What sentence do you see?

Your mindset is perhaps the most crucial piece of the puzzle in getting to where you want to be. Without a strong mindset and the desire to do well, you will find yourself procrastinating hour after hour and without really knowing where it is you want to go.

A recent technique I used to create a positive mindset is to balance the things in my life out on paper. I drew a vertical line through the middle of a page, on one side I had "benefit obtained" and on the other, "negativities eliminated".

Break down your personality (honestly...) traits and where you want to be.

So for example I know that I am often impatient with others and always consciously found myself talking rather than listening. I wrote down what it was I was focusing on; patience. I wrote down what I want to achieve; to become a better listener of others.

The benefits gained would be that I'd be more critical of my own ideas and processes. In turn, I would hopefully make less work of change and would take on board more suggestions. Another benefit would be the ability to formulate better ideas for others. If I listened more to what they were saying, absorbed it and deliberated over it, I would ultimately have more to offer that person.

Negativities eliminated - I would lose that narrow-mindedness I often get when I go head on into an idea. I would also lose a touch of my arrogant side and become more favourable with my peers/collegues when it came to choosing the best decision for the task at hand.

Picture yourself in third person, imagine you're watching a video of yourself in situ and be critical of yourself. Don't be afraid to pick out your bad habits and you will grow stronger as a result. Just by losing a little bit of ego, a little bit of your pessimistic side, you can become more opportunist. Imagine yourself 12 months from now, what opportunities do you want to come your way?

So what did you read first, "Opportunity is nowhere" or "Opportunity is now here"? Honest discussion please... What version did you read, and why do you think that was?

Hi Alex,
I've often tried the same exercise as you but some time ago I tried to think of what I was like in terms of characteristics rather than strengths and weaknesses. My idea is that each so called strength can be a weakness in a different set of circumstances and vice versa but by thinking of attributes as characteristics made me ask myself how I could best use them in a permanently positive way. I often repeat the process (say once or twice a year) and I know that I've made progress but I find that self analysis isn't easy. I've also found that it's no good asking my wife what her thoughts are because they're too coloured with emotion I suppose but I went to a hypnotist over 10 years ago who was in her seventies. She insisted that she was only going to give me three one hour sessions and after that the rest was up to me - that's how I formed the idea of having sufficient knowledge to do anything by the age of 40 provided you can recognise and use what you've got.

Interesting point Don, I agree that our minds are often clouded when trying to be self-critical and the same goes for asking anybody connected to us. It's optimistic I guess, to expect a friend or a loved one to be honest and be really critical of how we act.

Right now I'm trying to completely reassess my self knowledge so that I can sort of mould myself into a better character for my career ahead. At 22, I am lucky in the sense that time is on my side... it's also difficult to weigh up not what's important now but what will be important in say five years time when my priorities will no doubt have changed. I see myself in a planning stage I guess. I'll certainly make a note of the characteristics point, it makes for an interesting outlook.

You both made some good points. I believe the major thing that stops most people from succeeding is being unorganized and the fear of the unknown. Its easier to procrastinate than to do the things that they believe will change their life. Even if the are suffering finacially. We always see people who have made it big saying you can do it to, but if you have struggled most of your life as many of us have it becomes hard to see your self succeeding the way they have. So many people give up before they have even started. Before any one trys any new business they need to get organized and set a mind frame that will allow them to not hold themselves back.

I think the point about being unorganized is right on the button. As I said, most people have more than enough knowledge and experience by the time they're 30-ish to be a success in anything they choose but organizing that knowledge to deliver the goods is the key. Alex, who started this Thread, is only 22 so he's way ahead of the game in his thinking - I'd never even heard of 'self knowledge' at that age!

To be honest, I read it as "opportunity is nowhere" at first glance. I don't know why. Maybe it is the trick of words or my mindset. Though I wouldn't be here working on this stuff if I believed that. Because I believe the opposite: "opportunity is now here".

Interesting exercise. I saw Opportunity is nowhere too. I don't believe it has anything to do with what I believe however. I think it is simply a trick of the mind because of the way the words/letters are spaced.

All the letters are spaced out very close together. The "W" and the "H" might be said that they are spaced out far enough away to separate them as being two words but the "'W", being a wide letter, "stretches" it making it appear closer to and connected to the "H".

The point here is well taken though and a great way to open a discussion of this nature. I most definitely believe that all opportunity is right between our ears. We can have virtually anything we want if we believe. We literally create our own reality.

