Default Have you been able to quit your day job?

Hi,

Do any people here do internet marketing full time, i.e., as your primary or only source of income?

Have any of you been able to "quit your day job?" How long did it take?

I'm asking because I see all the hoopla out there (earn $xxx thousand dollars a day working from your home part time! , et al) and I have been a sucker for a few things here and there.

Can any of the full timers or "rich" IM'ers (however you define it) lend any words of wisdom to me and any fellow strugglers here?

If you could give the best tip to help me succeed online, what would it be?

Thanks!

Not yet. Hopefully on the route to soon.

There are many reputed members here selling valuable information to get you started. Personally I enjoy working with CPA offers. They convert rather well. Most offers are free for the users to sign up with and the payout are rather high (depending on the niche chosen).

Default Re: Have you been able to quit your day job?

My story is a bit unorthodox in that I was full time from day one. Not that I was making any money. But I started in 2002 I believe. My wife was working. She had the steady job with good benefits (not great pay).

She was pregnant with twins. That's when I started IM. Long story before that, which I won't get into.

But I was a stay at home dad to TWIN BOYS (and trust me, I had no experience with babies before ours came).

So there I was, learning IM and taking care of twin boys (after my wife's maternity leave ended). I would say my income went to full time level about a year later in 2003.

I don't know what you'd define as full time income, but I think about a year after I started I was making about 4k a month which I consider full time income.

My income continued to grow (past 5 figures a month) and in 2005 I took the entire year off from IM (except to agree to an interview to be part of an ebook called Niche Site Confessions). I took that time to spend even more time with my kids.

After a year off, I got back into it and have grown my income substantially since then. I'd rather not say exactly what I make because it doesn't really matter, but it's tens of thousands per month, and although many many people here do better than that, I'm sure many many people here would love to get to that level.

So, let's just say I had it "tough". I mean learning IM marketing AND taking care of two babies in the day ALONE, while my wife worked full time. Let's just say it built character.

What tips would I offer? Well, this may sound terribly cliche but you're going to have set backs and times when you feel like your spinning your wheels and getting nowhere, and it's those times you're going to feel like giving up. Don't!

Those pivotal moments are what separates the eventual winners from the losers in this business.

The second tip I would give you is pick one strategy that fits your personality AND STICK WITH IT.

If you happen to be the type of person who keeps buying new ebooks and courses, etc., looking for the holy grail, STOP.

It's not that the info being sold isn't often valuable. It's just that it's action that makes money, not ingesting more and more information.

Sure, you need a basic understanding and some knowledge, but there are so many people here on this forum who already possess that basic knowledge and could be dramatically ramping up their earnings applying what they already know rather than wasting more time seeking out further information.

The time to seek further information to take your game to a higher level is when your earnings plateau. It's like working out. You work out and you keep doing what you're doing and you keep making fitness progress. Finally, when you reach a plateau, you have to learn new techniques or exercises to keep developing.

But if just doing what you're still doing increases your strength, muscularity, fitness, then you are wasting your time to already be looking for more information. That time could be applied just working out.

It's the same with your business.

You'd be surprised how much money you can make just picking one money making strategy and sticking with it exclusively for a long time.

Regards,
Dan

I am making money from another business that is very lucrative however I need another stream so I have decided to delv in to Internet Marketing full throttle . After all the research I have done I have found a system that involves automation and centralization, Autoresponders, etc. I am giving the information ebook away for free once my site is up and running.

Oh, that reminds me...you hit on a very important point about my wife loving it.

If you're married, you better have a damn good wife (meaning supportive) and who will support you emotionally through thick and thin. My wife always believed in my abilities when sometimes I didn't believe myself.

So there's another key to success. Find a good woman!

Dan

I quit my day job 33 years ago

IM is a gazillion times easier than bricks and mortar, but you still need to do it.

Most people talk themselves out of starting a business and never get started.

I am a best selling author on Metaphysics, Self Improvement and Mind Power as well as doing IM for 12 years, and I really enjoy helping people based upon my own experience and spend most of my life doing it, but a forum like this is limited.

Happy to answer questions as and when though.

I've started doing IM about 4 months ago and I was about to give up when I red all your wonderful stories! MosaicDan, you are so right, I'm going to stick with what I'm doing and not quit! My dream is to give up my awful job! Thank you all for the inspiration!

