastering our money and use it for our wellness not in the contrary being controlled by money and that's mean we are greedy.

All things being equal, more money = more happiness for the majority of people. That being said, a poor Buddhist monk could easily be happier than multi-millionaire stockbroker. But that is comparing apples and oranges. I think the issue is that people spend their whole life chasing riches, and ignore the other parts of their life. Money is very important but so is good health and relationships.

With out going in to all the variables of the situation. Money makes me happy indirectly. I couldn't live without it, where I live. Sleeping under over passes and eating out of the garbage wouldn't make me happy. Although, being homeless in Japan is probably much better than being homeless in North America. At least from what I've seen. I had a tooth cavity one time. Paid the dentist and he took care of it. You can bet I was happy and still happy I don't have any dental pains. Yup... indirectly, money makes me happy.