Excellent exampl to differentiate the mindset and the way one can think. The words are meaningless until a person understands what he realy wants to presume or do. I feel every circumstance will make a person understand about his strength and weaknesses, a person who can convert his weakness to his strength based on the circumstance is the one who will achieve success. Yep, this is something I've found very intriguing recently. It's amazing how simply taking a step back and viewing something in a different light can bring out strengths and weaknesses. What I've found is essentially not much actually matters - we tend to create problems for ourselves and then procrastinate or become disillusioned at the task of overcoming that problem.

When we read "Opportunity is nowhere" and then re-read it as "Opportunity is now here" instantly makes something tick and we then see the same image in a completely different light. Imagine treating every problem like this!

I saw "opportunity is now here" which tells me
that my mindset about money and wealth has
changed dramatically.

I've been reading an oldie but goodie about
how everything we need to be successful
lives inside of us and HOW to tap into that
Infinite source.

A few months ago I'm sure I would have seen
opportunity is nowhere - but thank God the
idea of riches and wealth are sinking down
into my subconscious.

One of my mantra's is this...

"I solve all my problems by placing my
complete trust in the Divine Power
within me. I know that this presence
sustains everything. I now rest in
security and peace."

I didnt even notice there was a NO Where LOL untill i read the whole post.

I am a mindset FREAK and what ive learnt over the past few years is that "You will only earn money to the degree your awarenesss will allow you to keep" Meaning what you see, what you hear, what you feel is what you are THINKING (awareness)

What you thinking mostly SHOWS UP period.

Most of the time what shows up is unconscious. This test is a great test to see if the unconscious is prepared for success that you desire.

It is true that it's hard to be self-critical, but I do think we can get help from those close to us. If they love us, they can often see our weaknesses without distortion, but also without rejection.

When we look at ourselves without outside help, we need to be very alert to the weak points we fear the most. One thing I have learnt over the years: Beware of the person who constantly tells you that they have a particular quality, e.g. warm-heartedness, loyalty, honesy, discretion, intelligence, culture... They are certain to have the opposite quality - or else they wouldn't go on about it. No comment, however well meant, will help them change, because this imaginary quality is central to their image of themselves. Don't we all cherish an image of ourselves that blinds us to parts of our personality?

A strong mindset comes from having three things present in your life all the time:

1. Vision-thats full of passion of leaving your mark on this world, by leaving it a better place then you found it.

2. Purpose-that full of compassion for achieving your vision by linking it up with other peoples vision to your purpose and vision becomes bigger and more meaningful to others who want to achieve it with you.

3. Objective--of having the courage, strength and desire they do the right thing when the wrong and easy looking way is being presented to you. its means doing what is positive and construction for the best possible good for all parties concern.

In rereading Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends... the other day I came across a marked sentence- "If you tell me how you get your 'Feeling of Importance' I'll tell you what you are. That determines your character. That is the most important thing about you." I think we sometimes tie ourselves up with the details and semantics of self analysis. When were you really proud of yourself? What did you do to get that feeling? What did you really feel ( a la NLP)? If you can replicate those times, you will be working from strengths, with happiness, towards success.

Great point and an interesting point. Could you elaborate perhaps on exercises to help this association of good feeling/bad feeling?

I'm getting into NLP a lot recently, I've increased my understanding of body language and voice tonality so much over the last few weeks and this is reflecting in how I handle clients. I'm constantly trying little tricks and tells on them.

For people who don't know, NLP is short for Neuro-Linguistic Programming and is the study of excellence. It basically picks out top body language, mindset and tonality of great speakers/negotiators/leaders. It puts lots of focus on ensuring you are in the best placed position to make calculated decisions and reactions. Very interesting stuff!

As to be expected, the NLP idea has been interpreted and touted in a hundred different ways, so Bandler & Grinder's book, Frogs Into Princes, is a MUST READ, but generally what I am talking about when I say feeling is not the evaluative interpretation of general state (I feel great!), but rather the details of the experience - sounds, pictured memories (images, colors, movement), physiological sensation of any kind and where it starts and where it moves to. It's all about the details of the experience, not some evaluation or "meaning".

I don't think it matters that much, the fact you are on this forum suggests you have a positive mindset

What I do think it does very well is make you stop and think to yourself "oh yeah, opportunity really is everywhere". It makes something tick in all of our minds and hopefully this converts to taking positive action.

