I've heard some marketers put down positive thinking as "fluff", divorced from action. Seems to me that the positive thinking comes before the action. Without a positive self-image or some hope of success, you won't take any action. Others put down positive thinking by saying it's like rose-colored glasses that ignore reality. Seems to me that many people are knee-jerk negative in a way that ignores reality. It takes discipline to think positive, even when negative people try to pull you down. Like holding the steering wheel of a car to keep it from drifting off the road. I like The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. Fluff or substance? How has positive thinking helped you? What could help you more? |

It's mainly about believing in yourself and your abilities, as well as training the mind to be in a state that makes you most effective. There is some truth to the idea that people just try to be positive, yet fail to hone in on what will truly make them effective. Like anything else, it takes study and practice to make positive thinking work best for each individual.

While positive thinking is essential, there are many people who think that if they think positively enough, good things will come automatically. It requires an equal balance of both action and positive thinking to make things happen.

I believe positive thinking is needed to help us achieve success. If you do not have positive beliefs that things will work out, then we will not try our hardest to make it happen. Positive belief will help draw out your innermost potential and make things happen. Cheers, Vincent | |

That's why I say use the word 'constructive' instead of 'positive'. Constructive thought is free of putting judgement on whether things are good or bad. It keeps you focused on doing whatever is the best thing to build your life and move forward. It also doesn't keep you from accepting realities you might think of as 'negative'. Embrace 'constructive' thought. Divert yourself from 'destructive' thought. These terms keep you on track much better in my experience. |

If people think positive, it'll help change your attitude to bring success and happiness. But thinking positive isn't enough. You've to put thoughts into action... |

I think that positive thinking is often misunderstood. I have spoken to many people (especially my family!) who constantly put down positive thinking. Their "argument" is that positive thinking is just denial of the situation and that positive thinking won't change anything. In a way, they are right. In and of itself, positive thinking won't change the situation and in some cases, may be a denial of a bad situation. But positive thinking can be a very powerful tool if used correctly. Most people on the thread made the connection that positive thinking must be linked with action. This is important. The first step is to evaluate the situation (not the problem--that would be negative thinking!) If the situation is bad, accept that and look for the solution. If you lost your job and you can't feed your kids and your house is about to be foreclosed on, accept that this is not the ideal situation! Positive thinking does not mean denying reality. What positive thinking does is preserve hope and open doors to solutions. Positive thinking prevents us from losing hope and giving up. Once you have assessed the situation, find the solution. Meditate, clear your mind. The solution will present itself. Now, armed with your idea and your belief, take action! Positive thinking is a very powerful tool when used correctly! “You've done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstoppable determination.” Ralph Marston |

I think, if you believe in the things you are doing, that will do it at the end.
