Do you ever get TIRED OF FAILING?

You are probably already familiar with the story of the frog who was boiled to death. The frog was in a water-filled pot on a stove. The heat was turned up one degree at a time. Eventually, the frog boiled to death. Oftentimes, in our IM careers, we can IDENTIFY with that frog.

What killed the frog? Two words: COMFORT ZONE.

The frog got used to the temperature of the water and there was enough time for him to adjust as the water got hotter and hotter. Until it was too late...
All of us have comfort zones. Our zones give us reassurance. They give us a safe place to stay instead of facing our fears and anxieties outside of the zone. The problem is.... the longer we stay in our comfort zone, the more it shrinks.
Eventually, our comfort zone becomes a PRISON. Every day we spend inside that prison we are FAILING. Failing to build our skill sets. Failing to build courage. Failing to seize opportunities. Even if you are making money in your comfort zone, all it takes is one change for you to become broke. Don't believe me? Ask guys who used to make bank with Windows Media player's auto switch function. Ask guys who used to make bank running yahoo chat bots before the system applied captchas. Ask guys who built thin EMD sites. The list is endless.

That frog could have jumped out of the pot ANYTIME. But it didn't. It figured the FEAR of landing somewhere WORSE is worth more than any problems staying in the pot. The frog's FEAR killed him. Will YOU let your fear of failure, disappointment, and hardship KILL your dreams?

If you want to KEEP your comfort zone, you should PUSH its boundaries. Take risks. Build your skills. Broaden your expertise. Don't stay in the same place spinning your wheels.

To broaden your comfort zone and boost your income potential, do this PRACTICAL TEST

Look at your browser history for the past few days.

Do you see a pattern?

Do you do a lot of exploration and checking out information and skills-building sites? Or do you browse within a tight collection of sites? If you answered the FORMER, you are doing well. If you answered the LATTER, you need to start branching out because your comfort zone is quite tight.

You don't have to make money now to WIN. As long as you are GROWING and LEARNING, you are building the foundations for victory.

The solution is to get TIRED OF FAILING. Get so sick of it that you make a daily list to broaden your knowledge, conduct experiments, and build your resources. Keep trying. Keep experimenting. Keep tweaking and fine tuning your solutions. Sure, its frustrating. Sure, it can be long and drawn out. But you only need to look at the ALTERNATIVE and you'll quickly realize that there is only ONE WAY to get to the top-persistence and constant effort.

Great post! Even though IMers make mistake after mistake, they haven't really failed until they've given up.

If you fail the first time, learn from it, you fail the second time, you fail better than the first time, you fail the third time, you fail better again.

As long as you learn something each time you fall down you will eventually succeed, don't make the same mistake twice!

I disagree with it being failing. The "Comfort Zone" is an issue of being successful enough. It's easy for the guy working at McDonald's to want to grow and be better. Because his current life is uncomfortable. He may or may not be a failure but he knows he isn't successful.

The problem starts to happen when people reach a level of success. The problem is that most of us have talents and skills beyond what we use but we take the easy path. Because we are successful enough.

So it is not failure that holds us back. It is success. The key in life is to combine success with drive. Where you are always driven to the next level.

People like Gates, Jobs, Branson, and Buffet were all successful from a young age. They became legends by knowing that success is not good enough.

Changing your life for the better is easy when you are a failure. But how many of us could change our life for the better if we were working 10hr/wk and making $150k/yr? And the success doesn't even need to be that great.

Think about the general or district manager of a fast food place. They make good money, the hours are not great but not horrid but if they grew up poor they likely make more money than their parents or grandparents ever did. They can't take a risk because they are successful.

How about the salesman who is making $70/k per year. Yeah he is at the dealership all the time but half the time he surfs the net so he is really only "working" 30 or less hours per week. He is successful so why should he change jobs even if the potential is so much more?

This happens a lot in life. Success not failure is the greatest enemy of reaching our potential.

You nailed it on the head. The truth is, it is much easier to learn from failure. Plus, there's more incentive. Let's face it-most people are reactive instead of proactive. Most of us act only once our back is against the wall. Failure pushes us against the wall. No wonder most people only learn when its crunch time...

