Default You know you've hit success when ....

A deep and happy satisfied, 'Hmmmmmmmm' emanates from within the soul of Mark, who this evening is deeply relaxed and very happy.

That was just simply delicious, almost better, dare I say it, than a bloody good orgasm!

You know you've hit success when one of your greatest pleasures in life is an old 12' fibreglass rowing boat.

It doesn't take much to enjoy life.

I've just got in the door from rowing up the Helford River at dusk, towards Frenchmans Creek of Daphne de Maurier fame, the novelist who wrote the novel by the same name.

Believe you me, that creek is just as magical as it sounds and reads in the book.

It was just over a mile and a half upstream from where I moor my old boat.

Setting off, with the tide in my favour, I was well prepared, with food, a bar of chocolate, a flask of water, a small bottle of cider, my rolling baccy, my head torch, my radio to play Classic FM and my fishing rod.

There's something about being connected to the earth sitting on nothing prettier than an old rowing boat, listening to classical music and rowing upstream on the tide.

As usual Frenchmans Creek appeared in all it's magical glory as I rounded the headland opposite Calamansack Creek in the wide open pool.

This is a place that has an eerie beauty to it, where the modern age has kind of slipped by the place, silent but for the call of the owls and the curlews across the water, the trees, branches reaching out almost menacingly, hidden ghosts of sailors and smugglers from hundreds of years ago, a dark, brooding, quiet place almost within another world of it's own.

The water like glass, with mullet jumping clear out of the water the further upstream I rowed, my oars dipping silently into the water, the silence only disturbed by the sound of my oars in the rowlocks and the moon peeping out tentatively behind the shrouds of dense ancient oak woodland on each bank to either side of me for company.

It was ok, I was born virtually on the Helford River, so I knew permission from the ghosts of long ago would be automatically granted to me, as I pushed ever onwards, the banks closing in around me with old semi submerged trunks of trees watching my every move. It was absolutely silent, almost deathly so.

Turning my old dinghy to starboard, I gently rowed the length of the creek, back out towards the mouth of the main river, where for over an hour, I just floated there on the tide, the water as still as a mirror - the landscape around me silhouetted, a half moon halfway towards the horizon, I stretched lazily, looking up at the heavens above, rocking gently, the moonlight twinkling upon the calm waters upon which I was floating in complete and perfect contentment.

That is success.

You don't need money, or fame or celebrity status - money couldn't buy that tonight, and when Greensleeves came on the radio, boy it felt like I was in heaven just gently rocking there, smoking a quiet cigarette, perfectly at peace with the world around me, almost unable to believe what I was seeing with my very own eyes.

Reeling in my fishing line shortly afterwards, with the moon to my stern, I turned my back to the direction I was going in, gazing back at a setting pink and orange moon as it slowly dipped towards the horizon, using the moonlight as my guide for the direction I needed to find behind me, on my bow.

As I rowed, the reflection of the moonlight, poured out from the stern of my boat, surrounded otherwise by pitch darkness, my oars making a reassuring clanking noise as I started to sing one of my favourite songs - Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong quietly.

Just absolutely beautiful, stunning, exquisite, words could only fail to do it justice - that was how I've just spent the last 3 hours.

WOW!

One very happy Mark

Wow, what a description .. thought I WAS reading Daphne Du Maurier for a moment
It's an amazing feeling when you reach the point where your mind is totally relaxed and in harmony with the world around you. I haven't been there for quite some time but your post has given me a little nudge to forget about the all consuming effort to make it online for a little while and take some time out.

Wow, you write beautifully. Just reading
that post gave me the warmest feeling and
put such a smile on my face.

I feel the same way when I'm sitting on my
back porch -with trees offering shade towering
above me.

It's quite...the kids are at camp...and I'm looking
forward to going swimming with them this afternoon.

Yeah, that's what success feels like. I'd never
thought about it like that before.

Many thanks for the compliments regarding my description of last night out on the river, very much appreciated guys and gals!

It was so lovely out there, I'm just about to go out the door in a few minutes time to repeat the exercise.

Tonight though, I'm going to row downstream towards the actual mouth of the Helford River, past the Ferryboat Inn and Helford village on the far bank, past Durgan, past Trebah Gardens where I was born and head for the bass breeding grounds, hopefully tonight I'll catch some fish for my supper.

Just about to set off now, drive over there - think of me in about 2 hours time, back in heaven, sipping a lovely warm beer, fishing rod over the side of the boat and listening to chilled out relaxing tunes on Classic FM.

Perfect!

The life of riley as they say, can't be bad!

Description to come later....

The Helford River

Ok, see those houses in the far distance in the photograph below, my boat is about 1 mile from there, upstream - I'll be rowing straight down this stretch of water in the next two hours and will be fishing just to the left of this shot before returning to row back upstream later sometime after midnight....

