When You Know It's Time To Walk Away

I know 'overwhelm' gets talked about ad nauseum in this forum, especially for the folks just starting out, but I think overwhelm gets exacerbated when we obsess over our daily shiny objects.

What I am really saying here is - it's important to know when to walk away.

And not for good - this should become a daily exercise for those people who spend their days trying to figure out how to get organized, which WSO they want to try and finish, so on and so forth.

This is what I do to prevent overwhelm - because even I tend to get distracted and off path. We all do.

  • I dedicated a maximum of two hours daily to screw off. Check Facebook, read emails, watch the grass grow, etc. This isn't hard and fast either. It's give or take and can be chopped up throughout the day.
  • I must complete a business related task, any task, before 10 a.m. I don't remember when I set this goal, but boy does it make me feel good about myself going into the afternoon.
  • If I find myself losing attention to something, I walk away from it. I may or may not pick the task up again that day.
  • I try and leave room for spontaneity somewhere during the week. You know, the call you get from the friend who only ever calls you at the last minute to go play golf - plan for him. Build it into your week - it isn't that hard and you won't beat yourself up for going when you are done.
  • Go to bed at a reasonable hour. Step away from the computer completely and DO NOT return to it. I know this is a hard one but hard isn't impossible.
They say it takes thirty days to form a habit and I believe that to be true. The first thirty days will feel like hell if you aren't used to being disciplined but my experience tells me that this gets easier and easier.

This, and I am pretty lazy. You should see my front lawn right now. Yikes.

Try to add some of the above to your routine and if you are feeling overwhelmed especially, just know when to step away from the computer and regroup.

    Great post Brendon...

I also wanted to add, if you purchase a product that has multiple ways to do something (.e. a lot of training videos or modules and different techniques) go through everything once and read the entire pdf.

Then pick ONE technique that you know you would enjoy doing, and master it. Do not move on to the next task until you truly understand and mastered the first.

Then move on to the next... and rinse and repeat.

If you go through all the techniques with the thoughts of learning them, then you will get overwhelmed.

So just initially go through them to familiarize yourself with what needs to be done. Pick the easiest of the techniques and master it.

    Then go to the next.

If the overwhelming feeling starts to come on, walk away for a moment. Return only when the feeling has subsided.

As Brendon said, if you do all of the above then you should be fine.

  • Thanks a lot for sharing.
As for me, when i felt overwhelmed, I will go to battlenet and play for a while, or watch tv or climb mounting. life is not all about making money. Grow rich with peace of mind is more important.

    Good points. Thanks.

I'll add this, too... to help prevent overwhelm be sure to put EVERYTHING on your calendar with the time you think it will take to complete it. You will very quickly fill up your day and see that you have little time to screw off if you want to reach real goals by specific dates. This is awesome for creating intense focus and developing the ability to say no to everything that doesn't lead you to your goal. Decide how much of every day you will devote to: Learning, Relationships, Fitness / Health, Business Growth, and if you are spiritually minded... then include Spiritual Growth time.

Here's one more... stop spending money on shiney objects here in the forum and put your money toward hiring / buying into a good coaching program from someone who has done what you want to do. Their help will get you to market and profits faster than anything else.

I can certainly relate to the friend who comes out of nowhere and wants to disturb my delicate productivity plan.

Let's just say I have gotten used to saying "no".... a lot.

It would be nice though to schedule some spontaneity into my life. I just find it difficult at times to be spontaneous while juggling school and multiple businesses. It seems that there is ALWAYS something to do and never enough time to do it.

What I have found that helps though is to make a daily checklist for each area of your life (fitness, school, businesses).

Write down the things you would like to do daily and weekly (workout, eat right, spend 30 minutes studying each subject, write a blog, create a video, etc.). After you do them, check them off.

At the end of the week you will be surprised at how much you actually accomplished

Yes, time management is important. Allocate time to for others stuff that is important to you (exercise, meditation, family time etc)
