Success Secrets : Never give up!

Author Michael Jeffreys personally interviewed 15 top motivational gurus in 1997 for his then upcoming book. After talking to gurus from Brian Tracy to Dr. Wayne Dyer, he distilled 8 Secrets to Success they all agreed upon. These secrets are still good today and are as follows:

1. Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life – In a society where people blame everything from their parents to the government for failure, those who don’t buy into this mentality or succumb to the “victim” thinking succeed. To blame something or somebody outside yourself is saying they have control of your life and not you. Someone else’s opinion of you doesn’t have to become your reality.

2. Live Your Life On Purpose - What separates motivational thinkers from the unsuccessful is that they believe they’re doing what they were put her to do. The difference between this and just living, is that the latter is just getting through the week with the least problems. But when you live your life on purpose, your main concern is doing the job right. For the entrepreneur this means finding a cause you believe in and building your business around it.

3. Be Willing to Pay the Price - Be willing to pay the price for your dreams. Wanting a big house, a luxury car, and a million dollars in the bank is all very nice, and everyone wants these things – but are you willing to pay the price to get them? This is one of the major differences between the successful and unsuccessful.

4. Stay Focused – Every day we’re bombarded with hundreds of tasks, phone calls, messages, and everyone competing for our time. Focusing requires giving up something in the present because you are investing your time in something that will pay off big-time down the road. Jack Canfield and Mark Hanson were turned by 30 publishers when they submitted the first “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book. Instead of giving up, they stayed focused on their goal and did four or five interviews per day for radio, TV, and newspapers, for five days a week for a whole year. Eventually, a small publisher decided to take a chance, and of course now it’s a best-seller that spawned an entire series that have sold more than 10 million copies.

5. Become An Expert in Your Field One striking factor all successful people have in common is how seriously they take their profession. They strive to be the best at what they do, and do almost anything to improve. If someone followed you around all day with a video camera at your business, would it be a tape you’d be proud of or embarrassed about? Make the decision today to work at being the best in your field. How? By finding out what the “best” in your field are doing, and do what they do.

6. Write Out a Plan for Achieving Your Goals - Write out an action plan/map for how you’re going to achieve your goals. Trying to reach your goals without a plan is like trying to drive from Los Angeles to Chicago without a map. A goal that isn’t written down is merely a wish or fantasy.

7. Never Give Up - Never, never, never give up. When you’re fully committed to achieving your goal, giving up is not an option. You must be willing do whatever it takes to make it happen. The power of perseverance is an awesome force. As someone once said, “inch by inch it’s a cinch”. Think of the lowly inchworm – if it pondered the length of the trip from start to finish before it started, it probably would never move. To a worm’s point-of-view, the garden path must look like a trip to Mars. Never give up! Keep on going like the Eveready battery bunny, and pretty soon you’re there.

8. Don’t Delay - Nobody knows how much time they have left to accomplish their dreams, and we must remember that we don’t have forever. Thanks for the great post. You and you alone are responsible for your life and nobody else. The most important advice "Never give up" and "stay focused" are very down to earth suggestions. Unless you have the grit to go on despite any obstacle you come across, and have the will to achieve your goal, you will never taste success. All points mentioned plays a part in success. Missing any one of them, one can feel he blockage.

I have this however as my very own first success secrets - Be GODFUL.

I have received countless number of success instructions from HIM when i wait upon HIM. When HE gives the instruction i act on it without looking sideways or doubting. Getting these instruction requie you to be GODFUL.

I love every one of these Success Secrets and I have used all of them to build my business where it is today.

1. Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life –

This is a very important one I believe because we have to be responsible for our actions and we have to show people that we are responsible not only for ourselves but also for our business.

2. Live Your Life On Purpose -

Motivation, Motivation, Motivation. Everyone needs to have a purpose and if you have a purpose you are driven.

3. Be Willing to Pay the Price -

This goes back to the saying put a little elbow grease into it. You have to put into your business to get out of your business.

4. Stay Focused –

Every day make a list of what you need to do, how you can make your business even better and what you need to do to get there. Then focus on completing that list.

5. Become An Expert in Your Field

You become an expert and pretty soon you will have people beating down your door.

6. Write Out a Plan for Achieving Your Goals -

This one goes with my comment on number 4 you need to make a plan of attack and follow through. Start with small goals and keep on moving up.

