Am I in the right place?

Hey guys,

First and foremost, I don't care at all about Internet Marketing, it's absolutely not my thing. I'm more interested in the whole 'self-improvement' side of this forum and the other forums seem to be full of whiners who just want to moan. Let me be clear, this is a post asking for help from those of you with more experience than I.

I'm still fairly young, I'm 20 turning 21 this year and I have a scattered history that can't be anywhere near defined as 'successful'. I've dropped out of University twice, deferred twice (not in that order) and I've only worked casual jobs from the time I was 18, probably totaling a year and a half altogether. So roughly half of the time from when I was 18 was employed.

People I know in my life are all moving forwards and I'm currently stuck. I'm not resolved in thinking it'll be this way forever. I'll be going back to University in July. I'm just looking for some advice on how to prepare myself best to study and to be a more positive and engaging person when that time does come.

Specifically I'm looking for techniques to improve my output. I'm currently looking around my room and it's messy for starters. I have almost no organisation skills. I spend a lot of time on the computer playing video games as my escape from thoughtfulness (I think a lot more than I act) and I can feel my collection of useful knowledge slowly dwindling as my mind is being filled with "watch out for the snakes on level 3" types of information.

Thanks, Max

    Hey Max!

You certain are in a helpful forum. As I am sure many other responses are to come after my own.

Studying, and the best ways to do so vastly differ from person to person. Finding yourself unorganized and overwhelmed with thoughts? Possible ADD attributes that you know of? I myself discovered characteristics in myself similar to OCD and some minor ADD characteristics as well. Drugs were not the direction I chose to assist me.
What I did was learn more about my characteristics and find ways to use them for my benefit. After learning more about this I discovered months later that these characteristics were not noticeable by others. I had control over them.

Off topic,,, As for studying, you have to find a way to become engaged in what you are learning. consider real world scenarios and Act them out.
No matter how different we learn, we ALL learn most when we are entertained and totally engaged.

If you have to read over and over and over to remember something you are normally interested in, then you are trying to learn incorrectly.

Some people spend more brain power trying to read then they are memorizing what they are reading... Reading out loud helps this..
Why? Because you are Thinking, Speaking, AND Hearing the same thing at the same time. Apposed to just Thinking it...

I just ran out of time... I will continue in a later post. Soooo Sorry!

"(I think a lot more than I act)"

That's the underlying problem. Everything else is a symptom of this underlying problem. I have written several articles about finding the courage to act and about making positive lasting change in lifestyle (i.e. controlling negative habits).

Here is a link to my blog: better.MindBodySelf. You will find more than a few relevant articles that effectively address your concerns.

Start writing a daily to-do-list. Every night before you knock out, think about what a productive day would look like and write a to-do-list that will make sure you have a productive day.

So for example, if you wanted to study for 2 hours the next day you would write, "study for 2 hours", on your to-do-list. When you wake-up the next day you would cross it out or put a checkmark next to it once it is accomplished.

Then, you would do the same thing for all the tasks you want to be completed for the next day.

This will help you get organize, build good habits, and develop self-discipline.

This sounds simple, but if you actually do it you will get more done during the day.

Ok I've cleaned my room to an almost insane standard today. Took me about 5 hours (yes it was that messy) but it's done. Tomorrow I'm going to sort through storage to see what I should keep and what can be tossed. I've also got myself a lever arch file in order to store loose bits of paper that I need to retain.

I'm worried about burning out though. I'm an incredibly fit individual and I've always considered myself a kind of sprinter, metaphorically and literally speaking. Where I'll be insanely good at doing something for a single day or a short while and then I'll revert back to old behaviours. As if I work so hard on that first day that it's impossible to one-up it on the next and get consistently better.

As for the to-do list, I have a notice board with thumb tacks where I poke in post-it notes. Quite a lot of it is just general stuff though.

I guess what I'm really looking for is more social value (for girls). I get interest from girls and there are guys who would probably kill to be in my shoes for that alone. But I have no confidence in who I am just now. I live with my parents, I don't fully own my own car (I use my brother's) and I still have a single bed and have never had a girlfriend.

Money is what I think I need and a second job would probably do wonders towards that end. Given I work a maximum of three shifts a week. Do you guys have any resources for writing resumes or tips? That or just money making advice in general?

          Hey man.

All I can say is, start doing small things and they will add up. Even if you do one productive thing a day, you will start to gain momentum.

Some things which have helped me be more productive - Work out, eat healthy, daily meditation, keep your surroundings clean (cluttered environment makes your mind cluttered.) but it looks like you've made a start on that already so that's great.

Have a plan and move forward, you will eventually get to where you want to be. If you're going uni soon that's something to be very excited about. It sounds like you are worrying too much about stuff.

If all else fails, look to Don Draper (Mad Men).
