Actually thousands of dollars is really selling my self short, but in an attempt to stay modest
and realistic sounding amongst all the hypey marketers out there here is exactly how I did it. Now I am not gonna expose the niches I did this in, so I will give an example in the internet marketing\ make money online niche NOTE: this is not the niche I used it in but it is universal and can work in this niche and any other niche you have found. Now say you just created a blog or product on marketing. You want to sell as many copies of it as possible. So say you want to grab the attention of frank kern. Goggle search the name of the person you want to partner with. Learn everything you possibly can about this person, now in this case frank probably gets around 500 jv requests per day. He probably doesnt even read them. So what you want to do is grab there attention and develop some kind of relationship first. In this case a little research shows that frank loves surfing and lives in la holla california. So after a little more digging you can probably turn up an office address, p.o. box or some type of mailing address. Now in this example I would go to yellowbook.com and look for local surf shops, my search for this example showed only one surf shop in la holla Now there are two things I would do, first call up the local surf shop and see if they have a frequent visitor by the name frank kern. I would try to find out how often he goes there and if he would recognize him by name\face if they did, I would leave a message for him saying thank you for what you are doing you have really helped my business and I just wanted to show my appreciation. I would then find out the average dollar amount spent per customer, and research the store prices. I quickly noticed that without around 200 dollars us you cant get much in a la holla surf shop. So I would then pick up a $200 dollar gift card and see if they could mail it to him with a message for me, of course the shop owner might deserve a little tip, 20 bucks for lunch or whatever particular hobby he or she was into. Make sure you leave your name and a phone number incase they want to call and thank you. in most cases they do in others you will get stiffed. Also keep in mind you may need to get past somebodies gatekeeper. In that case you would want to butter up the gate keeper with gifts first, and try to goet more info on the actual owner. The main thing to keep in mind is that you never want to pitch an idea to them on the first contact, you really just want to thank them , make them feel good and appreciated. Build a relationship with them and talk about how they inspire you, get them to learn your name, and possibly even mentor you. then after they are all buttered up and like you, which is key they have to like you. Then you are in the position to present your idea to them. Just say something like I was thinking about what we talked about or I was listening to your content, and this idea hit me. then ask them for a few minutes of there time to present the idea. If they like it and it is mutually beneficial your basically in. P.S. If you have any questions on this and how you can apply it to your specific niche\business pm me I would be glad to talk about it with you

Excellent advice.. This is exactly what I did with "The Rich Jerk". Found out that a bottle of Grey Goose vodka might grab his attention. So I bottled it up.. along with my (carefully crafted) pitch and FedXed it to him... attention (my contact at his office). Turns out he loved the Goose, but not my offer, but he did at least look at it.

Did you have to do this with a lot of people before you saw success? |

by alot I am talking about 30 people but the scale of the people I set up deals with were of such a high caliber it only took about 5 solid contacts to get the ball rolling. just remember when you are dealing with people of this nature they are entreprenuer and business minded so if you can prove to them you can male them a large profit with littel work on there part they are highly likely to say yes.

I'm sorry, but if this was any effective in reality, then everyone would have the jobs of there dreams & they wouldn't be doing internet marketing.
I disagree with showering people of "so-called" influence with gifts of endearment, in a secondary effort to try & get them to promote their product for you. For this to be an effective measure as a business strategy, it : 1. Takes a lot more money based on what you are stating -- There's a lot of other costs incurred to do what you are even talking about 2. Time -- It's the biggest time to HOPE that you will even be recognized by these efforts 3. Schmoozing by giving gifts is not a recommended practice in business. I think a better way of doing things is the person that wants to be recognized & get their products promoted is 1. Create highly quality products 2. Create something unique 3. Promote uniquely - 4. Allow for "Industry Leaders" to come to you |

A fine point for others is to also ask themselves; to what extend "bribes" can work with people that already have enough? It works with politicians, but I wonder if "bribes" will keep being passed as a surefire way to getting someone's else friendship. I know I won't if I were in Frank's position. If so, no matter if the end result is $100,000 or converting myself into a 200,000 list building 'good guy'. Oh no! Rather work myself hard from scratch if that's a case. Either way, that's a fine example you gave away Nicholas. It just works. Also reminds me of "Lord of Wars" movie. Realistic stuff. It's indeed a clear, yet transparent example of not just local - but worldwide masses. P.S- Darrin_cooper, I din't remember giving you my avatar. I've the poster of it in my exercise room, I love it too. Definitely read my mind in equal amount of time I guess.

I doubt that many here will use that method but it is food for thought.
Give folks an example of what thinking out side the box is all about. Could take this a step beyond and learn to surf & become a regular at the local beach! |

Better to buy a board for him. More personal. And if he hates it, he can return it before he even takes it. Lol.
I'm headed to La Jolla this winter, My niece lives there, I'll head up to Del Mar and see if I can find him.

First, the title says "no money" and clearly buying a $200 gift card constitutes "some money" even though it is a tiny amount.
Second, if I were the surf shop owner I'd tell you to mind your own business and I would not disclose anything to you about my customers. Third, far too stalkery for most folks. |

it's not exactly manipulating if they say no then fine whatever, either way you have to do what it takes to get people to notive you. do you think oprah just calls people out of the blue to be on her show. "no" people actively seek out being on these shows

Just putting this out there, I love ice hockey and could use a new stick. I like to shop at hockeygiant.com or hockeymonkey.com
That Bauer ONE95 one piece stick sure does look nice.

This concept is sound...the example is a bit off, but overall I think the naysayers should examine this idea a bit more with their own twist.
I've used it in less obvious ways. For example, I've provided some technical support for a few influential individuals as a friendly gesture when they needed it most. They naturally get curious about what I'm working on. Especially if I indicate I DON'T make a living offering that support or service. Meanwhile If you have good stuff it can quickly become a profitable partnership as they discover what benefits you can provide. I can point directly to thousands of signups, and $ as a direct result of this technique. This idea of "buttering up", is actually deadly effective in marketing your I.M. skills to offline businesses. Make the friendly chit chat, inquire about their website, mention off the cuff that you are into websites and marketing online. They naturally inquire, show some results. Offer some free assistance in obvious areas of need, and soon they are ASKING YOU with a laundry list of things they will gladly pay you for. (I've personally tested this approach for fun one day, too) |

Building relationships in the real world is important, but bribing people may not be the way to go. There are other ways of getting their attention.

You don't necessarily have to bribe folks to get their attention. Just send them a package that is unique in design, let's say you sent them a plastic wine bottle, empty of course, thats about a foot long with your offer letter in it that was crumbled up on a yellow peice of paper. The idea would be a "message in a bottle." This is just an example but you have to be creative. The ideas you mentioned are good ideas and if it worked for you, bravo, it may just work for us all. I would approach it differently but I like you idea overall. Thanks for the post.

Years ago I generated a very lucrative business venture by getting someone's attention. I sent them a box with a lightbulb inside, packed very carefully to ensure that it arrived without breaking, and inside was a note. All it said was:
"I have an idea, and I want to share it with you". And my contact telephone number. Nothing else. Of course they made the call... |

I did something similar. I mailed a regulation size basketball. Used a paint pen to write on it. Put my website and phone number on the ball. Also included a handwritten letter with the headline "The Ball Is In Your Court". He was sitting on the fence on a deal I was trying to do for him. The day he got the ball he called me up laughing. And set an appointment.
