Just a message of inspiration for other marketers... don't give up!

We're often led to believe that in internet marketing, it is all "instant money".

It's often not really how it is.

I spent best part of a year creating a Clickbank product - a 330 page book.

Like many marketers doing things for the first time, I thought "This book is awesome. It's gonna be a stampede. I'm going to get rich quick!"

It didn't happen. For the first few months I made barely any sales at all.

However, I persisted. I improved my sales materials. I did some link building.

And now the product has started selling. I've got myself an affiliate who is making consistent sales - and I'm guessing it must be converting well for them because they are sticking with it.

Another example - just over a year ago I created a ringtone web site and did some SEO. Within a couple of months it got into the top ten on google for the phrase "free iphone ringtones" and started making me a few bucks. Not bad. Another ringtone company made me an offer and I sold the site. I should have hung in there... right when I was in the sales process for the site, around a year after I created it, it suddenly jumped up several places in the SERPS and the traffic doubled.

So I have a few tips to summarize with here.

1) Success sometimes takes a while. Don't give up.
2) Sites sometimes take a while to show their true form. Don't just offload it if it hasn't hit pay dirt within a couple of months.
3) If you are an affiliate, don't just test out the best performing Clickbank products. Try some others - they might not have any gravity yet because they haven't achieved the gravity to attract the really good affiliates yet. You don't know how well something is going to convert until you actually try it.
4) Don't sit back while you wait for something to show form. Keep developing other ideas.

As they say, "overnight success often takes a few years"....

Happy summer everyone!
Alex.

    Very good post and replies!

I got lucky really early in my life running big music events. But then I got complacent with my success and lost a lot of money in the process. I then found I had to relearn everything again and starting out with huge debts was really difficult. But over that time period I made great progress because of my sheer will and determination to succeed again!

I found there is a day which I call "Judgement Day" that is the day that determines whether you taste success or give in to failure. Its this day that you will be tested the hardest and the symptoms of it are quite familiar. Panic, fear, worry, low self worth etc. If you can survive past this day and you know in your gut that you are doing the right thing then you will succeed if you dont give up!

I urge people to thing small first. Making your first $ is the best feeling ever. This is often all you need to have the will to carry on.

    It doesnt happen over night.

There is no such thing as a magic pill or button.

Just hard work, persistance and pure determination!

i agree and disagree you need to keep trying but the person only has certain amount of money to put in and lets say everytime they spend money for the new methods and dont make money they get more and more disappointed and get themselves more indebt and if you simply dont see yourself making money online then you should just give up cuz this making money online is not for everybody some people get it and some people dont get it you need to decide which one are you the one who gets it or the one who doesnt get it and only spending money on methods and not making any money from the methods.

Thank you for the encouragement. I've been told so many times before that success online takes a lot of work and effort and that initial failures are normal. It just feels really bad though when you actually experience failing. I have to remind myself every time that this is all part of the process.

    Great advice Alex,

one more thing about not taking action.
The only time you don't need to be taking
action and only sitting back and watching is
when you are doing some testing.

Sometimes it is important to test stuff for a
period of time without touching, so you know
what is going on and what needs to be changed.

I agree with you. Particularly about the concept that sometimes it takes a while for a webpage or website to surface in the rankings and that once you have put in a fair effort, rather than be discouraged by it's lack of success, just put your efforts into another approach or niche.

I also agree that the folks who hit big bucks in internet marketing in a few months are very few and far in between.

So what is your Clickbank product? I can see that you might not have mentionned it before for fear that you would be slammed by others as promoting, but, it's okay now that I've asked.

I had my own business and was very successful for 5 years, In 2003 I created my own ebook linked to my business at the time after following shawn casey's (Internet guru) methods in "cash flow circle". That taught me how to create a sales page and a thank you page, how to build a list of subscribers with an autoresponder and so on. I did not realise the full potential of the marketing on the internet for my product, but astonishingly I made sales. I just used the product as a conduit for my business.

Low and behold when the recession came my business went down the pan, so now I am marketing full steam ahead with my products to build back an income.

    So yes Never Give Up.

Just one question - If you're concentrating on one niche, what amount of time should you give it to work? I'm just wondering whether there's a cut-off point where you give up and move onto a new niche?

Thanks for all the responses and positive feedback folks, awesome!! Good to see all this motivation, dreams and drive.

My CB product is the one in my sig file.

Another thing worth considering... we hear stories of the "mega-success" entrepreneurs but they don't tell us about all the embarrassing flops that it took to learn to build that mega site and campaign. When I think back to the beginning of my IM efforts, I cringe a little now. But that's how it is. Everyone makes mistakes, they are necessary for learning. The ones who succeed are the ones who learn from the mistakes and then apply that knowledge.

@Jacksprat... honestly, I would suggest never giving up on a niche.

It only costs you a few bucks a year to keep your sites alive... you can always work on something you are more motivated by for a while and come back to the others later when you are feeling enthusiastic about them. In the meantime, you have acquired domain age and possibly pagerank. I've been in situations and I know many others have too, where sites they have "abandoned" have started taking off months later. By all means start with a new niche that you are all fired up about - but hang on to the other stuff... even if you just put a few ads on the pages and get a trickle of income from google traffic... it's really nice to get those occasional checks from the ad companies when you aren't expecting them.
Another thing to consider is development of forum or community sites where others do some of the building for you. This is part of the success of Mark Pincus of plentyoffish. Others build all the pages, and with the option to appoint moderators, the forums are largely self governing.
Takes more work to develop that kind of site but I'm investigating it right now with a particular dating niche I have not seen covered anywhere at all. I'm not telling you what it is - but here's a clue: How many ways can you categorize people? For every categorization, there is a potential niche.

I read a book that I will remember for the rest of my life and I think if that book is published in English, you should grab a copy and read about it, too. It's called "Never a failure! All are challenges". The book tells a story of a boy who is born in a farmer family but doesn't want to become a farmer. He tries to escape from his family fourth times and never succeed. He is punished by his father, locked up in the house and then in the fifth time, he manages to escape.

Well, that boy is a former Huyndai chairman, Chung Ju Yung. He met a lot of failures in his life. When Huyndai was a small car fixing workshop, he faced many challenges. No customers, no money, yet he never gave up and now, Huyndai has became a really giant in heavy industry.

Just want to share with you the philosophy which inspires me since I was a little boy. There are no failures, all are challenges and with challenges, we can overcome them.

    Have a great summer guys
