Lightbulb Success starts with an unshakable commitment...

Where does action start?

I recently took a long weekend away from work and home to visit my family and while I was away I caught up with my brother for a beer and and a yarn and we got to talking about commitment.

We were both at various stages of completing some pretty major projects in our lives and were discussing how hard it was sometimes to turn motivation into something tangible. In particular we discussed the fact that motivation is always strongest at the beginning of something and then once you move into action it seems to fade away.

Our conclusion was that this is why commitment and discipline are essential to success. Commitment turns motivation into action and discipline makes sure that the initial push that comes from great motivation isn't dissipated by an unsteady course.

Commitment also creates focus and energy and empowers you to stay away from influences that would try to distract you from doing what it is that you really want or wanted to do. It is one of the most powerful principles in our lives. But sometimes we don't take it seriously - in fact many people now even openly disparage it, saying it takes away from independence and freedom. I think it does just the opposite. It makes you free by taking away the competing influences in your life so that you can focus without being tempted to deviate. It gives you freedom to achieve your goals and ambitions to the fullest.

In my opinion there is nothing more needed in order to be successful in anything.

Commitment should be in all respect - professional as well personal as they are interlinked.

Yes, commitment and motivation are 2 of the big keys to success, in all areas of life. But, have you ever been in the situation where you have commitment and motivation to do something, but notice that after a relatively short period of time, it all fizzles out? FOr example, a decision and commitment to lose 20 pounds, and it goes well for a couple weeks and then just falls apart. So often we set our steps or daily goals as way too big...then when we don't meet them, we get discouraged and get into self judgement etc. I have found 'microactions' work beautifully Little action items that you do everyday to move you toward th egoal, and then prizing yourself after you do them. For example, lets say you want to declutter your house....if you feel you must do the whole thing, it feels like a huge heavy task. SO you set a microaction of 15 minutes a day....it is easy, do-able, and most often you will find that after several days of completely your microaction and prizing yourself, you will often spend much more than the 'required' 15 minutes, and it will be fun and easy and light! THis concept has worked so well for me in so many areas.

My thoughts on the topic of success are that the toughest thing about success is that you've got to keep on being successful, and that success is the reward for your many accomplishments.

Have a great day

Staying committed and motivated to the results we want to achieve is so essential to becoming successful. Unfortunately at times we take for granted our ability to do things effortlessly, so we slack off and loose purpose and clarity and before long we're off track. I enjoy watching athletes who remain disciplined even when their sport is second nature to them. They still practice for hours and aim to be better than they were the last time, that is commitment.

Commitment is a corporate/legal word often used against you in negotiations to make you keep doing something against your will.
I'd replace commitment with inspiration.
Commitment is self-inflicted feeling of obligation to do something that often leads to unconscious resistance to do that thing.

Inspiration can carry you through fire and under water to your dream.

"The definition of the word commit is to devote oneself unreservedly... this means holding absolutely nothing back;giving 100 percent of everything you've got to achieving wealth. It means being willing to to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes. This is the warrior's way"

When we set commitments and make it our priorities in life, the chances of us completing the important tasks will be much higher. When we made commitments and stick to it, we will awaken the potential lying deep in us to achieve the results that we have always wanted. Great point!

Agree with everyone's view on commitment. It really does set the ball rolling to achieving what you set out to achieve.

Yes..I agree. If you put on a good amount of commitment in what you are doing, then you will be expecting a great success in the end. I think, people need to focus on commitment when working on to something, so that there will be better results in the end.

I agree aswell.

Commitment is crucial since Your Reason for
doing something must be bigger than any
challenge which can come at your way.

Because if the reason for doing something is
just the money, there will be hurdles along
the way which are bigger then the money you want.

So, the reason must be very strong in order for your
commitment to last.

Commitment is required for success, without it how would you hope to accomplish anything? I find commitment easy but being able to deal with distractions a lot harder.

SFranklin - it's really interesting what you said about distractions because this is exactly what I was talking about over the holidays that sparked my interest in the subject. I always found commitment easy - I'd jump into things all guns a blazing, then then get knocked around over time by distractions. That's where discipline comes in and it's much harder than commitment in my opinion!

My commitment from my work has been tested these days. I have been lazy for work, and I have been procrastinating my tasks. I don't know why, sometimes things like this for me happen. A need to lie low is sometimes good for me so that I could figure out what to do. My enthusiasm sometimes pause for a moment but I am able to get up little by little.

I know exactly what you mean. I just have to get away from it all sometimes. In fact, two of my favourite things to do in life is travel and drive (combining the two is a bonus!) Even an hour of the highway with nothing but me and the radio does wonders for clearing up some space to move forward just a little. The key is to keep moving. Plateaus are an inevitable part of any journey, but we can't afford to ause on our plateaus for too long. Hope you work things out soon. JMS
