I know there are a few folks who have read the book in this forum, does anybody think they know what it is? I've read the book so many times, I have some ideas. But i'd love to hear your thoughts! |

OO! Wait, isn't this one of those things where if you tell someone what the secret is then they won't believe it and be doomed to failure forever Hahaha, I think everyone has a different idea what the secret is though, and I think that as long as you really believe you have found it and it really works for you... then you have.. |

I'd suggest you read it again... slower. Sounds funny but sometimes that's what it takes. I used to think I need to get through as many books as I can to make the most progress. But now I try more to get the most out of the books I read, in reasonable time. And really, I think if there was a flat out, simple "secret" that they just jam down your throat (kinda like the new secret lol) then people wouldn't get that much out of it. |

Sometimes a book is like a zen koan... The Secret is really something that you have to understand for yourself. While it is easy to talk about it, until you have truly grokked it to the core of your being, it remains just so much noise.

Thanks for the feedback, I've had this book in my possession since I was 19 and at 30, I still am not quite sure what it is. Well as I get older I do think it means something more than it did in the past. But I'm just curious what you guys think. Personally I feel it is 100% faith in something that has to happen. Total belief. |

For me it boils down to what Napoleon Hill calls "Definite Major Purpose" The thing that you have as your very clear absolute purpose on this planet. He says you should repeat it before you go to sleep and only share it with those closest to you.

Read the chapters and ponder Grasshopper! After the time of thought, thoughtfully answer the questions. Take time to read the book and find the underlying currents. They you will fins the "secret". You need to understand that this book will be different each time you read it. Alas, there are many secrets and most are in plain sight. ![]() (was that Zen/Mr Miorgi enough?) |

Here are the 13 Success Principles as Napoleon Hill outlined them. Desire, Faith, Auto-Suggestion (same as programming your subconscious mind), Specialized Knowledge (being an expert of something), Imagination (visualizing your goals/dreams), Organized Planning, Decision, Persistence, The Master Mind, Transmutation, The Subconscious Mind, The Brain and The Sixth Sense (intuition) Napoleon Hill spent 20 years studying the most powerful and influential 500 people. He found all of these people had something in common. They experienced or had done these 13 success principles. The book is more of understanding these and then feeling them in yourself for the most part. Some of these principles may need to be practiced to be developed, understanding may not be part of it. For example the suggestion that you give to your subconscious mind doesn't necessarily need be understood but done. Once you keep doing that your mind will start to believe it and that's when you start to take action which intern will help you achieve your goals that much sooner. |

I was going to write my own response but then I saw what Mark put here Quote:
In my opinion, this is exactly what the "secret" was. Once you identify a definite purpose, you can essentially organize the rest of your life around fulfilling that purpose. I have used this personally and so far it seems to be working well for me. I am very happy with my results.

To be honest most people have read this book, but nothing is going to happen by doing nothing. It starts with thought first and then by taking immediate action you get that idea out and things will start to progress and your will be in the zone of making a lot of money.

The secret in "Think and Grow Rich" is simple but not necessarily easy to accomplish. That's why Napolean Hill spent 20 years of his life creating the book and interviewing hundreds of real successes to verify what he was told by Andrew Carnegie. Thoughts are things. That's it. Really!
PS: I collect Napolean Hill memorabilia. I have private newsletters from Napolean Hill where he states plainly the message from his premiere book, and his frustration with people who have read it over and over and still don't get it. Rather funny material.... |

From the Title itself, Think and Grow Rich teaches us to let our minds dominate our actions by creating positive thoughts and eventually take action! No one will never want to be rich I guess and with this kind of globalization that we're having, our thoughts should be strong enough to visualize and plan for the better and not waste every precious time to start making money. |

The secret is that after reading this book and The Answer I feel very turbocharged and ready to succeed in my business ideas which will make me accomplish everything else I have on my vision boards. It's a hugely powerful emotion, stronger maybe than love. Since February my Adsense revenue is up 500%. That's the secret of this book. |

I agree with other posts that the whole secret is about your "mindset" and what you set yourself to do in life and how you can accomplish it. Napoleon Hill states that "Our only limitations are those we set up in our minds." I agree that you should read the book again and absorb the 13 Principles, which is also posted by Thinker1. You may also want to start from the last chapter (Chapter 15) - How to outwit the 6 Ghosts of Fear. Read that and go through the self analysis towards the end of that chapter and once you go through that start reading the book all over again. All the Best! |

I think writing your goals down with pen and paper is one of the most important things you can do. Can't remember where I heard this, but the act of writing them down brings them from the world or potentiality into the physical world, thus making them "real."

