Do You Believe In Luck?

As for me, I don't believe that someone can become successful by luck or chance. I believe that you just have to work for anything that you want to get.

I believe that luck is a lazy man's philosophy.

What is your take on this?

Depends on what the definition of luck.

If the definition of luck is unexpected miracle falls off from the sky, then I don't believe it.

After enough dedication and effort has been poured into, "something" happen. If this "something" call luck, then I believe it.

Luck is the product of preparation and opportunity. This means if you are not prepared (strategically positioned to receive) when opportunity comes you miss out. So where is the luck?

I believe in luck, but from other point of view. The luck is the result of hard work. When you constantly make actions to achieve your goals, the luck will just find you and help to achieve your goal faster.

IMO I think you need to have some luck. A lot of successful people also stated that. But - if you're not prepared, if you're not looking for opportunities, luck won't find you on your own.

Others have stated it as well: I believe "luck" is simply being prepared and alert for opportunity.

Things that you want to happen are going to happen but you might easily miss the opportunity to take advantage of them if you have not first prepared your mind or devoloped your abilities in advance.

Some say that a poker player needs some degree of luck. However, a successful poker player has simply developed his/her knowledge and skill well enough to be able to understand the odds and play accordingly. Of course if the player gets dealt three Aces, that is fortunate, but the player still has to have the skill to know how to play those Aces.

The better prepared and more aware you are, the luckier you will get.

Luck by itself won't help you if you are not ready. As the statistics show of all the lottery winners going broke again after they have spent all their money. I would rather call it opportunities instead of luck. :-)

I think there is such a thing as luck. But it only plays a small part in success. You also need to work hard and be prepared. You can luck into a chance meeting with a successful marketer who then becomes your mentor, but if you didn't make an effort to be in that place at that time you never would've met that person.

I believe in luck, to an extent. You have to be at the right place at the right time, but for that to happen, you have to prepare. So when you've prepared and are at the right place at the right time, you've increased your chances to be lucky. Your previous preparation that includes the right place at the right time plus coincidence equals luck. (most likely)

Is that luck or just that the person that hit $10000 with their first product was better educated than the ones that did not. Then it is just a matter of them learning and adapting from their mistakes. It is not enough to just have a goal, but you need a well laid out plan to achieve that goal. You make your own luck by being prepared and alert as said many times on this thread.

But it can happen in every industry i guess - some people will have more talent in your area that you do, they will have things come to them easy here, however they could have failure in another areas

Want to find out more about luck. Read 'the luck factor' by richard wiseman. Real scientific studies have proven that you make your own luck. And no single person is luckier than anyone else. It's all about how much effort you put in and your own perception of the situation

I think that talent plays a large part in this too. You can spend years writing up articles while someone finds a common problem and then solves it. All at the same time he learns or knows(intuition) how to sell the product. I don't think luck plays too much of a role I think it depends on how you look at things, but if you feel that pure luck plays major role in one situation, then it certainly plays out the outcomes of our life. Chance happens literally hundreds of times a day...it's up to you what you want to determine what you do with it.

The 1st timers 10K came from identifying what he wanted, learning the solution, then maximizing the opportunities he encountered with the armed information.
    Not so much luck.

I dunno, it's complicated....I think you receive so many opportunities when you give(I've gotten incredibly lucky on this forum....I can't even describe how insane it is.) But the weird thing is that it all came from being helpful, open, and aware of the situations that developed. If I didn't take action in one thing.....I would have missed out on everything.

I wrote two essays on luck years ago. I just want to share a couple of passages from them:

"Most people who live charmed lives have discovered a simple secret: Being leads to having. Somebody once told me, 'If you want gold, you have to be golden.' For instance, you want an income much higher than what you are generating. In order to do that, you have to be a more valuable person in terms of your expertise, knowledge and skills. In other words, you need to be smarter, more knowledgeable and more skillful, and so you have to take action to possess the qualities of the person that you need to be to get what you desire. This means you that you need to acquire more knowledge by studying and to hone your skills to near perfection."

"When you focus on a certain thing, let's say a car or a dream job, you are telling your brain that you want it. Your brain then operates as if it's on autopilot. It tells you how to get what you want even if you don't make the conscious effort to think. Your mind becomes more intuitive and creative. Serendipity occurs because your mind can instantly recognize opportunities for you to achieve your goal -- opportunities that have always been there all along. Now, all you need to do is to take action to make things happen!"

And remember what Virgil said, "Fortune favors the bold!"

So luck is something that occurs, but otherwise to be ignored.

  • I believe that luck definitely plays a part in life, whether it is good or bad luck. There have been times when I had ridiculously good luck, where everything went my way and I could do no wrong. On the other hand, I've also had soul crushingly bad luck at times.

