Default How can I become productive?

Do you ever sit in front of your computer screen for hours "working" and realize you didn't get anything done? How do you get out of that rut?

Nope because every time I sit in front of my computer I do all the work I need to do. By the way what are you doing in front of your computer? You need to have self control on the things that makes you less productive.

I think that is a big part of it. I continually run into brick walls where I simply don't know what my next move is. Tonight, I am trying to set up my website with a WP template that is appropriate for Offline work. My webmaster is busy and I am just writing content...slowly because I just can't get enthused with the way my site looks.

Another problem is I want to hire people, especially warriors, but I often find myself priced out of the services I need. You get what you pay for, and therefore I can't wait until I can pay $200/hour for a real team of experts.

If you want to get work done, try this:

At the end of the day, write down the top 10 tasks you want accomplish the next day. Next, prioritize them.

In the morning, take out your list and start with task no. 1. Don't do anything else until this is completed. You'll get such an energy boost from completing this task that'll be easier to do the second task, and so on.

Well, i do that each morning, but i still agree that you should wriet down your top needed tasks for the day , do it on a note book , and highlight every task you accomplish, so by the day end you can know exactly what you did with your time.

I just bought this cool product ...it was a WSO called the action machine. Its GREAT. It was only $17 and you can set up different tasks that you want to accomplish each day in it and allocate the amount of time you want to spend on each of the tasks. Then it counts down and that puts pressure on you to get things done. Later you can run reports to see where you are spending all your time.

Here is the link Get Things Done!

It`s all about managing your time.

I suggest you to make your "to do" lists (on daily, weekly, project basis).
You can find several programs online for doing it easier (like MindManager, WinPim, and many others), but even simple notepad on your comp (or even good old paper) will do the thing.

Try to "budget" your time for each thing you need to accomplish.
At the end of each day, now this is important part, analyze your list.
You`ll probably have some stuff not completed, but that`s normal, especially in the beginning. Most important is to analyze your obstacles in completing them, modify your list and have everything prepared for tomorrow tasks.
Next day, you`ll have prepared/adjusted and prioritized list and you`ll act upon it.
After that day, analyze what`s done, adjust/modify and prepare next list.
You`ll be amazed how, as days goes by, you`re starting to master your time easily and simply make your things done.

Just don`t get discouraged at the beginning as things tend to look harder than they are.
It`s all about getting yourself comfortable with adopting new habits.

One more thing: when you get blocked or seems like you can`t focus on something, simply skip to another thing, or make chill out to something that relaxes you.
After a while get back and you`ll notice how "dead end" project suddenly goes smooth and easy.

Nothing can`t be done on force.

Find the fun in doing your job.

You can do it.

The problem with me is, I get diverted pretty easily. I mean, I always have to watch the full movie, even if I have just seen a glimpse >.<

Also, I spend considerable amount of time planning and not actually doing. I know what needs to be done, but I just get diverted from it.

I tell to myself "Maybe after this episode of Seinfeld", and *sigh*

Kritesh, I recognise so much of myself in your email...just swap Seinfeld for Friends. So I'm hardly qualified to give you advice but for some reason I'm still typing...What I have been trying to do is to set myself tiny challenges. The mind is like a muscle, you just have to slowly build it up being the theory. So I set myself a 7 day challenge that I couldn't surf the net. In fact, I was banned from all websites except my blog and my email account. That was it. No exceptions. Zero. Not even google if I was stuck on something. Funny, every night I would go home and ask my friends/family 'so what happened in the news today' and we ended up with some really interesting conversations...views on Obama etc.
My next challenge was to work on my concentration levels. I used my iphone timer, and at first set a meagre 2 minutes...all I had to do was concentrate for 2 minutes on the task at hand. That's it. I have since expanded it to 10 minutes, but to be honest, I don't always get there...but since I have come from 2 mins, I do feel progress. Maybe I'll get to 2 hours concentration one day..maybe not, but I'm surprised at how much I can do in 10 min blocks.

Then...accountability. My friend set up a mastermind group and so every month we meet, I feel like I ought to have made progress so I'll find that week before our meeting suddenly I plough thru the to-do list in order to avert my guilt. It works, but you have to have a mastermind group you actually care about being accountable to...if that makes sense.

