Default What does Lil' Wayne have to say about marketing...?

Ok, so maybe I've never talked to Lil' Wayne about marketing, BUT as I was listening to one of his songs today I had a thought that I'd like to share with you.

Now, I know that a lot of rap artists lyrics don't seem to be too profound; however, if you listen carefully to certain artists you will find some amazingly clever metaphors and such (I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true).

So, what does this have to do with marketing..?

Well, there is a line in a Lil' Wayne song that says, "They tell me don't get high, you should try an' make a livin'. I tell 'em I'm a hustla and I'd rather make a killin'."

When I heard that line I thought about my journey through Internet Marketing up to this point and I realize that I wouldn't be where I'm at today if I listened to what everyone in my life was saying. (By the way I'm not condoning "getting high" haha)

I knew what I wanted when I started marketing online and I knew that if I were going to reach the level of success I desired then I would have to fight against mediocrity and constantly push myself.

The reason I'm sharing this with you all is that I know how tough it can be not only starting out, but also throughout the "life" of your business.

Don't ever let up, if you want to attain your goals you have to just go out there and do it.

How's that for analyzing popular culture..? haha

- Tommy

Hey Tommy

Thanks for sharing this line with us. I like how we should be making a killin' instead of a livin' I'm going to shift my focus to killin'.

Another one of Lil Wayne's song I'm Me, there are these 2 lines that go B**** I'm me, I'm me, I'm me, I'm me. Baby I'm me, so who you? Ur not me, ur not me.

I read in the papers one time that Phelps listens to this song every time before he dives into the pool and I can hear why

Don't let anyone tell you can or cannot. Who they? IT'S ALL YOU

I Like little Wayne but when it comes to being successful I prefer to follow Jay Z's philosophy.

"I'm not a business man, I'm a BUSINESS mannnnn, now let me handle my business, damn.

I like what Jay-Z and Madonna transmit trough their music.
Just listen to Madonna- Give it 2 me :

What are you waiting for?
Nobody's gonna show you how
Why work for someone else
To do what you can do right now?

They say that a good thing never lasts
And then it has to fall
Those are the the people that did not
Amount to much at all

You're only here to win
Get what they say?
You're only here to win
Get what they do?
They'd do it too
If they were you
You done it all before
It ain't nothing new

Lil Wayne also raps about killing babies and raping people. Drug dealers love to make a killing as well, should you take markeintg advice off of them? Sorry to be so harsh but these self centered, egotistical, maniacs are no one to listen to.

Tupac was awhole different story than these rappers. Jay - Z, Lil Wayne, etc are all pushed by huge corporations to spread their music, they are part of a brotherhood. Not to get into this discussion, I am just saying. If you had billion dollar corporations behind you, you would also do well.

All you gotta do is take this line from Jay Sean who is now HUGE in the USA..

"I dont live for glamour, and I dont care for fame I'm in this for the love of the game funny how things can change they didnt believe in me then they calling my name now look who cashed in they didnt wanna know me back then but ever since I don gone platinum everything turned around and now the sky is falling down"

Sums it up for me..

Robert Greene did a book with 50 Cent which
is actually quite good - "The 50th Law". It's
worth a quick read.

Edit: Just realized Shawn recommended it!

here's another one from Drake who's also in Cash Money with Lil' Wayne & Jay Sean:

"Pick a lane, pick a lane. That's all I ever heard. But I just wanted to swerve, without hitting the curb."

I agree. here are couple more Jigga lines that keep me motivated..
"Son' said Hov how you get so fly,
I said from not being afraid to fall out the sky"

"Look what i embody
The soul of a hustler i really ran the street
A CEO's mind
That marketing plan was me"

"And we dont really care what you used to say
Unless that effects your future pay
Im on a practice field running two-a-days
So I dont drop the ball when its threw my way"

I can go on and on...

The rap & hip-hop world is full of people who decided they would make it, their way, with or without any support from the rest of the world. People have different tastes in music and fashion, but the determination, ingenuity, persistence and flat-out hustle that it takes to make it in hip-hop deserves its props.

It is all part of the human potential that will work in any field. At its best, this material reminds us that we all deserve to have our say and be heard with respect.