The thing is, you can't control it so there's reason to stress and worry about it either way. Be thankful when you have good luck and enjoy the ride. When bad luck comes just shrug your shoulders and keep going, because in time it will pass.

99% make your own luck. 1% true luck.

For the most part you should rely on yourself (or those you recruit) to make things happen.

But there will be times when you say "wow I got really lucky". It's those moments when you just happen to be in the right place at the right time with the right people.

Depends how you define the word. Do you win the lottery because you were lucky or because the laws of random possibilty just happened to work in your favour. I suppose you could define that as lucky but it isn't something that favours one person over another, it just happens, you were in the right place at the right time and it's fortunate.

Getting rich could happen the same way, you happen to be in the right place at the right time and something out of the ordinary happens.

This is pretty much where luck stops. getting rich through hard work isn't an accident and does not rely on luck in any way shape or form. Sure you can capitalise on luck when it comes your way but that's about it. Many people have these "lucky" opportunities fly straight past them without them even noticing and then say someone else got lucky when they act on it.

Isn't that pretty much the very definition of luck?

luck (-noun): a combination of circumstances, events, etc., operating by chance to bring good or ill to a person.

I've heard many times that 'you make your own luck,' which I believe to a certain extent is true. You can work hard and put yourself in situations that are favorable to success. Surround yourself with people that are successful or knowledgeable. Do things that you believe will lead you down the path you want your life to take.

However...anyone that says there's no such thing as luck I believe is just crazy. Everyone can have good and bad luck. It's what you do with the opportunities that come up that makes the difference.

Winning the lottery takes luck. (and actually buying a ticket of course). That doesn't necessarily mean that this is a luck of fortune in your life. Look how many people have won the lottery, and from that point on their lives have taken a crash course towards disaster. They take that instance of chance and let it run their life, instead of using it to help you down your path in life.

But if you take that one lucky moment in your life, and use it in your favor, to help you succeed in the things you had ALREADY wanted to do in life, then you are going to turn this luck into good fortune.

I've always said, luck only magnifies the qualities, or faults, you already possess.

I believe to a small degree in luck. But I think luck is being given an opportunity. I have had a fair bit of luck in my life but it always comes in the way of an opportunity. It is then the hard work that makes happen the positive results. I also think taking a chance or calculated risk is part of it as well.
Also as Robert Collier has said:
All of us have bad luck and good luck. The man who persists through the bad luck- who keeps right on going- is the man who is there when the good luck comes and is ready to receive it.

It's hard for me to say that I believe in luck, I prefer calling it good karma, although people may perceive it as luck because it seems to come from nowhere. In any case I think that it is only one part of the equation of success. For instance, if you're very talented singer but you live in some God forsaken place and by chance (or your good karma) some producer comes there and happens to hear you singing and want to work with you - that is your luck. But at that point you have a choice to take it, with the hard work it takes to turn it into a success story, or to leave it. Luck in itself will not take you all the way to success.
    Wishing you all good luck....

I believe in the saying that 'luck' favors the prepared. Much of 'luck' isnt really anything mystical at all. Its not just being the right person in the right place at the right time. Its being the right person, at the right place, at the right time, with the right answer.

I can honestly say that luck can be a very important factor in every part of your life, whether it is good or bad luck.
I've had a lot of experiences in my life where I thought I have everything under control and could estimate what the next couple of months are going to be like, but then a very unlikely but (at least partial) life-changing event/opportunity comes up. You can always try to reduce the luck factor by working more efficently and harder, but it will still remain a significant factor of success.

I think luck plays a part in life a bit. My fiance always (and I mean ALWAYS) wins money on scratch off lottery tickets. Me on the other hand...NEVER.

When it comes to internet marketing, I sometimes think luck plays a part in getting Ezine Articles to accept an article.

There have been some articles that I know I have followed all of their rules and put my whole heart into the article...only to get denied. There was one article I published that I really messed up on. I wrote the article in notepad and when I copied and pasted the format messed up. It ended up having 2 identical paragraphs posted one right under another. They accepted it for some reason...? Why? Luck!

I agree with you, luck doesn't apply to IM. I'm not sure it is a lazy man's philosophy, although it probably is to do with laziness to some degree... I would say it's more to do with being scared of failure or lack of self belief... A lot of people think it's absolutly impossible for them to make any money online, let alone be as good as the guru's some day. I say, belief limits what you can and will achieve.... so don't put any limit on your beliefs... In fact go as far as believing that everything that seems impossible today is in fact easily achievable! Whether you think you can or can't... either way, you're right!

it kinda depends on what you're looking for in life -- there's this part of your brain called the 'reticular activating system', the bit that filters out information you're not interested in.

the classic example is: you're looking to buy a new car, and suddenly that particular model is *everywhere*. They were there before, they just weren't on your radar.

the same with 'luck' -- if you look for the positive in a situation, you'll find plenty of positives and opportunities (and like many above have said: it's when opportunity and preparation meet), when on the other hand you're focused on the negative, well, guess what, you'll mostly find 'bad luck'.

nothing magical about it, just what you're looking for in life.

careful though, those who blank out reality and practice "positive thinking" exclusively tend to suppress something (namely reality, which is *always* a mix of good and bad) and (and this has been proven in many scientific studies) tend to be on average less happy, less effective and less successful than those who accept both sides of the coin as equal.

