I haven't seen the movie, but I read the book. I enjoyed the book but thought it was a pretty shallow treatment of it. If you really want to know what I think, I answered it more thoroughly in this thread. Post #18.

Ryan, I'm on the same page as Dennis about this. There are some things "The Secret" leaves out. Either the research leading up to it was shoddy, or the editing omitted important distinctions... perhaps to leave room for selling the "missing pieces" later. From what Esther Hicks has said, I suspect the latter. I see five major themes missing. First, some people really do seem to be injured by circumstances they never chose in this lifetime... such as the victims of the Haiti earthquake, or those forced into concentration camps, or civilians killed in wars started by corrupt, evil generals who seized power unelected. To ponder why such bad things happen to good people, some of whom may have been full of loving positive character their whole lives, requires a far greater depth of spiritual understand than "The Secret" offers. Some of these questions simply wind up in mysteries we can't penetrate with logical meaning. At that point one choices faith in a hostile, cold, indifferent, random universe, or one chooses faith in a greater order than we can perceive with this life's consciousness. Either leap of faith is utterly unprovable with science and reason. You just gotta choose what you believe and live accordingly. Second, choices pertain to those who are aware that they have a choice. Some people grew up in abusive households, or lived in politically manipulated economies, that kept them from ever realizing that they even could have a right to their own opinions about the lives they prefer. Some people work very hard to fulfill socially proscribed roles and don't ever really think about whether they would better enjoy a life outside of those roles. This kind of brainwashing can apply to rich as well as poor. The Secret doesn't address these topics at all, or only glosses over them in a slickly superficial way. It's easy to misuse the shallow version of the LOA to blame the victims of evil, abusive situations. Third, the source New Thought material, such as Science of Getting Rich, is not just about your thoughts and feelings. Action is an extremely important part of the original formula! Yes, action should only come from peaceful certainty; but when that certainty arrives, it's time to get up and do what is in your power to physically change your situation into what you want it to be! Fourth, the Law of Attraction applies only to the sum total of our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. If we have deep-seated unconscious feelings of certainty about how little we're worth, those messages can cancel out all our conscious insistence that we want success and should have it already. How well would a human chef be able to serve you if every five minutes, you changed your mind about whether you wanted a sizzling steak or some ice cream? If you told the waiter, "Bring me something beefy and hot, and make sure it's also ice-cold and has a sweet dairy taste?" What dish could possibly fulfill such a confusing request? Until the order was clear, it would be impossible to fulfill. Clearing up one's unconscious blocks or self-esteem issues is an important precondition to making these requests clear. Fifth, the Universe does want to help you but would prefer to help as many people as possible. If your vision is just of your own thrill and power, it might be fulfilled through the LOA; but if your vision is of building a way to serve and help the lives of countless people, with a portion of that returned to you as your reward, the outcome is far more likely. Those are some points I think really need to be added to "The Secret" if you want a balanced perspective. Chris |

The movie 'The Secret' is an attempt to spread information about universal laws and in particular, the Law of Attraction. While it does a fairly good job, it misses out on something fundamental (or at least it doesn't give this topic as much visibility as it could have) Taking Action The fact that you've got to take action just, in my opinion, isn't emphasized enough and so critics claim that the whole thing is new age mumbo-jumbo. Can you blame them. It's like trying to explain the Law of Gravity without mentioning that if you jump off a high building you'll probably not be able to do it again because you'll have cracked your nut (your head and not the other 'nut')! |
