Well I just had a huge slap in the face about money. As much as we think we know we can still slip into some old bad habits. I have to go back and read some of the materials that made me so responsible in terms of money management because recently I had a totally avoidable "financial challenge."

It pays to remain a student and to keep learning and applying good principles.

Ultimately, we all realize we need money to survive in todays world, I guess the real question boils down to how much we think we need?

In my personal situation, I live a pretty simple and conservative lifestyle trying to keep my debt low and to provide for my family the best I can. That being said, my thoughts about money have shifted over the years and I now am working toward my goal of replacing my current earned income with enough from residual/passive sources so I can obtain true financial freedom and stop trading time for dollars. My ultimate aim is to spend the majority of my time with my growing family and helping others.

I honestly believe if we can get to a point of true financial freedom it will allow us to step back from all the day to day distractions and really pursue our dreams!

Just my 2 cents!

Joe

I agree, many of us do just look at money as a way to pay the bills and for some thats out of necessity. My hope is that for those fortunate to have additional funds once their monthly commitments are met spend some concentrated thought on not just needlessly blowing the remainder but look to do something positive with their gift of excess.

honestbizpro, i guess that depends on how that person values money. if winning a jackpot makes a person loses his (her) mind, spending crazy, not being thoughtful enough about the future, he probably will end up back to where he begins or even worse. On the other hand, if he remembers what he has experienced (lack of money, the need of money in emergency...), i guess winning a jackpot probably won't change a person much. The worst thing a person can do is put the money in a bank account (i don't think that's a bad idea, although some may think he can earn more if he invests; but what if he doesn't know how to invest...)

I think money gives you more choices in life.. but maybe not the choice of being happy. That comes from something deeper.

Basically, money = relief for me. Relief from the stress associated with paying bills, being in debt, not having enough money for Christmas, not having enough money to go on trips, etc. etc.

So, getting rid of that stress will go a long way in making me a lot happier overall, and I'll have peace of mind knowing that my son has everything he needs and can grow up living a comfortable lifestyle.

I'm not interested in living in a mansion and owning 5 luxury sports cars. No matter what my income level becomes, I will continue to live modestly. The biggest thing I'll splurge on is traveling, which for me makes a HUGE impact on my quality of life.

I think money is not an end but a means to an end. A VERY essential means. I hope i made sense.

I belive that money is only a mean to maintain your life needs , and can`t be an aim by any mean , as if you put "money" as an aim or a happiness tool ,if you did so then you will lose it`s real value. In this forum i heared a good say which is "If you are not happy with few money so you will not be happy with much of it"actually i liked it to much, for me it means if you couldn`t use few money to change your life and be happy so you will never be happy with much it.

Money is very important because it may even give a person a sense of "control" and "power." However, it shouldn't be the ONLY thing that matters. As they say, "Money is the root of all evil."

Money is a material tool. It can't buy happiness, but it can buy things and it can buy time to do the things you like to do. So, if you're working for money, you're working for it's potential benefits, not the money itself. I hope to be living in Barcelona with the money I make on the internet. The free lifestyle - paid for with my laptop and niche markets. It can be done. I'm gonna do it. So, to me money = freedom.

Money is disposable... Everyone must know the value of money and manage their money properly, but at thesame time if you sweat it too much you won't have a lot of money coming in! If you live your life as if the money doesn't matter too much and just go on with your business and set your mind that money comes easily for you, you will have a lot more of it!

I hope this makes sense...

Hi,
Just a line from an old comedy film, said by the lovable rogue:

Nice and simple philosophy demonstrating that 'many a true word is said in jest'

This entire thread should be "required reading" for young adults.

I thnk we could be giving young people much better tools to assist them mentally rather than have them learn from the "School of Hard Knocks."