Hi there to you all, From my experience, and practice of what I have learned from the book I beleive it is about the fact that Thoughts are Things. In addition to that, it is about constantly learning from the book. What do I mean by that? Quite simply, that you need to regularly be reading it, as you will pick up gems each time. It's just like that, and takes regular reading, and practice of all you learn from it. |

I 'think' that because we are all on our own journey the secret is whatever it needs to be for you in your particular situation. Have you ever read a book and then gone back and read it again at a later date and found a different message/s to what you thought was there the first time. Did the book change or did you change? |

I think there were many secrets in Think and Grow Rich. It's been around for decades and I bet when it first came out over half of it was a 'secret' for the people reading it. Personally, what I have taken from it, as well as many others, is Major Definite Purpose and the idea of a Mastermind Group. Those were the big 'ah-ha's' for me. |

The book points you to many different skills, some of which you will already have, some of which you won't. The secret is probably to find the things you personally need to work on - so it will be different for each person.

I'm there with you on that one. If I had to summarise the book in one sentence, that would be exactly it. Thoughts are things. It took me awhile to really "get" it. It's easy and hard at the same time! If you become a bit more aware of your thoughts, you realise how much of what we think is not positive. Easy to understand, not so easy to change, especially at first. But it does become MUCH easier with practice. Every time you find yourself thinking of a negative possible scenario, ask yourself how you would prefer it to be. Every time you think of yourself in a negative way, change that in your mind, and take steps to change your habits or whatever you think needs working on. The thing is, the mind is not stationary. If you don't force yourself to think positive, the mind wanders to the negative side -- and let's face, one only has to watch the news to sink into gloom and doom, not to mention the problems we all come up against in our lives. Cheers! Tat

I found a copy of Napoleon Hill's 'Master Key to Riches' in my local library, this is an excellent book too, especially as it is more focused on the principles of attracting wealth. I am not sure if it is available for free anywhere but may be worth a google? |

All the responses are great and I agree with them all . I'd just like to add just remember if you can think it up you can have it. I have the book and love it. I've read it many times over and over again. It has a great deal to do with creating a positive mindset focus which can be developed.

I think it's more of showing a different perspective or pointing out another way of looking at things with optimism that can help us achieve things we want. Anyway, what a coincidence as I had just pulled out the book this afternoon to reread some parts of it and sort of gave me an 'aha' moment.

1. Through argument - a story, a discussion, a great book read over and over such as Think and Grow Rich (you get the idea) 2. Through hard evidence - like if you put your finger over a flame you will be able to totally believe anyone who says that fire burns. Now, I'm sure that you would agree hard evidence trumps mere argument any day. So the real question is: How can I create authentic belief in myself (that "I can be a success" for example) through the use of hard evidence? For the last 80 years or so those who promote the great works of the original personal development pioneers, such as Mr. Hill for example, have been trying to convince you that the main argument that's carefully laid out and expertly crafted in these works (as well as in all the derivative expressions of it) is enough in itself to deliver the goods. Because of this it's not surprising that you - and many millions of others like you - are still found wanting. It turns out that the argument that these books espouse - which are great works indeed so don't get me wrong here - only seem to work for the lucky few. Maybe 2% to 4% of overall readership. That's because the argument itself is mostly based on the success stories of others. It is their story not your story so all it has power to do is resonate in your thoughts and thoughts, as we know, are way too changeable in today's over-stimulated world. The idea that "I did it and therefor so can you" is powerful motivation but, unfortunately for millions of readers, that's not always good enough to get them over the first few tough challenges they run into so they give up. Hard evidence has to be felt by you personally, not just in the head brain, but through the physical nerve endings of the gut brain (enteric nervous system). There are sound reasons for that and I've spent many years studying them. I have proven in my testing that head-based motivation is a lot weaker than agut-based drive like persistence is for example. More power to you my friend.

