Lightbulb Story of my first decent success online, $160 to $13,000

This happened way back in 2007, I was already making money from other sources online.. but was definitely under financial stress as I was starting from scratch, living by myself. Then I was not a part of any IM forums, all I learnt were from IM courses.. and I already a drive for marketing & business.

But you can't make much happen without some funds, Luckily I had about 200 bucks to spare when this opportunity came up..

In short :

I purchased a website for $160 which was selling a downloadable product for $47, I made approximately $2500/mo in profits for two months using PPC and I sold the site for $5600 within 80 days of action.

Here's how I did it and how you can too..

I purchased a website for $160 on Sitepoint marketplace (now flippa)

This was my second such purchase, my first purchase was of $250 which was a total waste..but I somehow knew I had to invest in this thing.

This is what I learned from my $250 loss and I started looking to purchase a new website under $200 but with a different strategy all together..

1. It had to be in a market that is HUGE - huge search volume - huge demand - huge buzz. So even if I got 0.5% of the total search volume I would still make decent money

2. Long term trend - The business should be viable for at least 5 years even if you intend to sell it in a few months. It shouldn't be serving a temporary trend.

3. Competition - There should be damn good competition, I din't care if I had to compete with 30 odd sites. The greater the competition, it served me as proof that there is money to be made - it's not just search and buzz anymore.

4. PPC competition - I wanted to see atleast 5-7 people competing for the same keyword. More proofs!!

5. It should be a product centric automated business, of which I only take care of traffic to make money - no headaches of service, complicated support or any of that.

Basically I just wanted to be part of a huge impulsive market and have an autpilot bsuiness.

The website I purchased..

Well for under $200 don't expect to buy anything great, you're probably making a mistake buying it - it is only going to serve you as a learning experience. but I was lucky - since I had already learnt a lesson from my first purchase..

The website I purcashed second time around was not just a piece of template, it had actually made about 5-6 sales using PPC with a pathetic website..

Instantly I knew I could do an infinitely better job at selling the product..

This is what I did with the website within the next 7 days:
  • Instantly hired the best minisite graphics guy I could find and paid $450(borrowed from friend) to redesign the website with AWESOME graphics
  • Listed all competitor websites, their salesletter, pitch and strategies
  • Revamped by salesletter with loads of content and pesuassion (I din't use opt-in).. I was only focusing on making impulsive sales as the product demanded.
  • Conducted full blow keyword research and setup PPC campaigns

Once everything came together I re-upd the site and from the next day onwards it instantly started making $50-70 profits/day. With further tweaking it started making a decent $100-150/day.

In two months of running business I decided to cash out which I did on the same marketplace for $5600 making me a total of approximately $13,000 + (including income from the business) IN PROFITS. revenues were much higher..

That's how my first successful project happened, it's not a huge success but it made me believe that I could make it online and since then I have been part of many successful and unsuccessful projects and have sold many online businesses - and the experience is serving me well in my next big venture in life.

This will come as a surprise to many of you, I've moved into much larger transactions and hopefully will play a critical role in closing my first major eight-figure acquisition deal by Q1 2013.

It all started from a few hundred dollars in 2006 - and I still sometimes fall flat on my face as I've never been a grt manager of money but I'm working at it.

Takeaways - Yes you can make a living online, don't give up, stretch yourself as much as possible, work as hard as possible, treat everyday as it's your last, continue learning, believe in yourself and save up when you actually start making serious money.

Also make 'failure' a part of your life..

Even the most successful people on the planet face defeats and failures in their day to day life, you'll face defeat, resistance, loses and many other struggles in life(unlike what Gurus say) - so make failures a part of your life coz you will fail many many times in life to produce a few grand successes.

Enjoy the journey no matter how rough it gets because the journey is the reward.

If you ask me weather particularly you can make it or not - invariably the answer is - 'If you have high degree of persistence, perseverance and desire to succeed you can make it'. It all comes down to 'How bad you want it?"

I'm a drop out, have always been an average student in school and I don't think I've exceptionally high IQ.. but have always been a student of Business from a very early age. That's all I have as my credentials.

What was your first success - what made you believe 'Online' is the way to go..

A great post indeed.
I like especially the last part about perseverance and not giving up.

I think nothing in life is ever easy, if you're ready to step out of our comfort zone, there's always the opportunity to making it big but if we choose to stay in our comfort zone, there's no chance at all.

Great story Brute.

I also live by he philosophy "enjoy the journey no matter how rough it gets because the journey is the reward." When you take that approach it helps you to persevere past obstacles that stop many people in their tracks.

Thanks for the sharing. Indeed never give up is so important.

