Default Do you keep track of your money?

Do you always wonder where your money has gone? It's funny how often we don't seem to have a clue when we try to recall what we've done or bought with our money.

I used to be in that situation but I've since learnt my lesson. I learnt that in order to better control my money instead of letting it control me, I need to keep track of my money. Otherwise, the vicious cycle will just keep going on and on and on.

Here's what I do to keep track of my money:

1. Whenever I receive an income without an official payment voucher such as gifts, picking up a note from the floor, etc, I’ll keep a record of it on my mobile phone with the date included.

2. I’ll ask for a receipt for every purchase I make during the day, big and small, and keep it in my wallet. If a receipt is not available, I’ll jot it down using my mobile phone.

3. At the end of the week, I’ll file all the receipts in a proper file. For transaction records I kept in my mobile phone, I’ll write them down on a piece of paper and file it together with the receipts. Remember to include the dates as well.

4. At the end of the month, I’ll total up all my income – salary, dividends, interest income, etc – and my spending – food, transport, health, entertainment, etc – and then enter the data into my Personal Monthly Budget statement using Google Personal Finance Tools.

5. Rarely do I lend money to someone. But if I do, I’ll write down the amount of money lent and key it into my Budget statement as ‘Money Lent’ highlighted in red under the ‘Miscellaneous’ column as soon as I get the chance.

If the money is returned during the same month I lent it out, I’ll simply delete the earlier record from my Budget.

But if it’s returned in a different month, then I’ll record it down in that month’s Budget statement as ‘Money Paid Back’ under the ‘Income’ column.

So, that's how I keep track of my money. Do you have your own way of tracking your money? Please share it with us.

Cheers~

Mark

That's a good way to keep track of your money. The way I keep track of where my money goes is everyday I write down what I bought and for how much in a little notepad. If I have a receipt I will write down the exact amount, but if I don't I will round off to the nearest dollar. So far its been working good for me, I'm seeing how much money I waste on fast food and unnecessary items.

I have used Quickbooks for several businesses in the past so it works nicely. If you want to track different web sites, you simply make a 'class' for each domain. As income comes in just add it to that account with the appropriate class.

This allows you to run reports periodically to see where you are AND send the whole file to your accountant at the end of the year.

The reports are amazing to get a quick look at where you are on a daily or weekly basis.

Always amazing to see where money flies out when you begin tracking all expenses. This is a great way to budget and cut expenses.

I learned my lesson also and start tracking my money a few months ago. I usually do it everyday. I keep all the receipts and remember everything I spend for the day If i dont have any receipt then at night I have to record it. I use excel in tracking everything. I have it all in different columns: The daily expenses, the income, the bills payment and other things that I do related to money. So far its all working fine for me that way. At least I can see where everything is coming and going.

I write down in my balance sheet less than I actually deposited, and live by it. Over the years I have saved up a decent amount of money doing this. When I first started doing it, it was just with $5 ea pay period, now I do it with nearly $100 every pay period, but like i said, I have been doing this for over ten years. Of course I have had raises, and I adapted to a frugal way of living, and taken all the necessary steps. I prepay my electric bill usually a few hundred at a time, and keep things turned off as much as possible to see how long I can stretch the credit on my account, I prepay internet, and rent too just because I can now. I live in a city, so I use public transportation and buy an annual pass. It's my way of securing things for down the road, because I have been put out of a good paying job that I was at for several years due to a company bankruptcy related to the auto industry. When I was with that company, I was putting back like $200 per week. Thank God I had money saved during that time. It doesn't matter what method you use, just start saving whatever way you are comfortable with. If your are consistent, an exercise some discipline you will accomplish that.

Markfoo - What kind of phone do you have that you keep track of all that?

My answer:

Anything I use my debit card on, I simply check my online account at night.

If I use cash then I keep the receipt in my glove dept then when I get home I file it in a folder under a certain category. These include Food, Bills, Fun, Business, etc. <---I keep all receipts just in case.

At the end of the year, when I file taxes I take out any tax important receipts and then once I am finished I put that file up in the closet and just use a new one for the current year.

I am fairly bad about keeping track of day-to-day spending though.

Keep track of my money?

What money?

I use a debit card as well, and check it often...
Plus, I try to run on an allowance of a certain amount of cash each week...

Back to my second exclamation... What money? LOL

Be Well!

Fortunately, I do not have any credit cards, i just use debit cards and track spending through an accounting system called MYOB - similar to Quick Books. You can also set up MYOB to job cost, in my case i analyse the cost of my web sites individually so I can track income vs purchases. It is not that time consuming but can paint some interesting pictures.
Before spending on anything I do a mental check on "truth" of purchasing. Do I really need this, how will it benefit me etc.

Looking for Internet Marketing Peers to collaborate with.

This is how i make

I spent years dealing with hoarding piles of receipts, then went to mint and started doing everything with credit card/debit cards. Instant expense reports rule!

Hi Woody,

Any mobile phone will do. You can save your expenses record as a 'Draft' under your mobile "Message" service. Just open up a new message, key in the data, and then save it instead of sending it out. When you save, it will automatically move to the 'Draft' section. At least that's the case for my mobile. I save the entire month's expenses in one draft.

By the way, I'm using Nokia N95.

Cheers~

Mark

Hi Eric,

Do you know if you use credit cards responsibly, they can be very powerful wealth building tools? That's because most cc offer either cash rebates or loyalty points which you can use to redeem free gifts and air miles! That'll help you to save a lot of money. I have accumulated a few hundred dollars worth of fuel vouchers.

Of course, the key is to be responsible and not abuse cc. If you'd like to know how to make sure you'll have the money to pay your cc bills on time monthly, you can check out my article, A Practical System To Managing Your Money.

It is a system of how I manage my money with multiple bank accounts. Look under 3. Credit Card Payment Account to see how I make sure I pay my bill on time every month.

Cheers~

Hi 1 Marketing,

I absolutely agree with you. That's why I'd advise people to do their own data entry - such as on your mobile - when cc are not accepted and also when you don't get a receipt for your purchase.

I definitely keep track of my money right now. That's why I always use a card rather than cash most of the time. This way, I can login to my online bank account and see where my personal expenses are.

The way I keep track of my spending and income is to carry a note pad with me everywhere I go. I leave it in the car when I'm traveling and post notes to it as I spend. Then at the end of the month, I transfer it to a small homemade ledger. Works for me.

What I see, most of the people posting comments on this thread are not so carefull about keeping track of the money. But if you have proper system of accounts (not necessarily a professional one), you will be very clear in have an picture in your mind that how much have you gone to achieve some targets.

Should you do more efforts or to maintain at this level... A proper track of money always helps.

Hi Mike,

A note pad is good too. But I just find that it's a bit troublesome so I use my mobile phone instead since I'm already always carrying it. But as long as that works for you, it's great!

I must say I am quite impressed by how some of you track your earnings and spendings ... Even though I agree that "you don't become a millionaire, you grow into one" I have been much less careful about my money since I started making a decent living.

Now I simply check my balance on every 10th and 25th in the month - I check all my bank accounts and various online accounts - and as long as the sum is steadily growing, I don't give it much thought.

I totally agree, tracking money makes such a difference. I have yet to meet a wealthy person that did not have a handle on where their money was going and know how they got it.

I have used Simply Accounting for about 18 months now and it's great to track business and personnal. Having the ablility to look at where you are at with income and expenses can make a very big difference on your bottom line.

I have always felt that if you don't want to keep track of your money then pay a bookkeeper to do it and just check what they are doing and then you will know where you are at.

Much easier to make business decissions this way.