If you ever feel yourself struggling to jump a hurdle, re-read that line and think to yourself there's two meanings, the one you take depends entirely on you.

Hey Alex and all, here's another little mind trick.

It's themed around theories of perception, language understanding, context and the type of reader you are. I used it a lot when teaching basic psychology and it never fails to amaze. It underlines your point about how powerful mind is over sensory input.

Ok here's what you need to do.....read the following passage at normal reading speed. After reading follow the instructions below the passage.

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT
OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
COMBINED WITH THE EFFECTS
OF EVIDENTIAL FACT-FINDING

Ok now go back quickly over the passage and count the amount of appearances
in it of the letter which follows E in the alphabet (hint....pronounced 'eff').
Write down your answer and give it another quick read to confirm you are correct.

Now all warriors report back on how many appearances there are!

I believe it is a good exercise to set up your mind in the right way. If you are a positive thinker, you will see the oportunies you have right now. If you think negative you can´t see opportunies and you will never be successful.
In the moment I see too many opportunities and I don´t know where to start. Every evening I am reading a chapter of the Author "Pat Mesiti" with the tittle : How to have a millionaire mindset.
I can recommend this book, because it is so exiting and true, covered in simple words and examples.

Ok Alex guess if I tell you the others will still be able to try it out.

There's 10 appearances!

Your mind doesn't always recognise the f's in the word 'of', as you are conditioned to pronounce it as a 'v'.

Proof readers do best in this test, but it does reinforce your initial point about seeing what isn't there or not seeing what is there!

Also helps to bring home the point to us that we shouldn't always trust our eyes!!

I saw "opportunity is now here" which tells me that my mindset about money and wealth has changed dramatically. I've been reading an oldie but goodie about how everything we need to be successful lives inside of us and HOW to tap into that Infinite source. A few months ago I'm sure I would have seen opportunity is nowhere - but thank God the idea of riches and wealth are sinking down into my subconscious. One of my mantra's is this... "I solve all my problems by placing my complete trust in the Divine Power within me. I know that this presence sustains everything. I now rest in security and peace." Don't we all cherish an image of ourselves that blinds us to parts of our personality?

In rereading Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends... the other day I came across a marked sentence- "If you tell me how you get your 'Feeling of Importance' I'll tell you what you are. That determines your character. That is the most important thing about you." I think we sometimes tie ourselves up with the details and semantics of self analysis. When were you really proud of yourself? What did you do to get that feeling? What did you really feel ( a la NLP)? If you can replicate those times, you will be working from strengths, with happiness, towards success.

As to be expected, the NLP idea has been interpreted and touted in a hundred different ways, so Bandler & Grinder's book, Frogs Into Princes, is a MUST READ, but generally what I am talking about when I say feeling is not the evaluative interpretation of general state (I feel great!), but rather the details of the experience - sounds, pictured memories (images, colors, movement), physiological sensation of any kind and where it starts and where it moves to. It's all about the details of the experience, not some evaluation or "meaning".

Hey Alex and all, here's another little mind trick. It's themed around theories of perception, language understanding, context and the type of reader you are. I used it a lot when teaching basic psychology and it never fails to amaze. It underlines your point about how powerful mind is over sensory input. Ok here's what you need to do.....read the following passage at normal reading speed. After reading follow the instructions below the passage. FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH COMBINED WITH THE EFFECTS OF EVIDENTIAL FACT-FINDING Ok now go back quickly over the passage and count the amount of appearances in it of the letter which follows E in the alphabet (hint....pronounced 'eff'). Write down your answer and give it another quick read to confirm you are correct. Now all warriors report back on how many appearances there are! Bobby

I believe it is a good exercise to set up your mind in the right way. If you are a positive thinker, you will see the oportunies you have right now. If you think negative you can´t see opportunies and you will never be successful. In the moment I see too many opportunities and I don´t know where to start. Every evening I am reading a chapter of the Author "Pat Mesiti" with the tittle : How to have a millionaire mindset. I can recommend this book, because it is so exiting and true, covered in simple words and examples.

Your mind doesn't always recognise the f's in the word 'of', as you are conditioned to pronounce it as a 'v'. Proof readers do best in this test, but it does reinforce your initial point about seeing what isn't there or not seeing what is there! Also helps to bring home the point to us that we shouldn't always trust our eyes!! Bobby