Great thread! There a ton of warriors on here that do this full time now. I have made IM my full time career but I am not really at "full time income" yet. My story is actually very similar to Dan's except that I am in the beginning phase. I am married to a wonderful woman who is very supportive and has a descent job. I had to quit my day job because I had an abusive boss who treated all of his employees like crap. I was put in to a position where I could no longer work for him anymore. The part after that was the scary part. Do I look for another full time job or do I focus all of my efforts on the IM business that I started about a year and a half earlier. For the time being, I have to chosen to focus on IM, asking for help from anyone who was willing to give it to me. It is amazing how many people on this forum are willing to help you for free. Right now, my wife and I are paying the bills with her limited income and our life savings, while I try to get this business really rolling. Once you start to focus all of your time and energy on the processes and actually take action, things start rolling pretty fast. Eventually, things that seemed so complex before, become second nature.

I am not sure if my story really helps you because I am not a "rich IMer" yet. I will get there though. You just gotta stay determined, stop spending money trying to learn more and more techniques, and just start taking actions. You will find things that work. Once you do, figure out how to ramp them up. Never give up and don't let the down days kill your spirit.

apc made a good point, a lot of people dream of starting their own business but talk themselves out of it before even giving it a shot. I am looking to quit my day job within the next 2 months to work from home. All in all I've been working with my side company for 6 months primarily online and have finally reached the same salary that i was making from my day job. Just thought i would share this story to let you know that it is possible but i would advise to not fall for the get rich quick schemes. Look for reputable vendors like those on these forums.

As I see it, what's bad about gathering more an more information about IM is that instead of dedicating your time to actually taking action, you learn more and more stuff that may turn useless by the time you would finally decide to take action. Things are changing very fast in the virtual world. For instance SEO of 5 years ago is not SEO of today. Especially if you still maintain a job, you have very limited time, so use it very wisely. Learn what you can apply immediately, and whatever you learn use it right away. Don't wait for Phd in IM before taking action.

Even worse though, again, as I see it, is chasing after promises to get rich overnight without doing anything and stuff like that. This is genrally waste of time and money (sometimes a lot of money). IM means working. You maybe paid for it much more than in a normal job (at least eventually, if you stick to it long enough), but you do have to work, and in the beginning you even have to work hard and a lot.

Wishing you good luck

Best regards,
Vered

Steer clear of most products - they are not solutions.

Marketing principles have not changed for the last 200 years - only the medium changes.

You need a shop front - your website, a product or an affiliate product, and then potential customers. Everything else is just good business practice.

Building a list is absolutely crucial.

PPC is the best way to achieve this, but you must be prepared to make the decision to do it, and commit dollars for the AdWords account - enough to run the campaigns. $500 would do, $1000 would be better.

Other expenses: Hosting account $10 per month, List Manager $20 per month - well I guess that is about it.

My computer company employed 77 people and spent $500K per month on advertising alone, all to make 10 profit. Plus numerous other hassles.

Trust me - anyone reading this could create a six figure IM business, but you have to decide to do it, and stay with it whatever happens.

I have only been a member here for a few days, but there are obviously plenty of great members willing and able to help and advise.

I actually quit my day job 1 year ago this month (my anniversary!) and I am getting there, step by step. At that point I knew I would have to make it work because my job was only giving me grief.

Great advice here. My sales are great this quarter and I have some new things coming down the pike I've been working on too. I will never give up

I had to make it work. My job was intolerable and sucking the life out of me. Not to mention working weekends, holidays, and never seeing my family. I had been planning to quit for 2 years and working on the internet building up my business. So although I wasn't where I wanted to be financially, I am just about there now.

So it is great to hear how everyone else is making it happen. Here's to everyone's success!!

Love to hear it Dean.

I like to see people focused on the possibilities of success and not failure.

Even past failures will never stop me.

Of course there are scams all around us but all we can do is keep our eyes open and our feet planted and put in the work.

I started a thread some time ago called The "Best Job In the World" because I really believe that about Internet Marketing.

I think it is absolutely wonderful how many have quit your job.

With respect to those who have not yet made it, "work" is a horrible thing, being paid just enough for food and relaxation to keep you working for 50 years before being thrown on the scrap heap.

One you know you can make money by yourself, everything changes - for the better.

For those not making as much as you would like yet I say keep going - never, ever give up - you will get there soon and you will enjoy freedom.

I have also been a lone single parent of my now three teenage sons for the last 14 years, and experienced the joy of raising them, being with them and supporting them all at the same time.

