Your Favorite Motivational Movies

We had a great thread at the "old Warrior Forum" with several great movies listed. Well we have many new faces and probably new movies out since that thread.

I am looking to add some new movies to watch but also to add to the Motivational Movies Squidoo page from the old list of Warrior movies. Pursuit of Happyness is ranked #1.

I will start with a few of my favorite movies: Rocky, Rudy, and Pay It Forward

The Secret, and The Lord of the Rings...

The Lord of the Rings may seem like an odd choice because it's a fantasy movie but there are a couple of lines in the movie scripts which have really touched a chord in me and they are:

In The Two Towers:

Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

and from The Fellowship of the Ring:
Frodo: I know what I must do, it's just that... I'm afraid to do it.
Galadriel: Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

I've watched "The Legend Of Bagger Vance" several times now and still find it moving. It's about a golfing competition between greats Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and a talented amateur golfer (R. Junuh) from Georgia.

It was directed by Robert Redford (based on a 1995 novel of the same name by Steven Pressfield) and has strong influences from the Bhagavad Gita.

Bagger Vance is a spiritual guide in physical form that urges Junuh to get his act together, and find calm focus in the moment to bring out his abilities.

The scene where Junuh imposes a 2 shot penalty on himself (though no one else had seen the accidental infringement) is actually based on a similar incident by Bobby Jones in the US Open (1925). Jones lost that tournament by 1 stroke.

At that point in the movie, when Junuh takes the penalty, Vance decides he is no longer needed and leaves, though the match is unfinished and in the closing, critical stages.

Inspiring.

Movies can be so personal when they strike an emotional cord, we all know that. "What Dream May Come" touched something inside of me, then still years to know more.

Love the Bagger Vance movie... The Secret... Then since I'm also a lover of action flicks (I'm a guy) "Saving Private Ryan"

A movie that I doubt many would could inspirational, but one that resonated with me very much at the time was The Matrix. It was a time of awakening... a time when I was searching for an answer.... that all is not as it would seem.

Not exactly a movie but it's a japanese TV series called 1 Liter of Tears. Probably the saddest thing I watched my entire life. Just teaches you to appreciate the things that you have and just learn to appreciate life itself. Very inspiring...

The first half of The Million Dollar Baby was quite inspiring, but again its a personal choice.

I wish someone would make Lance Armstrong's autobiography, Its not about the bike..My journey back to life, into a movie. Now THAT would be inspiring!

What a great post! I would say my favorite movies are:

The Secret
Pay It Forward
Flash Dance

My last choice, "Flash Dance" may seem odd. I remember wanting to buy my 1st house when I watched it for the first time. I was inspired so much by the dancer's determination to get into the dance school against all odds and she did it. The next day, I called my realtor and took action and moved a couple of mountains and bought my 1st house. Mind you in 1983 the interest rates were as high as 17%. I did some research and got a great interest rate. I also more then doubled my money when I sold it years later.

Yes, Flash Dance was great. I remember dancing my heart out to "Flash Dance...What a Feeling" (Irene Cara), which won an Academy Award for best song. The critics didn't like the movie and it got poor reviews but proved to be a sleeper hit and was the 3rd highest grossing movie in the U.S. for 1983.

There are too many for me to name...

However, I can say that sports movies tend to be the most inspirational IMHO. I absolutely LOVE sci-fi movies and how they can convey messages about honor and bravery, but they aren't real. Sports movies are often based on true stories, and they make you feel like you can overcome any obstacle because the protagonists did as well.

and I know this is not a movie - but one of my fav shows from America on Foxtel is Extreme Makeover-Home Edition!

The old movie, "Captains Couragous". That has resignated with me since I was a kid. Spencer Tracey, Freddie Bartholomew...a coming of age movie that teaches a spoiled kid to become a man. I love that movie!

Just a few recommendations off the top of my head:

The Ultimate Gift...book by Jim Stovall made into a movie)

Rocky...even though you know what happens, still stirs the emotions

Office Space...should inspire you to get out of the ridiculous corporate world of cubicles and constant "re-organization"

The Terry Fox story. Great movie! Usually, I don't cry when I'm washing movies, but with this movies it's a different story.