I like T Harv Eker's Affirmations from his "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" seminar, when it comes to attitudes about money.I release all subconscious barriers to financial and personal success
I am an excellent money manager
I always pay myself first
I put money into my financial freedom fund every day
My money works hard for me and makes me more and more money
I earn enough passive income to pay for my desired lifestyle
I am financially free. I work because I choose to, not because I have to
My part-time business is managing and investing my money and creating streams of passive income
My inner world creates my outer world
Everything in my life is a choice. I choose to be wealthy
I create my life. I create the exact amount of my financial success
I play the money game to win . . . my intention is to create wealth and abundance
I admire and model rich and successful people
I believe money is important, money is freedom, and makes life more enjoyable
I am a confident and powerful magnet for financial abundance and prosperity
Every day in every way, I am becoming wealthier, happier and freer
It is fun and easy to make a lot of money
I deserve prosperity
I enthusiastically create and step into my financial freedom
I am destined to have an abundance of love and prosperity in my life
I create abundance doing what I love
I deserve to be wealthy because I add value to other peoples lives
I am a generous giver and an excellent receiver . . . each are equally important
I am a truly grateful for the money I have now
Exciting, prosperous opportunities always come my way
I live in unlimited luscious abundance . . .. More and more effortlessly flows to me with ease and grace
My highest desires are manifesting now
My capacity to earn, hold, and grow money increases with each and every day
I allow and receive wealth and abundance into every area of my life . . .easily and effortlessly
I am worthy and deserving of prosperity, abundance, and love.
Money and prosperity flow into my life from many different sources
I earn enough passive income to enjoy a prosperous and loving lifestyle
I expect and receive miracles

One thing is for sure. There are no shortcuts. Behind any decent wealth is proper planning and diligent work.

Its true now that we can not live without money. Once there was a time when people live without money then they also have certain necessities without which they could not live. Of course they meet their needs with the barter system but at that time the people were also not as greedy as now they are. It seems like everyone wants to become rich overnight but practically it is not possible. We should focus on our strength and on our skills and what we can do within our means if we want to live a contended life.

Just have to get one thing off my chest.

Money is not the root of all evil. That is supposed to be a quote from the Bible - sadly it is a mis-quote.

As correctly pointed out by a poster, EnlightenedEntrepreneurs, the quote is actually:

"The love of money is the root of all sorts of injurious things." 1 Timothy 6v10

When you think of all the people who have put money before family, friends, relationships and ended up going through a great deal of pain because of it, you can understand why that is said.

I like the idea of money being a useful tool and something that we all need to live and get by.

Ruth

I have a friend that's worth over 900 million. During the summer, he called and asked me to go car shopping with him. I thought oh yea, Adam's going to get a ride in something really hot. We went to 3 dealerships, and you know what he purchased.....wait for it..............................a Ford Escape. Nothing wrong with that, but I should have known better. There's nothing flashy about him. No exotic cars, big homes, bling bling, etc. I knew him a few years before I realized he was really wealthy. The guys always doing things for people; paying off bills, covering house payments, etc.

I really admire this guy. He can have anything he wants, but is more concerned about people putting food on the table than fulfilling wealthy desires. A modern day version of Robin Hood. Most people around here have no idea how wealthy he is; but some are starting to catch on with all the good he does for folks.

That is very interesting my friend. I can certainly relate to the helping people part...it's just good karma.

I would be interested to know did he earn or inherit and in what field of business if you can share.

I wonder if the Ford was a Made in America symbolic purchase because the depreciation and re-sale value is kinda terrirble for that model vs import.

Ahh Good Karma - I've noticed you're quite the helpful fellow. I enjoy helping people as well......almost to a fault. I've run a home repair business for many years and was offered a show on national TV a few years ago. I declined it since I would have had to move far away a take a large cut in income.

He helped start the business many years ago with his parents and brother. From what I understand, his father was the real workhorse of the company and drove it to massive success. His father recently passed and he now owns 51% of the company. He's thinking of moving to Seattle to take over the whole operation. Although he is considering hiring someone to run the company. The business is sports related.

As far as the car goes. He had nothing in particular in mind. He just went to car lots to see what peaked his interest.

Wow thanks for that my friend! Very inspiring indeed. It does not even sound like we are talking about money! Especially the $900 Million he is worth!!! ha.

In this age of Corporate bonuses for running a company into the ground this is a very refreshing story. Thanks!

And thanks for the Karma comment..I really do try to make a difference and it's fun.

Nice thread! I think money is important to live a comfortable life; it doesn't necessary mean to live lavishly as you see on TV with a lot of celebrities. Money is also something that if you have enough of it, you can use it to give back to the world and help the people who don't have as much and need it just to maintain a sustainable lifestyle.

