"The Answer" is the best I've read so far (and I've read a lot of this kinda stuff) If you though The Secret was a bit lightweight, try this...particularly helpful to us entrepreneurs too! |

Any book by Ayn Rand is a good read...though not exactly "light" reading. Nathaniel Branden's books, too, are good reads...

Hi Deepak; I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but honestly, what have these books done to your life? your income, your personal relationships etc? My point is simply ACTION. all the great reads, all the shiny tools, all the classes, all the conferences, what do they amount to without ACTION? Well got that off my chest, and I feel better. ( by the way, I'm not too great when it comes to action, but I know that's where it's at.) success, I mean |

An author that I don't often see mentioned in these forums, and yet has been hugely influential, is Jane Roberts. Have a look at the early pages of some of the Hicks' (Esther & Jerry) books and you'll find Jerry's acknowledgment that, after having success with "Think and Grow Rich" (Napoleon Hill) in the 1960s, they moved on to the work of Jane Roberts in the 70s. After Roberts died in the mid 80s, they mourned the loss, but were fortunate in that Esther soon began to produce her own material. This is not a copy of Roberts' work, but is consistent with the teachings it contains. Subsequently a television producer (Rhonda Byrnes) asked the Hicks "to allow her to build a television show around our work. She brought her film crew onboard one of our Well-Being Adventure Cruises (shipboard seminars) and filmed the heart of her production around our workshop there on the ship. However, because of a series of fortuitous events, the movie evolved into a DVD format before its Australian network-television airing, and as a result, the project became an enormous success. Millions of people around the world have viewed it." As readers will be aware, the DVD and TV show was called "The Secret". The quote is from the preface to Hicks' book, "The Astonishing Power of Emotions". The best introduction to the work of Jane Roberts is "The Seth Material". The content is beautifully written and I found it to be immensely stimulating. I normally read fairly quickly but, although it is not a big book - about 300 pages - it took me several weeks to finish as I found it so thought provoking. The two books which immediately followed - "Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul" and "The Nature of Personal Reality" contain the heart of this philosophy. Later books expand on this. Roberts' work looks at concepts not explored by the Hicks material (such as past lives and time) and, because of this, many may find the work of Esther and Jerry easier to understand and apply. However, serious explorers of this field will enjoy and benefit from what Roberts has to offer. Most of the published works of Jane Roberts seem to be available through Amazon. Ivan |

I have read many of the books mentioned already or they are on my "to read" list. Someone listed Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. That was a pivotal book for me. It is brilliant and so is her other book, The Fountainhead Other books I've read that have not been mentioned yet are: The Power is Within You by Louise Hay (really helped me a lot, since I had a lot of forgiving to do) Creating Money - The Keys to Abundance by Sanaya Roman & Duane Packer Book I reading right now: A New Earth by Ekhart Tolle - all I can say is I'm going to have to read this one more than once. |

My favourites are... "The DNA of Success" - Jack M. Zufelt "The Power of Positive Thinking" - Norman Vincent Peale "Unlimited Power" - Anthony Robbins "How to Win & Influence People" - Dale Carnegie Currently reading Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth", it's one of "Oprah's book club" books. Seems like a very controversial book but just start reading. Feel it's quite deep in terms of content. Anyways, there's a magazine called SUCCESS. Lots of great reads in there, it's a monthly magazine and there's a dual disc inside each issue. The discs are seriously great value! Everyone should start reading it. |

My favorite self help books are, "Git Off The Porch! and embrace your destiny"... By Willie Crawford, it's an easy read and can be done in one day. It made me feel very inspired! Also, "You Can Heal Your Life" by Louise L. Hay. I just finished "Attractor Factor" by Joe Vitale (it's really good and has places in the book to write down what he's telling you to). It's a great book when you need to get clear about something. Another favorite is "The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity" by Catherine Ponder, as well as, "You were Born Rich" by Bob Proctor. Enjoy! |