7. Never Give Up -

All I have to say on this one is exactly. Never ever give up. Don't give up on your dreams.

8. Don’t Delay -

Because if you delay someone else might start doing what you were going to do.

I had a friend who used to say, “Today is a check – cash it! Yesterday is an I.O.U. – forget it! Tomorrow is a promissory note, don’t bank on it!” I think that’s a pretty good summation of life, so go out there and cash in on that “today” check.

So few people take responsibility and, as you say they want to play the victim. Sadly this behavior seems to becoming ever more ingrained in our society today. I've worked with many extremely wealthy (Think net worth in the many 100's of millions) people in my career so far (sadly, not one of them yet, but consistently working on it) and many of them have similar traits:
*They work very hard
*Many have failed repeatedly, or tasted only limited success until they ultimately achieved their goals.
*They tend to be planners with better than average organizational habits
*They're cheap, and will not part with a penny until they're convinced it's a good value. I've seen them purchase very expensive luxury goods, yachts, and $15 million homes, but only because they were fairly certain they got a good value for their money.

As an contrast, many young people that I've hired in the last 10 years seem to have the entitlement attitude firmly stuck in their heads. "CEO tomorrow? Why sure, after all, I graduated from high school, didn't I?"

These are all very important points. I think #4 is a real big one, especially for newbies. I know from personal experience about getting caught up in information overload. When a person is trying so hard to break out of their JOB and become financially free, the amount of make money information is a bit daunting.

Also, I tend to think that many entrepreneurial type have a least a touch of ADD (I think there are some studies to support this), therefore making the skill of focus even more important and challenging.

Hi Ken,

I think the lack of focus that comes with being a newbie is that they don't know what the heck to focus on. Trust me... I have been there too. You think one thing will work until it doesn't. Then you go on to the next thing in hopes that it will make money, then the next.

Those times sure were frustrating.

I think for newbies, it will really help if they can find someone to guide them through the first hurdle.

I totally agree. Having someones guidance is definately the best way to go. But with all the information available, it is difficult and time consuming to try to figure out who to listen to and follow. Another thing I see and have experienced is that it is difficult for a newbie to find someone to guide them at a reasonably affordable price. I bet a lot of newbies are starting out with very limited budgets and or have a big debt. That's where the "never give up" mentality is definately important to keep sifting thru the making money info.

I think this forum is so valuable as a good starting point for a lot of good information and advice and everyone seems really interested in helping each other.

The amount of stuff to learn can be overwhelming, especially at first. But you'll slowly get a sense of what arenas appeal to you. Then you can hone your studies to target what means the most to you personally.

I totally agree on everything in your article! The problem, as I see it, is the "good enough syndrom". When you become stuck in this syndrom you don't push yourself anymore, hence you don't evolve. And yes it seems to be the easy road at first glance, but the true freedom comes from being able to take control of your life and make it into whatever you want! It all comes down to getting out of the comfort zone....do something different, do somthing you don't dare to do. When you get the hang of it, it becomes as good a rush as sky diving. Just do it!

Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life – This is a very important one I believe because we have to be responsible for our actions and we have to show people that we are responsible not only for ourselves but also for our business. 2. Live Your Life On Purpose - Motivation, Motivation, Motivation. Everyone needs to have a purpose and if you have a purpose you are driven. 3. Be Willing to Pay the Price - This goes back to the saying put a little elbow grease into it. You have to put into your business to get out of your business. 4. Stay Focused – Every day make a list of what you need to do, how you can make your business even better and what you need to do to get there. Then focus on completing that list. 5. Become An Expert in Your Field You become an expert and pretty soon you will have people beating down your door. 6. When a person is trying so hard to break out of their JOB and become financially free, the amount of make money information is a bit daunting. Also, I tend to think that many entrepreneurial type have a least a touch of ADD (I think there are some studies to support this), therefore making the skill of focus even more important and challenging. I totally agree on everything in your article! The problem, as I see it, is the "good enough syndrom". When you become stuck in this syndrom you don't push yourself anymore, hence you don't evolve. And yes it seems to be the easy road at first glance, but the true freedom comes from being able to take control of your life and make it into whatever you want! It all comes down to getting out of the comfort zone....do something different, do somthing you don't dare to do. When you get the hang of it, it becomes as good a rush as sky diving. Just do it!