There's no doubt the monetary system cannot be the best solution. However it's the one we got. So I think the best plan is conquer it by acquiring trillions through the creation of hundreds to thousands of businesses in my life time and use the money to fund things like the venus project. Check it out if you haven't heard

If the Venus project never comes to light that's okay. If I dont become a triollionaire that is also okay. I am a firm believer in shooting for the moon and at worst landing amongst the stars and having just a few hundred million isn't gonna hurt the life style I want.

Nice cars. Nice Yachts. Nice homes.

and hey if you believe in Buddhism... everything is perfect as it is because the universe is in balance That includes the suffering, its what we learn the most from. (even the little ones making your nike's in indonesia)

To me, money represents freedom. I enjoy travel, so being able to up and go whenever I desire - wherever I want is valuable to me.

It also represents abundance - or rather, an abundance of money represents abundance...I enjoy luxury. Fine clothes, good wine, silk sheets, inspiring artwork etc. Money is a means (and only one) to attain that.

Yet, it also represents bondage. I think focusing on 'making money' isn't the most ideal mind state. People bind themselves to work they dislike so they can 'make money'...some will do horrific things to 'make money. Yet ultimately, for most, money is not the desired thing.

In fact, it is difficult to say money is really a thing at all nowadays. I rarely have actual paper notes or coins in my wallet. Most of my spending is online, or through a card. In fact, for Christmas I was given a few 'prezzie cards' - which are like discardable visas...I spend the money on them then throw them away! But I never see any of this 'money'.

It is for me, almost entirely little bits of information somewhere out there that I never touch - and yet throw around daily. An elusive nothing which has value. I see no reason to spend my time, focus and energy on obtaining nothing.

Money is just an essential 'weapon' to protect yourself against the nasty 'beasts' in the jungle of life, beasts like bills, the mortgage, and the gutters.

There's nothing wrong in loving money!

Without my favourite and only sig , my youth may just wither away unnoticed! And it makes me very sad.

Money can also be our hardest working employee to make us more of it.

Money is just energy. Your beliefs about money will determine your experience with money.
You will always manifest the amount of money that you are you are comfortable with.

If you thinks that you are comfortable with millions of dollars , you will have millions of dollars.

Check out Harv Eker and listen to what he has to say about money.

Unless you are a dreamer alone. Staying in bed all day may be hazardous to your money making ventures.

wow, reckon everyone has about nailed it! I hark back too a post about educating kids with money, that should be a given. If we asked people who achieved sudden wealth such as an inheritance, lottery etc a high ish minority might say it did'nt make them particularly happy and instead of solving all their problems it gave them extra ones.

So the message here is that money, by itself, rather than make your life could break your life! It seems we still need a purpose for our life, when you reach the stratospheric levels some have it seems that they spend their time wondering how to give it away!

Regards

For me money is more an abstract "concept", something which floats around in cyberspace.

I am creating this "money" using virtual methods, like services, web sites, selling digital information, SEO etc... None of this is "real" in a sense that you could touch it, it's all more of a virtual concept.

Ideas and information is exchanged and somehow "materializes" as a number on my account, or i transfer a part of this to someone else and get a service for it in exchange, like my rent, articles etc..etc..

Now with Internet Marketing, it's like the result of some complex methods, similar to a computer-game where you have stats and variables, and you can play with those stats but need to make sure that whatever you do at the end yields a positive outcome.

Invest, Re-Invest, Spend....

It's interesting when you look at some of those strategy games where you start with ZERO money....and you can learn to manage and risk/invest money and...all of a sudden after a week of playing you made a million or more out of nothing.

The interesting thing is that the same principles can apply in real life, with the difference that in real life *most people* are more careful and wouldnt risk what you otherwise would do in a game - but the system is in fact often exactly the same. You can make millions in a game by applying a strategy - and you can do the same in real life.

Money is just a method of exchange...it is what that exchange provides in value to you that matters...lifestyle, security, freedom, opportunities, etc.

I am a pretty decent problem solver so if "More Money means More Problems" I am standing in that line.