Lots of great books here, but nobody mentioned "Power vs. Force, The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior" by David R. Hawkins (I found out about it by reading Wayne Dyer's books.) Other excellent reads: "Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" and "Power, Freedom and Grace" both by Deepak Chopra "The Richest Man Who Ever Lived: King Solomon's Secrets to Success, Wealth, and Happiness" by Steven K. Scott Those are just a couple in 'this' book-aholics collection that I didn't see mentioned already! ![]() Cheers! Joanne |

I would have to say the 2 Anthony Robbins books, Unlimited Power Awaken the Giant Within They are a great foundation. I have read many other books but I have found that many contemporary personal development books often have a ring of Robbins familiarity to them. |

Wishcraft, by Barbara Sher, was the book (more than 25 years ago now) that got me off my duff and on the road to what has, so far, been a pretty exciting and interesting life. I still use her backward-planning flow chart whenever I have a big project to complete. She wrote another book a couple years ago called Refuse to Choose which is a big help to people like me with 'too many interests'. I've read most of the other books mentioned and gone through various kinds of training (Psych-K is the latest one-- and I've found it quite helpful) -- but the only ones that matter in the long run are the ones that help me in the slow process of learning to recognize and pay attention to my own 'voice'. |

I like this stuff - but it's repetitious and long on exercises, short on practical ways to make money. If you don't do personal development to make more money that's cool... I do that too. Few authors really cover spiritual develoment/psychological maturity and the nuts and bolts of getting money well. Maybe Stuart Wilde - but he's still rooted in metaphysical thinking so it's all "how to think and be", not "here's how to get people to buy stuff". From a non-money perspective my most influential books are probably those of B.K.S. Iyengar - "Light on Yoga" and "Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" For making money it's all direct marketing and salesmanship lit for me. Dale Carnegie's stuff is great for selling as is a lot of the positive thinking stuff. In the end it's a lot easier to feel positive if you feel good in your body. Get enough rest, exercise, reduce toxic habits and eat a balanced diet heavy on vegetables and light on sugar and you'll find it a lot easier to be effective and happy. |

I've never gotten into "Think and Grow Rich". I know I need to read it, it's sitting on my hard drive as an ebook (real simple and easy to read), but after "The Secret" and "The Science of Getting Rich", I'm just not in the mood for it right now. I've put off reading it for like 6 months now. |

I have lost count of the amount of books that I have read on this subject over the years, but here are a few of my favourites anyway; Anthony Robbins- awaken the giant within James Ray -harmonic wealth Jack Canfield-the success principles I also have to mention the book that I am currently reading, I notice a few people have mentioned that before but really it is worth looking at if you haven't already; Joe Vitale - the attractor factor. I have to say it is much better than I expected. I know for a fact that as soon as I post this, there will be numerous books which I have forgotten to mention here, that will spring into my mind. However, if I quoted every book that I had read on the subject, I'd be here all day. I will mention one more though; Joseph Murphy-the power of your subconscious mind A real classic that one. Oh, and of course think and Grow Rich...actually, I'd better stop now! |

A lot of my favourites are already up there, but one classic I love (even the title is a form of self-help!) is called "Procrastinate Later" by Dr Michael Bernard. I'm also having fun trying to get the 4 hour workweek applied in my rigidly rule bound government job. Anything Dan Millman (esp Way of the Peaceful Warrior), Pat Mesiti (Wake up & dream), Rich Dad series (I love Rich Woman), Jack Canfield (Success Principles), Mark Victor Hansen (One Minute Millionaire is a brilliant read) are all good. Probably the least well known ones that I love are: "Don't Bitch, Just Get Rich" by Toney Fitzgerald, and "When they Zig, You Zag" by Siimon Reynolds. Yes, both of them have unconventional first names, not typos. Best wishes with your search and journey, Crystal |

I've been reading self help books for 25 years. The one that has stood the test of time for me is Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". There is so much of value in here. If you are looking for a principled way of living that will lead to a life of real success read it. Andrew |

Another vote for Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracy. The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker (not really a "self-help" book, but a lot of the business advice in the book can be applied to other areas of life as well. GREAT stuff on managing your time.) Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferazzi (Again, not a self-help book, but amazing information on building relationships in business and life in general. I've heard a few people refer to it as a 21st century version of How To Win Friends and Influence People). |
