Motivational Story: Helping to Help Yourself

Hi all,

A story tells how, once, a man was invited to visit both heaven and hell. First, he went to hell, where he found all the tormented souls sitting at long tables, laden with all kinds of wonderful food, yet they were starving and howling with hunger. Each soul had a spoon, but the spoons were so long that they couldn't get them into their mouths. Their frustration was their torment.

Then he went to heaven and, to his amazement, there too he found the souls of the blessed, sitting at long tables, laden with all kinds of wonderful food, but they were all well fed and contented. Each had a spoon just as long as the spoons in hell, but they were able to receive all the food they needed. They were feeding each other. Their mutual service was their blessing.

Whatever your business, always remember that reciprocity is rarely ever a one-way deal. Offer your prospects something of value, be it information or a tool that will help them achieve what it is they want to achieve, and you will be rewarded.

Not everything has to be sold. Sometimes sharing the good stuff helps you to move forward.

An example:

I have just started out in the offline world and have already picked up 4 clients in just over a week, with one larger client interested in my services through word-of-mouth. Naturally, I have held consultations with each and every one of my clients - and I have done so for free.

Granted, our time is valuable. But for one hour of my time, advising my prospects on what direction they should head in, I firmly believe that my generocity and honesty in helping them has been the extra push that has turned prospects into paying customers. I didn't sell anything to them - I merely shared my knowledge and this alone was reciprocated in business.

Why? Because why would you not trust someone who's taken time out of their schedule to help you with your business? And when a prospect talks to their friends and business contacts, do you think that the mention of a free, informal business-changing consultation will really fall on deaf ears?

So the next time you feel that you deserve payment for your help, consider the potential payment in the long-term and share your expertise.

Make your prospect walk away with clarity and knowledge - your name will stick.

Alex, Great post! I never heard that story but I will have to share your post with a few friends ;-)

I think all too often people in business think of one thing...THEMSELVES...without first thinking of how they can serve others. Reciprocity is the name of the game...give Value to others and they will come to you with out having to use the old pushy Sales tactics.

I think this is the best way to go about, helping your potential clients initially with some free advice or knowledge sharing could be a deal clincher many a times.i have done this with some of my clients.I am a geek ,very often during my initial discussions i have shared many crucial things which made him more clear about his requirements and ultimately business came to me.
though there were some cases also where after grabbing crucial information from me they just vanished from the face of planet. But my riches with this approach outweigh those bad people.

Great point Vikram. In anything you do, there will always be times when people take as much as they can and then vanish for whatever reason. But the good always outweighs the bad

I believe it was Henry ford that said when you
die all you can take is your principles and ethics.

Doing what we do just for money is a dead end street.

True motivation comes from achieving with a vision and
a purpose for something greater and personal.

The gratification of truly providing a service even when
    it is free is priceless.

    Thanks for your post