Yes, there just random luck, and also you have to create your own luck - that is you have to create the situations that will allow the opportunity for real luck to occur.

We also say 'you have to be in it to win it'. You cannot find what you are looking for if you are not in the right place, you cannot win a lottery if you don't buy a ticket, but one ticket permits luck to occur.

Great thread, great questions, great replies.

I think that, for whatever reason, luck plays a role in things.

HOWEVER, it seems to me, in my experience at least, that luck tends to show up a hell of a lot more when you're taking massive action.

BUT, since massive action can sometimes waste your time, if you're not taking CLEARLY DEFINED MASSIVE ACTION, that TARGETS SPECIFIC OUTCOMES, you'd have to be pretty precise, as much as possible.

Ultimately, sometimes it's hard to tell whether it's luck, or cause and effect. I just landed a speaking engagement in March for this huge event. Luck?

Or did the person who referred me to the one running the event find some of my videos and audios... and blog posts online? Only to meet me in person at a networking event and talk to me one on one? That happened.

SO? Luck, does happen I believe, but in many cases, cause and effect and human being's brains have a lot to do with it.

Luck isn't anything more than being able to take advantage of an opportunity (good luck outcome), or either an opportunity unaware (bad luck perception).

    Here is an example:

There was a person in NY who won the mega millions. They say however the ticket went unclaimed. The money was never received even though the person won...

so is this person lucky for winning, or unlucky for missing out?

I have had situations happen in my life that made me really wonder if I was cursed, but then just as amazingly had a streak of luck that made me feel truly blessed.
Looking back, most of the things that happened to me, good or bad, were a direct result of my actions and choices, or lack there-of.
So I'm leaning towards no, this is no such thing as "luck", life is what you make it through your actions and choices.

To me, luck is an umbrella word people use instead of saying "I don't know." They don't understand how a man earned a million dollars. Instead of facing the fear of the unknown a word such as "luck" is used. It makes them feel like they know what is going on. But

In reality, theyd soon find out how wrong that is if they saw what that man did to make that million. He earned it.

Every once in a while someone wins the lottery, and this drives on the idea that money is made that way. Too many see life as a lottery. What a dangerous mindset.

Thinking like that, one enslaves themselves to never play the hand they have. Only to beg for a different birth. Unfortunate to see.

I do believe in luck, BUT luck for me it is a consequence of hard work. If you an actor for example and you passed through casting some people may refer to luck, that you were lucky enough to find this casting, lucky enough to pass it and so on. But in fact they didn't know that before you have failed 4 of them, they don't know that you worked hard on improving yourself as an actor.
So luck can be an excuse for people to not to take action. You probably often see people who discuss somebody who became rich or successful, they will say "oh he is so lucky, wish i had so much like as he does"

Yes, luck is an element in life's equation. I reluctantly admit there were times I nodded off while driving-and had a car been coming....

HonestBizPro refers to online poker. Even the best player has to have luck. Many of the top pros disappear from the big tournament the first day. You must have the cards. And only one of the top pros was on the table-and he was never a major threat to win it all. To make a living at poker, like the top pros do, you need to save from your big-lucky-wins and collect appearance fees.

What I am saying is that luck is random. It gets spread around. I would rather make my living from something dependable-like my efforts!

I left the grocery store a couple days ago and as I was walking to my car, I noticed something about 50 foot away on the ground. I walked over to it and picked up a 20 dollar bill! That was just good luck.

But of course I know that I could have just as easily been run over by a speeding delivery truck driven by a drunk driver, which would have been bad luck.

So yes, there is such a thing as luck. However, I do not depend on it for my life decisions. When good luck happens, I accept it and when bad luck happens, I look for the lesson to be learned. Providing of course, I'm still alive!

Also consider the fact that someone dropped that $20, possibly whom would have really needed it and in effect ending up not eating dinner that night.

That would be considered bad luck.

Or may the only reason you found it is because someone was clumsy, meaning there is no "luck" involved.

Or maybe that $20 will be the reason you buy that next ebook that could potentially change your entire life for the better. Then it would be considered good luck.

But now think if you had found the $20 that some poor young lady had dropped. You then bought an ebook with that $20 (otherwise you wouldn't have) and then you become wealthy, whereas somehow you meet with the same unsuspecting lady in the future and without even knowing it you help her.

