Default Perfectionism a help or a hinderence

Do you put off starting something becuse you don't want to do it unless it's going to be perfect? But you already know it's never going to be perect anyway so you get into a trap of circular thinking.

Any of you. gals /guys, in here. also have to battle through this very self-defeating trait and have therefore gone past it to the road of financial success?

No product ever became successful because it was perfect. Products become successful due to good marketing (and of course quality of the product, graphics, copy, and stuff like that).

Perfectionism is a hindrance and until you learn to stop striving for perfection in your marketing, you're probably not going to get anywhere in your business.

Hi

Everybody wants their product or service to be pefect but waiting to reach that stage is definitely a hindrance.

I learnt the hard way and not set up my project and get it out there and let it evolve naturally, adding more and more great content and improving the product or service.

In the meantime, I am not getting discouraged working on my 'masterpiece' because I am getting customers which in turn means that I am committed to improving and completing the project.

My advice to anybody who is working on one or more projects and have not released them because they are not 100% happy with it is just get it out there.

Once it is in the public arena and you know that people are looking and buying your product, it is a huge incentive to providing the best service you possibly can.

I was recently digging my heels with one of my own products, looking to make it better, perfect, super..

And then JT pointed me to this post on Robert Plank's blog.. now that timing WAS perfect I launched soon after... w00t!

Oh... here's the link to that post:

It Doesn’t Have to Look Good, Just Be Good

Although it isn't directly about making it "perfect".. it does touch on something that I think could benefit may....It helped me a lot...

I have a perfectionist streak in me that I have to keep tight reins on.

I've often seen products/websites or emails from undisputed leaders of this and other industries that superficially, to my perfectionist mind, look appalling. I have to remind myself that these folk are making very good money from their 'appalling' sites and the lesson is not to produce appalling products but to run your business efficiently and effectively.

Do what needs to be done to a standard that will optimise your profits. If you sit on a project waiting for it to be 'right' - it never will be and therefore won't make you any money.

i think perfectionism is like a help AND a hindrance. it's a help because it requires you to check if you are doing the right thing or not. thus, it is like a hindrance because there will be a possibility that you will try to see the errors in every thing, in every activity you will do.

Double-edged sword.

Perfectionism leads to paralysis.

If it is a choice between making sure everything is just perfect or getting it out there...GET IT OUT THERE! You can always make corrections.

Took me forever to learn this. I think we are conditioned to believe it has to be perfect. And that is plain not true.

Its been a hindrance for me most of the time. Delaying my projects and causing a lot of procrastination. However, it does lead to a certain degree of obsession that ensures that my projects - at least those that I obsess about, come out a cut above the rest. A good degree of quality, I might say. I guess though that I've not learned how to harness my perfectionist impulses in a way that might prevent any delays in what I set out to achieve.

I'm sure I speak for a bunch of other perfectionists out there who I belive may echo the same sentiments.

The first version of my products is very rarely the best one. But I never tire to make next versions better.

I think that otherwise I would never make any money. You just need to release what you consider is good, even if it is a far cry from being perfect.

Works for me and I continue to have happy clients. As long as they see your commitment to make your products better, they are likely to stick to you.

Just my two cents.

Take it from the view of a writer: there's no such thing as a perfect first draft. And in my work, there's ALWAYS stuff I'll add, even after the "final copy" is written.

People aren't perfect. Can we ever create something that is?

It depends on your mindset. If you're a person who is focusing always on the future and the results, perfectionism will kill you because you'll be too scared to take action.

But let's say you're doing some writing right now. If perfectionism means being totally present with what you're writing and being a perfectionist and dedicating all your energy to making what's in front of you the best, then it can be a great energizer.

Perfectionism and procrastination are linked together, get rid of one and you'll get rid of the other.

Perfection is how you define it. If you strive to achieve that which you think is near-impossible, simply because you want to achieve it, well, don't do it for the results, do it for the process. There's a reason why artists are notoriously poor =)