Apart from never give up, stay focus and being consistent is a great tool to success, not just internet business, but also anywhere else.

Stay consistent and FOCUS!
This is the best system to succeed in internet marketing.

Very interesting story although I am seeing it from a slightly different angle
Personally I have not got the kind of mind that could do quite that kind of thing
although that's mainly a matter of succeeding at what one loves doing.

However I do observe your mindset in this which is key to success in general
and so naturally what I find of most interest in this .
Actually I do not believe in failure as it's a dualistic concept
rather I see it as lessons on the journey
or not yet succeeded so it leaves a path open.
So many seem to forget about enjoying the journey
and I do often wonder how many people in pursuing their dreams
actually wanted the long road to that to be immersed in IM.

You seem to have a remarkable CALM CONFIDENCE
that is the key attitude to acquiring whatever one is aiming for.
I've learnt to leave the definition 'want' out as it is affirmative of staying in a state of.
Also sometimes persisting in action could for some be more like
'right action' a buddhist term, one of the 8 pillars they tie in well with this
another is right thinking
Buddhism also says that 'thought comes before all manifestation'
so what you think about you attract
I'm not a Buddhist as such I just respect wisdom from whatever source.

My experience is that mindset gets astounding results
so it is important to attaining anything in life.
I like 'CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE'
the woman who singlehanded sailed the globe started each day with that.

So whilst I am refining mastering the actual money side of things
(which I seem to have just acquired the last missing parts for)

I have had the exact central platform, that I wished for, come to me out of the blue
(it did not even exist when I first wished for it a few weeks back)
that will tie all the disparate parts of my ethical biz together perfectly.

It was in someways directly tied in with being persistant in being here a year
despite the newbie blues that means most do not last 6 mnths
I KNEW I was here for a reason yet it was not in the obvious
as IM is not my natural 'niche'
more a 'I wonder why I have landed here'
That's how I experience my life path always somewhere for another reason
than i first thought, it always happens, yet still it surprises me.
It's like higher mind knows where to put me then shows me glimpses till I figure it out.
Then the lamp is lit.
I count that as a kind of success
a wonder filled life whatever ones budget.
It is in many ways quite magical
A simple example
this is an IM site so that is what one expects to find here
To understand this best think of something you particularly love
completely unrelated to IM.

I love Llamas, just was immediately smitten by their beautiful faces
and despite them living 1,000 of miles away,
I felt I always had known them, I even wrote a book with them in the story.
I happened to mention my love of them a short while back
on an unrelated WSO thread (no one's done one on Llamas that I know of )
so it was just becuase the vendor happens to live in Peru.

The other night I got a PM, whilst I was writing one to help a friend
so the karmic wheel was turning

'saw you love Llamas
we used to bred them
go here for our free book on them
a fellow Llama lover'

Another part of this was that is I find things I write come true
writing down what you wish to be successful in can help
check out ideas on how to on 77's thread on Wording your affirmations.

77 I am aware you are well read on mindset books and it shows in this story.
I would love to know which ones you had read at that point, and which ones first.
Did you start reading them at the same time as you knew you had an interest in Biz
or did that come later, what is your story with that please.
It seems a missed out bit of your story,
perhaps that's for another thread I will enjoy to read.

Oh and I don't believe your average IQ unless you compensate by a combination of being methodical and inspired. There are different kinds of intelligence and you do not seem to be lacking, yet are humble enough to inspire others that they can achieve what you have.

Loving making an abundant living whilst helping make a difference in our wonderful world
Considering your customer as friend or family engenders trust and loyalty
If you feel the same and are into such as Green Lifestyles, Alternative Health and Self Dev
or exploration of more client centred business models it would be lovely to connect

I'm glad to inspire you guys with my success story.

Flipping websites can make you a ton of money indeed - but you should know what you're doing.

There are literally millions of real estate investor, everyone you know have some money invested in real estate but that doesn't make each one a professional.

My advice - do small projects, don't loose money.. once you've the confidence don't second guess yourself just go Bigg..

I don't see it as a payoff, as it was only the beginning.

But you need to work rili hard, unlike what most gurus preach.. remember thousands people just like you have access to the same tools, info and resources.. you should really amalgamate various strategies together to create your own sweet spot.

Don't run with one Clickbank course blindly.. those courses are sold to thousands of people literally making the strategies saturated overnight.

But you can always use the strategies, mindset and tools to find your own niches and opportunities to make money.

I was JUST asking this question in another thread. You nailed what I was wondering. What is the process, step by step, to GET and profit from a site.

You told a true story, and I thank you because it was a learning moment for me.

Now, I don't think I will need to bump my head on the wall this time around...LOL!

Thank again!
