NOTE: I don't recall where I saw this story anymore, but it really touched my heart. I Hope you enjoy it too.) Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Bel ker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life - - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long." May you always have LOVE to share, HEALTH to spare and FRIENDS that care, and a DOG or Cat to LOVE along the way! ______ Bruce |

That was sweet. Sadly, dogs don't live long enough. Happily, there is another dog, great in his own way, waiting to fill the vacant spot in your life. kay |

Just great. I love animals, got little dogie, but never though of such thing. Amazing how little ones think. To add more about dogs, I remember, I believe Dale Carnegie in his book 'How t owin friends and influence people' wrote: Dogs are the only domestic animal, which doesn't need to work. It earns his living just by showing endless love to his owner. (well I think cats are not only for catching mice anymore too) ![]() M.Bruso |

Death isn't real. It is a transition from one state of Being to the next state of Being and is as natural as breathing. Death should be celebrated - not mourned. To the age of 7 kids know these things intuitively, it is only society and religion that reprogramme's them as they get older. I cannot even begin to imagine going through life with a fear of death - or a fear of anything for that matter. As for "shorter" than human lives. "Time" does not exist and no one can prove it does. Quantum Mechanics conclusively proves that time does not exist - it is another human invention. There is only One Moment - Now - which is all that matters.

That was nice. Oops, thats a bit off topic, but I read it in one of the replies. |

The strategy behind a "job" is to give the "worker" just enough food, shelter, rest and relaxation to enable them to keep doing the same "job" efficiently. A "job" is not security, it is slavery plain and simple, which, right from the first day at school, children are willingly working towards.

| Just adding some of my favourite doggy quotes for your entertainment: The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of His tongue. -Anonymous There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face. -Ben Williams A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he Loves himself.-Josh Billings The average dog is a nicer person than the average person. -Andy Rooney Dogs love their friends & bite their enemies, quite unlike people, Who are incapable of pure love & always have to mix love & hate. -Anonymous Anybody who doesn't know what soap tastes like never Washed a dog.-Franklin P. Jones If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he Will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a Dog and a man.-Mark Twain Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole. -Roger Caras If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog Biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them. -Phil Pastoret These are just soooooooo true! ![]() |

That was a pretty nice story, I wonder how a little kid thought of that on his own, I'm assuming his parents told him that, but don't let that take away from the story itself. As far as the quotes, those were so true. I love short quotes and those just all seemed so true it was enlightening. |

What a wonderful story - and so true! Thank you for posting! Here's another one: Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Author unknown... |

I had to put my two dogs down late last year after having them for more than ten years. Your tale reminded me yet again of the utterly selfless devotion they gave to me and how much I miss their companionship. Thank you for reminding me of just how great they were |