Such a great post my friend. Most of us want success on a conscious level, but subconsciously, we are running away from it, because success is more often than not higher stress and more responsibility.

This is true. He is content on making that income so he doesn't work any harder. If he quit surfing the net and truly got out of his comfort zone and worked, he could double or tripple his earnings.

Plus, if things change in his industry, he will find it harder to cope because he just 'coasted' within his comfort zone. The key is TO BROADEN our comfort zones so our businesses/our livelihoods/our self-image is FUTURE-PROOFED.

The key is not to run away from it but OWN IT. Admit that things aren't panning out and realize that you're IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE. This is the most powerful realization anyone can have.

I think if everything I did went right I might be a millionaire, or pretty damn close to it lol. I call my fails split tests, and those that don't work out I scrap, while those that yield favorable results I tweak for profit. This is all a mindset.

Those methods that don't yield favorable results need to be tossed aside for those that do. I had to do a ton of "split testing" to find out what worked. Can't be tired of something that's not in your vocabulary.

What do you think gets in the way of you fully succeeding? How can you work on your comfort zone to produce the results you feel you deserve?

Failure is just another lesson in life. The only time you really fail when you stop trying. Giving up is total failure. As long as you can figure out where you went wrong you can change it and keep moving forward.

you can never truly fail as long as you are learning from your experience, then it is not a failure but a learning experience.

I do get tired of that feeling of failure, but I know that roadblocks and setbacks do serve a useful purpose...as long as I get back up each time I get knocked down. If you do that, you haven't failed...yet.

Outstanding post! This is just what I needed to hear. FEAR and COMFORT ZONE are killers in this industry. Those were my 2 weaknesses in the past. Not anymore. I'm changing that old way of thinking this year. Taking more risks and getting out of the comfort zone. 2013 is going to my year!

At first I did not like the word failing in the above question, because I make a decent income plus I have products that sell online successfully. But then I thought about this question in even greater depth, for an area of my life that has actually meant a lot to me. In my life its the dream of 6 pack abs, its more than getting a six pack, its the work that goes into getting it, its the fact that as a kid I was underweight, got abs for a short period of time when I started weight lifting in the gym I was 18. No one really took me seriously, as I'm a 5ft woman.

The one area of my life where it has been hard to get to where I want to be is bodybuilding.

The one area where I constantly find myself staying in my comfort zone is when I get to a decent body fat percentage, its like I go all out and forget all the work I put into it. I would be most motivated when my clothes would get to a point that they don't fit. [ie when I knew I wasn't successful]

I am a woman, now 34. I haven't been lifting every year since I was 18, but I have off and on took it on. Back then I didn't know about websites like bodybuilding.com or online ebooks etc.. and managed to get from 100 pounds to 110 pounds body fat percentage was 12%. My weight gain happened when I was 24 since I thought I could eat anything...

I am currently at 25% body fat but I look lean and I desire to get to 12% keeping the same weight of 125 and to do it all naturally eating whole foods and good exercise. Clearly, I'm not where I want to be yet.
I don't care what other people think I should look like, just like how much money someone else makes to consider themselves successful.

Its not about what other people think success is, its what you think success is supposed to be for you. Success without fulfillment is Failure!!!

Failure after knowing you tried your best and are willing to go at it again with all your heart is Success! Success is heart. It is drive. Success is taking something hard and making it enjoyable. I was supposed to burn off 500 cals via exercise yesterday, I hate slow cardio, so I walked to the beach from my apartment, it was a 6 mile walk. It was fun! But then I woke up this morning and my weight went up by 3 pounds, it freaked me out, until I went online and found its just water retention, we learn something new everyday, even when its slow, difficult things can be enjoyable.

Success is being excited about doing the little things it takes every day to get to difficult things you want to achieve.

The funny thing is that the more you fail and learn, the closer you are to your goals if you don't give up. That's the whole key, not giving up. Sometimes, the Universe has another timetable for us, and we have to go through the process of failing in order to learn and grow enough to reach the maturity and the self confidence to finally have a breakthrough.

See... That's the key. FAIL and learn. We often just focus on the fail part instead of the learning part. Failure is a much better teacher than success.