Finally, I decided to stop beating myself up about my lack of productivity. I was entering self-loathing territory and that doesn't help anyone. Writing my daily tasks and not getting through it used to depress the crap out of me...so...my easy solution...just write one task and be elated when it was done...I even created a mini-silly celebration for myself (part of my mastermind group...we all created a memorable, stupid personal mini-celebration ritual). Funny thing was...when I just had one task to do per day, I would suddenly find myself doing it, and then starting on the next task...because mentally the pressure was off and I saw this as a bonus task...getting ahead for the next day rather than "sigh...I still have 9 other things to deal with'.

And finally, instead of working from home (with my Friends boxset, snack laden fridge), I now go twice to week to the library in the evenings. Not sure about your library, but I go to our main library which has desks, internet access and staff who 'shhh' you at every paper shuffle.

Alright, going to stop typing now...

Here's what I do when I get in a rut...

1). Make a list of the uncompleted projects so I can see clearly with my own eyes what needs to be done.

2). Prioritize these projects into those that need to be done asap (high priority) and those that are low priority because this helps me regain my focus.

3). Decide on the project that is the highest priority and write down every task that needs to be done to complete this project. This way I can see exactly what I need to do to get the job done.

4). The hard part. Doing it.

5). The rewarding part. Every time a task is completed it is ticked off, crossed out, rubbed off. Most importantly it's done and as each step is completed I can see with my own eyes the progress made. That's a great feeling and helps maintain my motivation levels.

6). When a project is completed especially if it's a long project like creating an InfoProduct with numerous bonuses from scratch, I then reward myself, gratuitously. I treat my family to a meal in a nice restaurant or I get my guitar out and we share a few songs together!

7). Onto the next project.

I generally stick to this system, if I find myself doing things I don't particularly enjoy or don't have the time to do then I outsource them. Luckily, largely through trial and error, I've built up some great contacts, although there's been a few setbacks and disappointments along the way.

Hope this helps some people.

Garry.

Try to set yourself small goals for start. After achieving these goals, you will gain enough momentum to tackle bigger tasks. Always remember, if you try to eat fast you might get chocked. The key is eat slowly

Hello Friend,

Both mind and body are carefully constructed machines - each one designed to adapt rapidly to improve efficiency. The concept of personality types is based on this automated function.

What you are experiencing is a trance (or an altered state of perception).

When in a trance, time is altered; it will pass much faster.

In essence, your autopilot programs are engaged.

I work with many clients on this - If you would like to eliminate lost time:
-Avoid mundane tasks (delegate them if you can)
-Keep your mind focused (just as if you are reading something fascinating)
-Take time to get away from your work. Physical activity, slight or significant, will increase dopamine levels in your brain = focus.
-Be aware of your body (posture, breath, sensations) this will keep your mind present and insure these automatic systems do not turn on.

Best,

One thing that really helped me get things done, was to paint my clock.

I bought a cheap wall clock from walmart and painted the hours I should be working yellow (they look like pieces of a pie).

This way when I am doing something unproductive when I should be working, it is painfully obvious, because the hour hand is in the yellow. I can no longer, just on a whim, decide when my work time is, because I can see it.

Especially in our line of work, where you create your own hours, or minutes in most cases, it is extremely helpful.

To be able to become productive, you must primarily learn to condition your mind to be goal-oriented and be efficient. Nothing beats optimism and determination.

Have a goal each day on what to accomplish and all that. This way, you can assess the extent of your daily effort and see the difference.

Moreover, by doing what you love to do day by day such as pursuing your interests can certainly make you productive.

I agree totally. Especially if you love what you do, you'll be able to persevere through the bad and frustrating times (which most of us experience working on the internet). If you don't love what you do, you'll just eventually quit.

Also, focusing on what you've accomplished rather than what you didn't do, or what didn't work is a great habit to get into.

Thanks for your post. We all need encouragement.

You may be a very sensitive person that is stuck in diversity and want to achieve prominent status while keeping your commitments. Don't think that you are killing your time but you are trying to come up as a productive person because you know what is keeping your mind confused.
