Setting Micro Goals: Setting Yourself Up For Success

The secret is to break it down into micro goals.
A challenging growth goal may feel like climbing a mountain. It's like losing weight, it's hard to lose 20lbs, but it's easy to take a walk every day for a week and cut out desert. Pretty soon... you've lost 2lbs.
Business works the same way. Big goals can be overwhelming. What you need is base camps, or check points that make those big goals less overwhelming.
Small steps are easier to achieve and they give us a sense of accomplishment. Everybody needs to feel like a winner.
On every project set small attainable goals to build energy and momentum. Here are 3 steps you can take to maximise the effect of micro goals.
- Break down a project into tasks with deadlines and outcomes so that the accomplishable tasks are clear and put them in writing.
- Celebrate each win, even the small ones. Be aware of the progress that you are making
- As the energy and momentum build, set more challenging goals. Capture the confidence and yourself and others to do just a little bit more.
I have seen the power of these techniques again and again. So let me encourage you to take one project and break it down into micro goals. You'll be amazed by the results.
In my business I have a very strict regime where each task and micro task is timed with an alarm. For example, I will set myself 25 minutes to write a compelling blog post. You will be amazed how much more productive you are when you are "against the clock".
As soon as the buzzer goes I am onto the next task.
It is important to be realistic with your timings, and also include a bit of contingency at the end of the day to tidy up any incomplete work, and also factor in leisure breaks throughout the day.
Through using this strategy, and method of working, I have been able to dramatically reduce my time working and spend more time with my family - which was my main focus when starting a home based business!
