Now on my blog, Command Your Time, you can see me rehash this point over and over. And to one extent it is somewhat contradictory because small goals, or posts, are what going to land me into eventual success. On the other hand, however, it's a fair point to make. Here is why: You've shot for your dreams ever since you were a toddler. Why not follow through? "I'm going to be the President," you can hear some pre-schoolers rehearse. The problem is that you didn't stop to think if it was possible at a later age. Yes, I know what you are thinking: I'm not thinking in perspective. But what if you did shoot for the stars? Would you still be in your 9-5? Now are you trying to convince yourself right now telling yourself that your cubicle job is what you always wanted? I'm sure it wasn't. Now go find those dreams. And catch them. |

For some people goals can be self defeating. You set them and then you notice the distance between where they are and where you are and it sets you up for lack thinking, disappointment and resentment as time goes by. It's hard to get there if you are always noticing you are not there yet. It takes forward thinking to get there. It's not this way for everyone but this idea is at the root of alot of failure. Where as dreams, well they are golden nuggets of hope that you hold in your heart. They feel good, they warm you when you need a hug, they give you something to keep hoping for, leaning towards, reaching for. Hoping is good, there is no lackful thinking while in hope. This if forward thinking. There is something in the quality of a dream that feels like its a part of yourself. Dreams feel like you can achieve them. Where as a goal can be something that you set out there, separate from yourself. If you set goals make sure you are whole heartedly lined up with them, believe in them. |

About Self Defeating goals.. I think this is because of our Ignorance on goal setting. I think that if people were taught to set goals, we would all become a LOT more succesful. The Problem with setting SelfDefeating goals, is that, we want too MUCH, too SOON. We all know that success doesnt come overnight. And thts why we beat ourselves up when we dont get what we want. To stop this, we should make "sub-goals". We can't just say "I want to Run today". We have to set small goals in the beginning. How about.. "im going to learn to give a Step today" or "im going to jogg, so get used to the speed Today". Theres a lower probability that well fail when we try Specific and Immediate goals, and when we actually reach each small goal, momentum is built, and we are eager and its easier to get the next small target done. Thats one of the keys to success. One step at a Time. But most importantly. TAKE a step at a time. If the Road ahead has a thousand steps to our finish line, its better to be 999 steps away, than still a thousand ![]() Cheers People!

Speaking of dreams I would be quite happy to teach anyone how to Lucid dream I know that the info is out there but sometimes it helps to have a one on one. Just pm me. Imagine giving a victory speech in front of millions of viewers and it was all just a simulation in your head. Just like life the possibility's are largely infinite. Yes Maureen Dreams do feel warm and wonderful. Sometimes like life they are rough but you must take the bad with good ehh? |

When I ask about their dreams though I get a very different response. And I think a lot of the difference is down to one word you used in the quote I pulled from your post - FEEL - people "feel" their dreams. Feelings are far more powerful than thoughts and when someone can "feel" their goal they're pretty much at the point where that goal has become a dream. The best way I've found to help get clients to the stage where they can feel their goal is by drilling down to discover what their ultimate benefit is from achieving it. Once they can get a clear link between the benefit and the goal they're pretty much set to go out and achieve it. Nigel

"You become what you think, and you attract how you feel" If we choose to be the architect of our own life by following our dreams and fighting to make them come true, we will live a rich, abundant life and success will become a byproduct of our chosen destiny. |

We are taught from a very early age to become practical and to become logical creatures. I agree that there needs to be some mooring in reality to keep up all from becoming starving artists (the world needs ditch diggers too). But for those who dare to live their dreams I say keep up the good work!

Let's not forget that dreams are made up of goals. Dreams just have a bigger 'feel'. The steps to get there are just as important. Agreed that far too many people forget their dreams... Great post. p |

When you've a dream and are working towards it...piecing together the small parts of the larger picture or dream doesn't seem nearly as stressful enough as setting big goals at once and working towards them.... I believe the key is to have a dream, and to make the short term goals and 'sub-goals' as you go...but always keep the dream at the back of your mind...don't obsess about it....stay focussed on your short term goals, achieve them, and then move on to the next small aim....and before you know it...you will be living your dream... just my two cents...cheers |

Labelling a desire as a 'goal' itself can sometimes be the main deterrant to its achievement. The word goal for many makes the object feel distant and unattainable.

when i set a goal i envision the end result more then the path their , that way I am not setting myself up for let downs along the way because often the path changes on the way towards the end result.

Keeping the magic of Dreams alive... Great motto, Great Challenge. Disney does it and so should everyone - often Sharing a common Dream is alot bigger than sharing a common goal. I've heard, and used many times: "It takes a Dream, a Team and a Theme." |