Very tough at times, but I would do it again and again because I am doing it for us.

I know many people think they cannot succeed online, but trust me - if you are reading this you can. Fortune favors the brave.

Success is 95% a state of Mind. Achieve that state of Mind and you are Free.

This will be my last month in corporate America! I am very excited, but I was not an overnight success by any means. It has taken me just over 5 years to do it (with A LOT of mess ups along the way). It is funny I saw this thread today since I was just writing my resignation last night. Once I leave corporate America, my sole income will be from a MLM, a website that I own, and a joint venture. Never again 9-5!
The best advice I could give you is to not give up. I know people are tired of hearing that, but honest to God I have seen many people quit right before it 'got good'! Never let go of your dream!

Hey,

Well I think the art of focusing your mind on one thing is a biggie here. Though in order to do that you gotta know where you are going. So deciding what your next steps are in building your business might help you.

One of the questions you can ask yourself which will help you focus:

Is the thing that I am doing bringing me closer to my goal or not?

Next, learn to handle failure or dissapointment. So you keep your focus even when something doesn't work out as you planned or projected to be.

Let me finish here with a thing that is where so many people fall into.

the "if then" mindtrap. examples might be "if i quit my day job then i'm gonna be happy".. "if I make 10000$ per week i'm gonna be free".."if I have a girlfriend i'm gonna feel great"...

Don't fall into that, first it's distracting you. Second if you can't be happy or feeling great now, in your current lifestyle. Don't fool yourself that 100000$ a month is gonna make you happy. Learn to be happy now.

Besides that...

Take massive action

Have fun

have to say this forum is inspiring, i read too much and dont DO enough, im lucky enough to be paid for seo work, but its still a job for me and certainly I am still learning as i go along every day with a view to being free again, i was lucky enough to run a few websites for 8 years and make a good living, and have freedom, unfortunately now i am tied to a desk with a baby on the way, as it was the stability that i needed to bring a child into the world, but hopefully some more action and some more help from great people on here will be heading to where i want to go...

Families belong together and should have the freedom to enjoy life together.

IM is probably unique in making that a reality.

Yes it is unusual - unique in fact - for an IM forum to emphasise the power of the Mind. In fact Mind is 99% of it. As I mentioned before I am a best selling author on these Mind, Metaphysics and Spiritual subjects so I appreciate it more than most.

Most people make IM far too complicated when it really isn't. Just make the decision to make 6 figures per year or whatever you desire, and go for it.

There you go my friend! You sound like you have the right mindset.

If you take the time to put toether a great product launch the right way, you can make more money in a few days than you ever could in a year at a traditional J...... J*B..I don't even like to say that word.

These are all great tips. I am not yet making a full time living online, but I am making some money so I know that it works. I realize that Rome was not build in one day,so I am trying to work hard and focus on building a solid online presence.

I quit my job long before I had another one lined up. It's not a move I'd reccommend for anyone else unless you have a good business plan laid out. I didn't, but soon combined my web design history and degree in English to build a business. Now I write full-time and code and design Wordpress themes on the side.

I've just now stepped into IM. This summer I laid out a few plans to get some things off of the ground.

online is my main source of income.

My 2nd source of income is suing telemarketers because I am on the national do not call list. I've made 28k this year so far with legal actions on telescum and it is much easier then most would think to sue them.... I do not sue the firm who called me but rather the firm who hired them.... they tend to have the assets and such to collect on and are much easier to track down then the shady telemarketer firms who go to great lengths to hide and mask their identity. I have been able to sue for 5k in small claims court just off one phone call ( after the 1st opps call the FTC allows telescum ) and I often wait untill I have recieved and documented 3 or 4 calls before I fire off the pre litigation demand letter. They often seem surprised that they are liable instead of just the telescum they hired to harrass me night and day on the phone and promptly settle up ! With any luck I will make another 12k + this year on telemarketers calling me !

I quit my job June 1st! I just moved 700 miles south in order to further my education. My most success has been with the eBay Partner Network. I have been having some luck selling my plugin which turns eBay auctions into Wordpress posts - auction2post.com - and of course the sites that I've built with it generate income - but it certainly ebbs and flows like anything. It's my hope that these sites I've built along with the plugin will provide a steady stream of income during the next three years.

