Default What Is Holding You Back From Taking Action?

We all know that taking action is required if we want to be successful. We cannot just learn, learn, learn. We need to mix our learning with actions.

But often there are some things that hold us back from taking action. Things such as fear and laziness. I want to collect a list of the things that hold people back from taking action so I can take action myself and I can teach others to take action.

Please leave comments in the sections below so we can really find out why people don't take action.

What stops me from taking action is confusion (so many ways to make money online I don't know wich one to choose and stick with), lack of motivation, and lack of passion in what I want to do like write articles.

what makes most marketers take action is what is called paralysis by analsyis.

They lose focus concentrating many things at a time .

So, to get rid of this just focus on one task and proceed with other after you finalize your first task .

I think that fear is a big one. For me though it is fear of success. What if I do get everything I want? .... Then what? Its a weird thing...

information overload is huge for me too. I get so much good info that I don't know where to start. Instead of making a plan and focusing on one thing, I want to do everything all at once. Then I get nothing done.

You hit the nail right on the head there Mike Ive spent 2 monnths now trying to learn everything I can and trying to figure out what I want to do, but have not taken any action. Infomation overload seems to be my main problem.I think your right and need to focus on one thing at a time and go from there.

Hi all and thanks for starting this most valuable thread.

I am having the same problem as you all. There is so much information that it is difficult to know where to start. It gets very confusing to figure out what's the right way or the best way to make money on line.

So many of these complete package programs promise us that we will be making stacks of money if we buy them. The best I think is not to buy them because disappointment will follow and then wanting to go and look at another packaged program that will promise you the same thing and so on...

The ideal situation would be to hire a private coach that's capable of showing me the way at least to get me going and making money up to some point where I am doing things right and then continuing on my own.

I am in a financial situation that certainly can't afford me to hire a private coach as they don't go cheap, none the less they will never come for free.

Sometimes, we procrastinate, though there are a number of things that pile up in our desk we still don't have the urge to work on them. I think we should sacrifice a bit of our time to work, i had read a book that says, sacrifice for 2 hours by working and enjoy the rest of the hours or else you will have the reciprocal.

There is so much information out there, with conflicting opinions, that I feel like my head is spinning. I don't know who or what to believe. Also, I've tried so many things that have been taught to me, but I've failed. Sometimes, it's hard to know the difference between giving up on a project because you're not getting the results that you had hoped for, if you're not trying hard enough or if it's just not a moneymaker and to move on.
I consider myself to be a creative person, and I taught gifted and talented kids for 25 years.
I've seen the 'downside' of being creative in myself and many of those kids over the years.
Creative people, i.e., entrepreneurs, get sooooo many creative ideas that they find it hard to focus on just one. They also tend to get very excited when they get a new idea, but then they get a better idea--well you can see where I'm going with that. They are also easily bored by mundane tasks which don't allow them to use their creative potential. Problem is, those tasks have to be completed. They tend to hate details that are repetitive, again, those things have to be done.
For me, the solution is outsourcing. I'll do what I'm best at and let other people do what they're good at.
I think we all fear change-- and success, as great as it is, is still change. If you can break through that barrier, you're well on your way.

At times there can be an information overload particularly in IM! I think it is so pivotal to have your goals written down and reviewed consistently

Good question Ryanmacca

I'm Neil and I'm a procrastinator.

There are heaps of good points in the replies to your question. Here are some of my thoughts:

I think there are a whole lot of reasons why we don't act here are a few I know

1 goal or purpose is not defined well - so we don't know what to do
2 goal or purpose is too big - don't know where to start
3 goal or purpose is not ours - no buy in or commitment

1 I guess is obvious. If you don't know what you're doing there's no chance you going to act to achieve it.

2. Well, it all comes down to chunking things down - I am alway reminded of the old question: How do you eat an elephant? Piece by piece.

Breaking things down into steps can make what is daunting, possible, and if you believe you can do it that's half the battle won.

Chunking also means you can have mini-goals so you can see and measure your progress (and reward yourself when you hit milestones - always a great thing - or penalise yourself when you don't).

This can deal with some of the problems of confusion.

3 Goals that aren't yours - well not much to do about this. If they are imposed on you because of your work best bet is to get them done - otherwise they fester.

There is a great book called Eat That Frog - and one of the key suggestions, hence that title is to do the work you like least first, then everything is easy.

Fear is a killer too - especially and some might think oddly - Fear of success (totally agree with Tom Sindoni). For some reason we are worried about being successful - maybe because we don't think we deserve it?

The other one is Fear of failure - how you will look to others when you fall down, how people will shake their heads and say, "Well I told you so".

Fear that the job is too big - ie making a mountain out of a molehill - I have put off jobs because I think they will be big and unweildy and 7 times out of 10 they are much simpler than I thought and I am left wondering why I didn't do them and let them eat away at me.

Finally (and I see it runs through a lot of replies) and as cabmgmnt puts in it a far more succinct post: focus.

Internet Marketing is a huge area - I have jumped from traffic trading to blogging and even now I have to conciously push down an idea someone put in my head two days ago.

Even when it gets down to specific activities - Focus 100% - if something else comes up - put it a piece of paper and leave it till you finish what you're doing. Like the say a dog that chases two rabbits catches neither.

(At this point make sure you task is in line with your goals - no point climbing up a ladder and finding it was against the wrong wall!)

Okay - I'm going to stop now. If you got this far, thanks for reading. I hope it made some sense. (Will probably edit and blog this later : ))

cheers

Neil