Wow that pic is surely awesome and gave me a great feeling because i recently went to such place in northern areas of my country and enjoyed the river and felt so much relaxed that money obviously can't do.
It would be good if you can provide us with a larger picture because everything seems like so small but i can still feel the real good thing in it
Thanks for such a great post and letting me know that i had hit success loads of times

Hmmmmmmm just got in the door, after spending 3 hours plus out there, crisscrossing the river, rowing from one side of the river to the other, several times over.

Almost too relaxed now, my body is still swaying in motion to the boat, almost feel giddy from being too chilled out, it's like being rocked to sleep like a baby out there.

Virtually completely forgot where I was for 45 minutes, suddenly coming out my stupor, to realise that yes, it was night, and yes, I was still floating around in the middle of a river lol.

I don't know if I enjoy being THAT chilled out and relaxed, it could be dangerous on a small boat at night. It was like dreaming, in another world.

Not as picturesque as last night on account of the moon scurrying behind a thick blanket of cloud, but still, very very nice, rather beautiful in fact.

Roll on tomorrow night!

Wow! That's excellent writing you have there, Mark, and very inspiring too. It's nice to know the various perspectives people have over success and all your stories, guys, make me sigh with a smile. Well, success for me is being able to go out and have fun with my kids without having to worry or being guilty about leaving work, being able to tuck the kids in bed at night with the thought that I have them all covered up until college or when they're sick, being able to buy little toys for me without feeling guilty about the $$$, and of course enjoying my lil career as a writer and editor.

Thanks Travis, that is indeed very kind of you to compliment me so, much appreciate that.

Well, it's 3:45am and without a beautiful womanly presense to keep me company and warm, I'm going out now to do the next best thing, as any normal guy lol would do at 3:45am - I'm going fishing!

I know I'm supposed to be catching up, writing all of this sales copy, copywriting but stuff it for an hour, the full moon is up, dawn is only an hour away, if that - I'm going to launch the boat, take my bottle of red wine with me, my fishing rod, a sarny, radio to play some classical music courtesy of BBC Radio 4 and drink in the beautiful scenery again.

Frenchman's Creek - Here I come!

It's going to look STUNNING up there this morning.

I'll take the camera with me and hopefully get a few shots of the mist on the water and post them up a little bit later with another description.

Cheers!

Well, that was rather delicious!

Just got in the door a few minutes ago.

Arrived at my boat, rowed as fast as I could upstream, really pegging it, giving it some, arrived at the mouth of Frenchmans's Creek in half light, which was a bit of a shame, just missed the best of it by about 20 minutes, nevertheless, was still absolutely beautiful.

Rowed up the creek halfway, then back out again to Calamansack Creek on the opposite bank, rowed halfway up that one, looked very serene, gorgeous and then back again, about 6 miles in total.

Feel a bit tired now for some daft reason, just gone 9am.

Rather than trunter on I'll post some photos up here on this thread as soon as I've uploaded them and got them on Photobucket.

All in all, most enjoyable, well worth it.

Beautiful. And so true. Success isn't about how much money or how many things you have...it's about how content you are inside.

Bring on the spring and summer again,
that's what I say.

We're in that time of year now when
all the weather does is to howl incessantly,
gales buffeting from the south west, the
sea's building into a highly agitated state,
almost all of the leaves now fallen and
certainly no quiet and peaceful rowing
trips up the Helford River.

As you get older, you learn to appreciate
even more these simple pleasures in life
that money can't buy you.

At least now I've got a super little sailing
yacht, it's only 19' long with a wee little
cabin on her, so soon I shall have her out
on the water, if it gets a little nippy on
deck, I can always drop down below for
a quick cup of tea.

It's just about big enough to sleep on,
all I need now is to put a very small wood
burner on board, converted out of an old
gas bottle or similar and I'm all set to go.

I might even sail her across the English
Channel to France next year and take her
down through the canals of France making
my way slowly through the countryside
popping out eventually into the
Mediterranean and a much warmer
climate. She's a bilge keel so will float
well enough in just 18" of water.

I've also got my eye on a disused former
ships open lifeboat at the moment, 26'
long, I'm thinking I may put an old
Peugeot 405d 1905cc car engine in her
(after marinisation of course), she's only
a few hundred quid but will make one hec
of a good seaworthy fishing boat for
inshore use around here.

Options, options, options.

Everybody should have has his/ her own measure of what is success. Unfortunately, most of the people now consider money as the only criteria for success.
I think you have a talent for writing books. I am sure that if you take it up, you will also be able to come up with something that is equivalent to frenchman's creek.
Good luck if you do.