They only count IF you can prove you got the calls unless you marked down somewhere the date and time they called you. You also have to answer the calls to find out what company's products are being pitched. Pre-recorded sales calls are illegal FYI $500.00 per violation in small claims court , which you can nail them twice on , once for even calling you with it , then for leaving a message or for using an artificial voice if they did that !

Trouble is knowing who to serve and marking down the details that matter about a call, then knowing which stat / code they broke for each violation. Most of the time I never have to step in court they settle out of court to avoid having that judgment !

Thats some interesting information marmo. I will have to research the canadian laws to see if it is permitted to sue as we have a national dnc list too.

To answer the forum question. Haven't quit my job yet but I hope to do so within the year to focus on IM!

It would be good to know how long everybody was in IM before they were able to quit.

I am desperate to quit my job so I can be free to work from home without bosses constantly breathing down my neck. Been doing that for 30 years and I'm tired of it! My problem is not enough time to do what I need to do. I am literally away from home 12 hours a day (8 hrs at work plus 2 hr commuting then over to care for elderly parents for 1 - 2 hrs). Once at home, then my own family needs my attention and boy am I exhausted after that! Weekends are just as hectic, but do have a couple hours of free time on Sundays (now). Anyway, I just wish I could flat-out quit so I can focus on IM, but it's the darn bills that are due now that forces me to drag myself back to where I don't want to go. Need to find a way to at least equal my present salary which isn't a lot. And I'm not looking to get rich, that's not important to me, I just want to be free. Any advice on how to get something going with very limited time is greatly appreciated.

Cindy

Have a great domain for IM niche. PM if interested.

I'm still spinning my wheels a bit after 1 month, but I've also spend over 100 hours reading and learning.

The best piece of info I've picked up, is to test, test, test, and figure out what is working before really throwing money at it.

Where do I begin

What a great thread, and some of the stories are inspiring!

For me, I am one of the lucky ones, I work full time online and have done since April 08, I am pushing for the 6 figure mark this year, but it was a long old road of trials and errors. Self-motivation and tenacity are the key ingredients to my success.

I first started online in 2003, and the reason I turned to the 'net' was simply because I was bankrupt due to taking out rather large loans in helping to finance a family business, I also worked in a fast food joint earning $8 an hour, it was hell!

2005 my life turned around somewhat, I somehow managed to convince a rather large mens retail company here in the UK that I was management material! To this day I have no idea how I got the job lol I kind of bluffed it, or I used the gift of the gab as we say here.

Towards the end of 2006 I decided to invest BIG into my online efforts, I was already earning small amounts of money each month, but I wanted to go one step further. I opened a membership site, and it kind of snowballed from there, I had over 3000 members come through the doors from 2006 - April 2008, this changed my life in a massive way.

I became friends with the #1 rated marketer of 2008, do a search to see who that is we became such good pals, even though we were operating competitive memberships in the same field that we both decided to work together.

I gave away my membership (YIKES) to a fella who I had known for years, was penniless, practically homeless, was dreaming of going back to college etc etc, I gave it ALL to him, and he is doing fantastically well to do this day. I moved on out of there May 2008 and began work on my new home.

These days I primarily help run the membership(s) in the network, but I am also a product creator, and have been for years, also sharing my thoughts and experiences with many.

I think there are many people, who like me turn to net in the hope of finding financial freedom, penniless or stuck in a rut, the advice I give to anyone is self-motivation, tenacity and the willingness to learn but also to stick to a plan, far too many people opportunity hop, costing money and time. Stick with your business plan and see it to the end, that's what I did, and I was a fast food worker and bankrupt.

Cheers,
Bren

Yes - once you know you can make money through your own efforts, for yourself, it is impossible to be employed ever again - absolutely impossible. Just not n me to do it - no way.

The stranglehold of the "human control system" has been broken, along with the chains, and only freedom matters.

I am not a judgemental person, but when I drove my kids too school and back every day, and saw all the "workers" in their uniforms, suits and miserable faces walking to work or catching a bus, sometimes getting soaked in the rain, I wonder to myself how they manage to even get out of bed in he morning to face another day like that.

Most look forward to their two days of release each weekend, but by Sunday afternoon they are already dreading Monday, dreaming about their three weeks of vacation.

And all that for 50 years, only to retire on a small pension, lose interest and die.

No - that is not why we are here.

IM has already freed millions of people - taking the eBay'ers in to account, and it will free millions more - make sure you are one of them.