It has to be Pursuit of Happiness without a doubt.

For anyone starting out with their own business this film is a must and even more so if you are doing it for your family like me. It just shows that you can really make a difference in your life if you want it enough.

But a less obvious one for me is a film called True Romance with Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette and a great list of stars. It is a rollercoaster story where they get into loads of trouble but their love for each other pulls them through.

It sounds rubbish when I describe it but it really isn't.

"Thunderheart" - One of my all-time favorites with Graham Greene and Val Kilmer.

"Star Wars" - Talk about human mythology and the ultimate struggle between the light and darkness. Excellent!

"Rocky" - Definitely an inspiring move for me too. Will never forget when it came out in the theaters.

When ever I need to be motivated I watch, "Men of Honor" with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro. I recommend this movie to anyone who needs a boost.

Although it's not meant to be an inspiring movie - "21" certainly inspired me last year.

When the main character is asked why he should be chosen to go to Harvard (or Stanford -can't remember which) over the other candidates - then the whole movie is about what he achieved in LIFE rather than in academic qualifications - it certainly made me think that I should be looking at how I limit my own life by thinking about what is possible.

Excellent stuff.

For me it's got to be Rocky, Jerry Maguire and Shawshank Redemption. Rocky is a timeless classic that shows how even starting from humble beginnings anyone can rise to the top of their profession. Jerry Maguire had a lot of really good one liners in it that I will never forget and make me feel good whenever I watch it. Shawshank Redemption shows how a never say die attitude against all odds can bring anyone back to the top and enjoy freedome and prosper again.

Just finished watching the Legend of Baggar Vance and I liked the movie but didn't really, really love it like I thought I would. My hopes were probably too high. Thanks for the recommendation because my wife and I did enjoy it.

Looking to watch Men of Honor next based on Christie's recommendation.

Anyone else with some motivational movie recommendations for us?

The Spiritual Cinema Circle mentioned above is a great recommendation.

I notice that the feature length movie distributed this month is about the life of Louise Hay, founder of Hay House Publications.

One of the founders of this site won an Academy Award for a short film, so they really know movies, especially inspirational ones.

Banzai - starring Michael Keaton and a bunch of japanese guys and it's about a Detroit automotive factory taken over by a Japanese corporation. Clash of corporate cultures that lead to labor disputes, management problems, and regaining honor (may it be Japanese or American). Managing people is a lot harder than machines and money. Learn to adapt.

Stranger Than Fiction - Will Ferrell was at his best as the man with that tick-tock precision when it comes to his habits both at home and work but realizes that he must face imminent death and live life fully beyond what he does as an IRS agent. What makes it even more beautiful is that he finds love in a girl that abhors his profession. Sometimes a story is like life, it needs a makeover.

The Godfather series - How you treat your family and the people that work for you reflects how you handle them, to the pinnacle of success or to damnation in achieving it. Business is business. Nothing personal.

Revenge of the Nerds - what can I say? I root for the underdogs who know better but get marginalized for the simple reason that they are, very special in their own right. Don't take crap from anyone who thinks otherwise and do your thing.

For anyone starting out with their own business this film is a must and even more so if you are doing it for your family like me. It just shows that you can really make a difference in your life if you want it enough. But a less obvious one for me is a film called True Romance with Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette and a great list of stars. It is a rollercoaster story where they get into loads of trouble but their love for each other pulls them through. It sounds rubbish when I describe it but it really isn't.

When the main character is asked why he should be chosen to go to Harvard (or Stanford -can't remember which) over the other candidates - then the whole movie is about what he achieved in LIFE rather than in academic qualifications - it certainly made me think that I should be looking at how I limit my own life by thinking about what is possible. Rocky is a timeless classic that shows how even starting from humble beginnings anyone can rise to the top of their profession. Jerry Maguire had a lot of really good one liners in it that I will never forget and make me feel good whenever I watch it. Shawshank Redemption shows how a never say die attitude against all odds can bring anyone back to the top and enjoy freedome and prosper again.
