One of the keys to success I find is to get dressed before starting your workday.
Getting dressed I notice that I work better most of the time than if I do not dress. Sometimes these small tips I think can change your mindset. Try it a few times to see your results. |

Steve, it's funny how simple yet true and effective your tip is. Something I also noticed that helps with mindset is to make sure the space around your workspace is clean and organized before you sit down to began working. Also, make to-do lists before bed at night so you can get right to business as soon as you get done with breakfast (there's a simple tip, eat a healthy breakfast!)
Thanks Steve!Quote:

Simple but true. If I don't shower and put on something respectable, my brain has trained me to feel like I did back in grade school when I stayed home sick in my sweatpants.

One of the dangers of working from home is that it can be a slippery slope toward wearing sweats in public. And as Seinfeld once said, if you wear sweats in public it means you've given up.

I know many people vouch for what the OP has said... But I prefer to remain undressed while at home... Life's much easier that way for a crazy teenager like me. ;-)

I still have to get up and go to a regular job unfortunately!
However, I heard this works pretty well, I heard to take a shower, eat breakfast and when you'd normally get in the car, go to the office! |

Getting dressed is a great start. Feeling good and positive about what you are doing is also very helpful.
But, the thing that helps me the most is setting one goal for the day. Most of the time it doesn't have to be something big, for example, my goal for today is to set up a Paypal account for a new business venture. Not a big goal but that will get me started and I will have the momentum to keep going on other tasks and it may well be several hours before I get either distracted or hungry! Cheers Anna |

Yes, I really agree. I find my concentration is better and I'm more alert for new ideas. What I like best is to get dressed, go out for a walk and maybe a little shopping for food, and then start ofter "opening up" the day.

It seems logical, getting dressed and all. I usually (if I'm not at work) rool out of bed, have a cigarette and a coffee and crack on. I'll try out the theory, it could only be better I suppose!

I think a mindset shift for me is the actual shower. The water washes away the entire negative thoughts so when I step out I ready to take on the World. A shower truly refreshes me and has me ready to take on the World. When I first started in my business, when I was stressed a quick shower changed everything for me.

A good tip!
But let's generalize it a bit It depends on what your mindset ALREADY is. If since childhood you are glued to the thought that a dress code should be observed so to "be in the stream", "be part of the group you are in", etc., then a certain appearance will trigger a certain state of alertness in you. You'll feel more comfortable with a tie and suit on since your experience at full-day work proved to you that "that's the way to work and be effective". It may help at start. Why not to benefit from some usefull habits we already have? Speaking more generally, try to find your own way to get into the focused state: have shower, walk your dog, clean up your working place, have a good breakfast, choos a goal for the day... The meaning is that you do something personal that puts away everyday staff and brings you to the working state. All set? Go!

Some great comments here. It is hard to define what the dress code is for everyone. For instance one person I know that works at home does get dressed in a tie and jacket.
I do not go that far as I feel restrictive, however nice shirt, comfortable pants, after a shower and a shave makes it all feel more professional for me. Especially when I have to talk to new clients on the phone. This is an experiment that one could try and not really exhaust themselves. Anything that can give you an edge on your presence and mindset is worth a try. |

Nice finding, Steve.
There must be something in it. As Jack Handy noticed: "If you go to a costume party at your boss's house, wouldn't you think a good costume would be to dress up like the boss's wife? Trust me, it's not."

Before I get dressed for the day, I start up my computer. While it's booting up, I make myself a cup of tea. Tea in hand, I review my daily schedule (created the night before) - I make any adjustments and get clear what my MIT (most important task) is for the morning, and make a mental note of any outside appointments I have. If I don't review my schedule chances are I'll start working on something and a reminder will pop up on my computer about a Dr. appointment (or something) I have in 10 minutes. I hate that because I'm not mentally prepared for that interruption in my day.
When I'm clear about my day - I usually take a shower and get dressed. I say "usually" because there's times when I start writing articles or a chapter of an ebook and I get in the zone or something because it will be noon and I'm still working in my pajamas. Most of the time, though, I take a shower after getting clear what's happening that day. But what I wear that day is really dependent on what "hat" in my business I'm wearing that day - and the mindset I wish to create that day. If I'm writing articles, creating squeeze pages or sales pages, I wear sweats or jeans - but if I'm recording a webinar or doing an interview - I dress more professionally and put on make up. Even though I'm not going to be "seen" I create a mindset of presentation and being public. When I'm writing I create my writer's mindset and become fully immersed in my work - whatever it is that day. I need to say that I don't think you have to dress a certain way to be fully present in whatever you're doing - it's a personal choice. You just have to find what works best for you to be your personal best everyday. Cheers, Jillian |

I've also noticed that when I get dressed I tend to be more productive. I've also noticed that what I wear makes a HUGE difference. If I wear clothes that are similar to what I'd wear if I were going to someone else's office, I find that I get more done than if I wear my usual sweats. Excellent advice!

A couple of years ago I had a phone inteview for a marketing job with a car company in Adelaide, over 1200km away. I decided to get dressed in my suit for the interview and found it made me feel more important, more confident and funny enough even smarter.
I still use this priciple today. I find that clothes do maketh the man. Dress for work and you get your mind set ready for work. Dress to go out and work in the garden and you are not mentaly prepared for doing other tasks. As a teacher I have seen the affects of clothing on people, their work work effort and attitude about themselves. So Get up get dressed for success and it will come a lot easier. Mind you there are times I can work quiet well in just my underwear. However my principal has told me to stop as it makes the kids sick.

Yes, I agree. The shower for me is the kick start I need. Whether is doing my normal career or when I am working from home. I have to keep the same routine. If I am working from home I still like to go to Dunkins to grab breakfast first and come back home. Not breaking the normal routine.

May I add that different jobs have different dress codes? Some jobs require formal attire while others are ok with a tee and berms, with flipflops. I'm for real. no kidding.
honestly speaking, my ideal job if i had to work outside would be a place where i can dress the way i like and be comfortable in my own clothes, meaning not needing to wear a shirt and pants and black shoes or etc... of course i'll make myself look presentable, not sloppy, but i dont need a blazer and blingbling to have a confidence and/or mentality booster. anyway i like the idea of being a glamtrepreneur and i like to be one. :P |

I could not agree with you more. When I was a kid, my parents used to say that nobody sees what you may have eaten but everybody sees what you wear. Getting dressed properly is not only important for home warriors but equally applies to regular guys who attend offices. For the regular guys, I suggest dressing up for the part of the next higher position to which you are currently at. Clearly this does not apply to armed forces personnel, who may land in jail if my advise is followed.
