Productivity tips while traveling

Hi,

What suggestions can you bring for frequent travelers? This may include people who travel by plane / by train / by car.

As suggestions I mean anything that can save you time, money or make you more productive in general.

Also, can you suggest any good book on the topic? Here are a few of my own.

1. Reading in the airport may be a bit difficult but you can listen to audiobooks. At Audible.com you can get two books for $22 (two credits).

2. Arrange transportation from and to the airport in advance. Taxi drivers at the airport are usually very expensive and services like Uber are a far better option.

3. Use the downtime on the plane. Virtually all planes allow for open laptops in this time. If you feel you don't have enough space for this, write in a book or take notes on your phone. The 3 - 4 hour trip is time that can be translated in $100 - $300 - $500.

4. When you have to travel for a long distance, don't push your body to the absolute limit. I've traveled for 48 hours in a row, without sleep and this was not a good thing. Unless you have to be there no matter what, aim to get your night sleep at a hotel. It costs $50 or so but it is your health in the line.

Any other practical suggestions welcomed

Great pointers! We all have to find ways to make the most of our time, even if it's sitting in our cars in traffic as part of a daily commute.

Key point that you made about taxi's is so important in ALL areas of this process: PLAN IN ADVANCE!

Don't find yourself in a situation where you WISH that you had brought a book, audio book, mp3 recording or whatever it may be.

As the old saying goes, "It's better to have and not need than to need and not have".

Here are a few more I can think about:

    1. Get priority check-in. It costs a bit more but waiting in line takes time. Time equals money.

    2. Getting access to special lounges is worth your time and money in general. If you have to wait, you'll have to wait somewhere. If you go to a bar, you'll have to order something, usually overpriced. So if you can get access to the business lounge, you'll have a quiet place to work until your plane is up.

    3. Roaming costs a lot of money. Just buy a pre-paid card when you reach in another country.

    4. When driving by car - have an audio-book always ready. You may not always been in the mood for this but when you do, you'll absorb info fast.

    5. Use the damn handsfree system from your phone when driving.

    6. Don't leave in the last moment but don't leave too early either. It won't help you if you get there two hours early. Take into account any delays you may face but try to be there on time. You wouldn't go to a movie one hour before it starts so I see no reason to leave for the airport four hours before your flight.

    7. Answer emails using an email client while on the phone. These will be sent once you get in range of an wi-fi connection but will be sent.

    8. Noise canceling headphones are amazing. Get a pair, even if a cheap one.

    9. Stop checking your damn Facebook every 15 minutes. Nothing new happened. People survived without being in touch every 15 minutes before. Better yet, delete Facebook from your phone.