That would be considered luck.. right?

If you don't believe in "luck" or "chance".

What would happen if I was in the same location as you when you noticed that I was homeless? And you offered me a place to stay.

I wouldn't have worked for that opportunity. You would have just offered it (you can replace "you" or "I" with anyone).

    Wouldn't that be considered luck/chance?

I agree that there is a certain amount of knowledge and preparation necessary when "fate" decides to step in, I also believe that there is something to being in the right place at the right time. I've seen some amazing examples of people who were what some of us would consider "lucky" without having to do much other than show up.

I believe you get luckier the harder you work. I've heard that when you are first starting out trying to be successful, you'll have a lot more failures then successes. It's those people who persist past the failures who end up becoming a success and more lucky in the end. So yeah after hard work, I believe you can become lucky, especially if you have built up a trustworthy credible reputation.

I believe in the old adage that luck is the result of hard work and that the more we do to accomplish our goals the more things will "luckily" begin to fall into place.

Of course there is such a thing as "luck"! You can win the lottery and become a millionaire over a night, that I would define as luck however, building up a successful business from scratch is not luck, this involves hard work and determination

Luck would be something like the opportunitys that presents to you in a given time.

I think that if luck really exist is because we take proper action to benefit from opportunities so we get more and better opportunities in the near future.

I don't believe in luck. The world is made up of probabilities. It really is as simple as that.

Say every bit of "luck" or (probability to be correct) was a small grain of sand. "Life" will throw a certain amount of grains of sand at you day in day out. But "life" doesn't discern between you stubbing your toe or winning the lottery.

In "lifes" eyes they are just two grains of sand from your daily allotment.

"Destiny is all pervaded successive stream of events, made in the great universe- system. With the beginning of the creation- it came into existence. From that time it is fixed, when -how and what have to be happen. Destiny is powerful than God. God is also under control of Destiny."

"At the very beginning of spinning of a notched wheel, it becomes automatically fixed that when it will be stopped and then which notch will remain in which direction, -this is Destiny. It is almost same to the creation. Just at the beginning of the creation, its luck had been fixed automatically." --MahaManas

  • In his book The Millionaire Mind, Professor Thomas Stanley explored how millionaires think about luck and what exactly are their thoughts about it.

Their answers: the harder they work, the luckier they become.

Personally, luck is a product of the chances we take and opportunities we grab. And we say we are lucky because our decisions and resolutions to take risk paid off. And, unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't.

But amidst all these, there are things that are truly beyond our understanding. Sometimes, we take risk and things went great. And sometimes they don't. And after all these, we can't help but wonder where fate and, cliche as it may be, destiny come in. True, the harder we work, the luckier we become. But it is also true, that sometimes even though we really work hard for it, things will not go as we plan - like things are not meant to be.

So sometimes I am forced to believe that there is such a thing as fate - or even destiny (smiles).

I am believed what Tonio Smith said. Just have the lasting desire to achieve something and just go for it and never quit and you will find that your luck is started working. Some said that their luck is good but as they believe , their subconscious attract the things.

Luck has been proven by a number of different testing criteria and methods. My take on what Luck is - is taken from thousands of hours of work with the unconscious minds of hundreds of different people - taking their negative beleifs and attitudes and turning those into positive beleifs and attitudes has consistently returned a siginficant change in their lives.

In other words, when I worked with people to remove their limiting beliefs, their lives improved in ways they could not have expected or foreseen.

So my belief in luck has come about through experience rather than what another person says.

However, my work takes me further into this research as I create products to enhance people's ability to succeed when they set goals for themselves.

Luck is definitely self made and it definitely without any question exists!

Wealthy people are lucky in all sense of the words. But the important work they did is in their mind first. They have a wealth consciousness which naturally leads to having more positive life.

Like attracts like, that is also a fact.

    Be lucky!

Whatever your definition of success is, there are 2 immutable laws that govern this universe that make luck an impossibility:
    1. The law of sowing and reaping.
    2. The law of cause and effect.

Whether someone believes in luck or not is immaterial. The laws will prevail.

Luck is people and opportunity being drawn to you, right?

Well those opportunities are never drawn at random. Think about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - they can barely get out the house without someone offering them free stuff. The poorer you are, the less you work, the less prepared you are for problems, you feel every bump in the road.

Once things get better, you can't avoid good breaks, they seek you out!

I'd say at times there could be some luck involved. But for 99% of the time, it's hard work and being consistent. Then when opportunities show up, you are able to take them because you've been working and taking action.

"Make Your Own Luck" as said by Rob Dyrdek. I believe that this is what we ultimately need to do, if we want something enough. Anything else and possibly included in what we make our own luck in, is a blessing or a tender mercy from God.