TAGR teaches that life follows the direction of your thoughts. Choose your thoughts and you choose your life. The error is to choose thoughts based on appearances. Hill discusses how the keys to success are states of mind and have nothing to do with outside conditions. Thoughts are things, and they become tangible, touchable things when held in the face of circumstances which don't conform to them. This book and Bob Proctor's teachings were my inspirations. I strongly recommend anybody going into business for themselves to read and study TAGR on daily basis. RB |

Just read it - my "holiday" read Hill's words are true! I also read (and practice) Charles F Haanel's "The Master Key" which is pretty much the same philosophy, just a different way os saying the same thing. To the OP... I suggest you read Haanel's book too (ISBN 0900 604050), then compare & integrate/apply the two; each will give you a better understanding of the other. The "secret"? (explained better - but more profoundly - in "The Master Key") is simply about how to use your mind by the power of autosuggestion, and how/why autosuggestion works. As I said, what you don't understand from one book, you'll find in the other. hth |

The law of attraction. Visualizing the things you want is so powerful that the very universe will change itself to accommodate your wish. There is also a movie called "The Secret" that portrays the same basic concept. It really is powerful stuff. |

I personally believe that there's more to LOA than Napoleon Hills wrote. The steps and methods laid out in Think and Grow Rich, as I see, are merely ways to "tune yourself in" with the Universe. They are just the beginning, not the ending, thus shouldn't be overly emphasized on. Despite scientific approaches does help in understanding LOA, it's more a spiritual thing. You get it, you get it. You don't, you don't. Focus on our mental development, and we will get there naturally. If I have to put it into words, LOA is simply the manifesto of our minds. We attract only like-minded people. So turn around and look at your best and most closest friends, are they what you want to become? Are they, in your own term, successful enough? If not, go hang out with people you want to become, so you can change the way you think and become one of them. Then you'll start to attract more of the same kind of people. Yea... I know this has been said a zillion times by many others.. but geez.. it does work like a charm.. ![]() At the end of the say, we are what we believe, that's for sure. ![]() Just my 2 cents. |

For me "the secret" is that he (or she) who wants things most (what others have called 'burning desire') will get what they want. I think the story early in the book about the girl asking for a quarter for her mother and insisting on it and the full-grown man ending up giving it to her shows this. I read of a more modern day example of this phenomenon, where a 70 or 80 year old woman was accosted in her apartment elevator by a young healthy man who attempted to steal her handbag and money. Anyone would assume that the young man would be the victor. He had stolen from old folks before, but she was bound and determined that no one was going to take her money and she beat him off and sent him fleeing the scene wounded in some way. I don't remember the details. This made her quite a local celebrity and it was written up in the paper which is where I read it. Why did the old woman and the little girl win? because each wanted what was being fought over more than the other person involved. They would not be denied (or as others have stated here, they were determined to keep doing whatever it took until they achieved their goal). I really like that you posted this thread. I had a year or two after I first read the book where I didn't really feel that I had a sense of what "the secret" was -- that which the book had said would be revealed to me. And while the answer might be different for each person, I find it interesting and helpful to hear others' views. Anne |

I read somewhere one time that "if you want to make something really secret, make sure that everyone knows about it". This meaning that the "secret" that is in the book, is not secret a all. Everyone knows it, and this is why it is so "secret". Because no one gives it importance. You know it, I'm sure, but still you do not realize it is the key that opens everything. Start thinking of successful people in your life, and maditate on how they became successful. When you see someone who is successful, see what makes him different from everyone else. This is how I realized the secret in the book. When you will see it, it will hit you like a thunder, believe me. |
