Parents lied when they said you could be anything in life...

Does anyone remember the time when people asked what you wanted to be? You could be a President, doctor, lawyer, school teacher, fire fighter, etc. Next people (family) would tell you ," you can be anything you want". Straight out lie just like Santa Clause or the Tooth fairy. However you can become anything you want while being passionate about it. You must have passion in order to be successful. Please fellow mind warriors elaborate. Thank you in advance.

It's more like. You can be anything you want if you work your ass off towards your goals.

    Passion is nothing without action.

    Cheers,

It's a little hard for me to imagine someone being passionate about something, and I mean truly passionate about it, and not take some sort of action toward it in whatever way that's relevant.

To me passion at its heart IS action and the strong desire combined.

When the guy that's into cars imagines himself owning his dream cars he may not have them right at this moment, but he might be working his ass off to some day afford them.

It would be very hard to convince me that anyone can be truly passionate about something, even something theoretical like an idea, and not take action toward it in some way.

Passion to me is action lead by desire, so it would be impossible to be truly passionate about anything without taking at least the basic steps to somehow someday attain it.

On another note, however, regarding the OP...

I would complete the title of this thread with: "...as long as you want it badly enough and strive for it without giving up."

That's action led by strong desire right there. Our parents didn't lie to us, they just didn't give us the whole picture. That's all.

This is very true but passion is what is needed to be successful. When hard times hit is going to be passion that keeps you going. You have to be passionate about what you do.

Wanting something really bad means that all that you do and everything you have done leads to what you wanted to be. If you give up now, then there's you're reason for not being to be.

And as all childhood dreams are, as we mature we change our perspective in life.

Can you be anything you want? Yes, and no.

Of course you need to be motivated......call it passion, initiative,
focus, whatever. And you need discipline, perseverance and a
    positive attitude.

But there is more to it than that. You can be the most motivated
person but if you try something you have no aptitude for it may
take several lifetimes to strike success.

Try to be an opera singer when you are tone deaf..........good luck
achieving your goal. Try being an Olympic sprinter when you run
a 15 second 100 meters. Try being a world class author when you
can't spell or write a coherent sentence.

    You get the idea..............

But start with something you have an aptitude for and
add right attitude and perseverance and you should be
quite successful. Not 100% guaranteed but probably.

I think there is some measure of Truth in what OP says.

However, sometimes speaking the BRUTAL Truth is not always a productive.angle to take in Life.

If your kid comes out to you who has Down Syndrome and says he wants to be a Lawyer some day then do you say " no son shoot for something much smaller than that " ?

You should be encouraging and be an inspiration at all times. I think you want to be a realist, of course.

But a parent should NEVER say "oh your are not capable of being this"

That is just wrong and sets your kid up for failure , imo !

There was a psych study a while back which concluded that it is better to compliment your children on their effort, rather than flattering them about potential and big brains. Those who experience the former tend to have more success in life.

Just my take on things, but I don't think it's helpful to tell kids they can be anything they want to be. Not because they can't, but because it doesn't help them discover themselves. If anything, it fosters an unhealthy ego and sense of entitlement. Take it from someone who knows.

I don't think parents lied when they said you could be anything in life. However, this will depend on how you approach things, how you impart wisdom to your kids. Telling kids you could be anything in life means that all things are possible if you believe on it and you work for it. Telling it means you are motivating them and to live life with positivity. However, while we pursue for positivity there should also be a balance between positivity and being realistic.

You can be anything you want ... if you have the developed aptitude and focus.

If you're 5'-3 ,235lb. your NBA point guard goal needs adjusting. Unless you have miraculous hops.

That's true. Mugsy had serious hops. Never been one before Mugsy, and hasn't been one since. Talk about a freak of nature. It's a wonder he never hurt himself coming down after a dunk. It must have been like jumping from a second story window at 5 ft. -3.

A loving parent who works hard and has a good work ethic will provide a much better example for their child than one who simply spouts motivational theories.
