YOU'RE NEVER GONNA FEEL LIKE DOING IT

Get off of Facebook.

Close the UFC website (massive MMA fan here ;-)).

Put your phone on silent.

And GO DO THE THING YOU NEED TO DO...

...whether you feel like doing it or not.

So many people actually think - that them not feeling like doing something - is actually a good enough excuse not to do something!! THAT'S CRAZY.

Oh I don't feel like going to the gym today.

I don't feel like working on my business today.

I don't feel like advertising my site today.

And so they don't do it - because they actually THINK that's a viable excuse - NOT TO DO IT!

What the hell?

But that's the society we live in - we're conditioned to believe that we should let how we feel - our emotions affect the actions that we take...

...thats B.S.

I can tell you right now that if all the greats of the world WAITED until they felt like doing something before taking action - they won't have achieved anything.

But the beautiful thing is - when you take action REGARDLESS of how you feel, regardless of whether you've got a headache, regardless of whether you feel like procrastinating, regardless of that negative voice in your head telling you 'you can't do it' - you begin to build momentum in what it is that you're doing and your brain gives you access to the resources that are going to help you.

This is called taking right action.

Don't wait for some motivation to come along - take ACTION and you'll become motivated.

A lot of people believe it's motivation first (feeling good), taking action second. Don't get me wrong - motivation is great and you should do whatever you can to motivate yourself...

...but if you get in to the habit of DEPENDING on being motivated in order to take action - you'll never have any consistency and you'll begin to rationalize why not taking action when you're not motivated is a good thing (huh?!)...

...FLIP IT AROUND.

TAKE ACTION REGARDLESS OF HOW YOU FEEL - AND THE MOTIVATION WILL COME SECOND.

TRUST.

Call me weird but I wake up every day excited about what
I'm going to do that day. You know you're in the right business
when you'd rather be awake than asleep because your real life
is better than most people's dreams.

What's keeping you up late and getting you up early? If the
answer is nothing I highly recommend you find something else
    to do.

    Very well put.

I've said it many times; "work ain't work when you're having fun."

If you don't enjoy what you do maybe you are in the wrong profession.

Guys - couldn't agree more about LOVING what you do.

That isn't what I'm getting at here - I'm talking about taking action regardless of whether you feel like doing it or not.

      In the gym.

      In business.

In stepping outside your comfort zone and trying something new.

You're not always going to feel like doing something you've never done before.

And hey, if you two always feel like doing the things you know you should be doing all the time - that's AWESOME. Seriously.

      From my experience...

...not many people LOVE working out and eating healthy - does that mean they shouldn't do it?

Not many people LOVE stepping outside of their comfort zone and trying something new - does that mean they shouldn't do it?

Just because you don't start out loving something from Day 1 - doesn't mean you quit.

By all means LOVE what you do - but don't DEPEND on feeling good before taking action.

      Take right action.

Regardless of how you feel because you're not always going to feel like doing the thing you know you should be doing.

      Appreciate your input guys ;-)

        Love these posts!

Take action. Do it even if you don't feel like it. Still do it. Your original post was perfect.

It's all about just doing it. This is why the term Just Do It for Nike became such a unique hit because of its simplistic way of solving the problem of not doing it.

        If not today, when?

I agree with you 100% Zak. Following your feelings and emotions won't get you anywhere except for the place you're right now. If your feelings and emotions were helping you achieve your goals then you probably would've achieved them already.

You have to be willing to be uncomfortable and expand your comfort zone every day. The successful version of yourself is not there yet. In order to reach your potential, you have to practice discipline and make it a priority over your feelings and emotions. Deep down you know if you could take emotions and feelings out of the equation, you could do anything you put your mind to.

Fear, anxiety, and worry are emotions that will keep you from getting what you want in life. So, you have to be aware of this and make your decisions based upon the understanding that deciding to do the right thing even when you don't feel like it, is exactly what you need to do to go from where you are to where you want to be.

Awesome follow-up to my post bro.

It's so true - fear, anxiety, worry are going to be emotions you feel along the way - because you're stepping outside your comfort zone.

I agree 100% you've got to love what you do - the thing is, it's not as simple as just waking up one day and loving everything you have to do to get where you want to be.

You have to take action regardless of how you feel - whether that's in business, with your diet, with working out, with your confidence - ANYTHING.

Just take action - regardless of how you feel.

Practicing the self discipline it takes to get up everyday and work on your business is a choice. Some people like me tinker and futz around with my fledgling website. I try to learn something everyday and in time I know I'll succeed. I have no false impression I'll turn 30k in an hour by blasting my emails to the globe.

BUT.. there are those who are lazy. After being in sales for the past 30 years, I can say as a fact there is a direct correlation between effort and success. The market has a way of rewarding lazy... you usually fail.

So it is best to practice the habit of committing some time each day to your business. It's yours and yours alone. You will get out exactly what you put in.

  • Zak,

When I first started in this field, I pretending to be "working" and doing exactly the things you are talking about. I was busy checking Facebook, answering emails every half hour or so, instant messaging people. At the end of my workday, I had accomplished very little.

At some point I decided to focus only on work related things, not surprisingly my business took off. If you focus on working even for a relative short time like 4 hours without interruption, it's amazing what you can get done. I even started posting hours on my office door so my family would respect my work time a little more as well.

      Exactly!

People can be 'busy' - that doesn't necessarily mean they're being productive.

Always make sure you focus on taking action towards what is going to take you to the next level - what is going to produce results for you.

The Thought is Worse Than the Application! Does that make sense?

It means the thought of having to do something seems like too much hard work, and can prevent you from actually doing it, but if you can get past the thought of it, and action it, then you realise the doing of it, is not as bad as the thought of doing it.

    Hence...

      So true Dave!

When you procrastinate about doing something - you make it SO MUCH HARDER then it actually is, that thought of doing it prevents you from taking action altogether...

...but when you actually JUST DO IT - it's nothing like what your mind made it out to be.

I disagree with you'll never feel like doing it, but agree with the message as a whole. We make less decisions then we think, and most of our daily tasks are formed from habits.

When we get into the habit of doing things, it becomes natural. When we see progress, that's what keeping us happy & striving for more.

    Excellent post.

I disagree with the "you will never feel like doing it". I found that some days I feel really motivated to work and others I just don't feel like it. But as you mentioned the key is to take action everyday whether you feel like it or not.

    Cheers,

I've experience the feeling of not wanting to do something quite a lot when I was younger. I've always been the type to get bored with one thing easily and I feel like this is somewhat connected to this. I think it took a while before I finally find the things that I am passionate about.

Trust is a feeling. Interesting that it is mentioned last as the thing to do.

Meaning you can change what you feel like doing.

Another way to put is what professional athletes do. It is called warming up. Then you feel like doing something bigger. The warm up is preceded by your vision, where you look to in your mind. What do you see? What would you like to see? There, you changed it.

You are never going to feel like doing it.

Well, if you don’t learn to get your feelings in support of what you are doing then you will eventually burn out, get bored, or just quit because it sucks. You are just forcing yourself to do what you need to and that always has a time limit on its effectiveness. Learn to align your feelings with what you need to do and then you can keep going because you do feel like doing it.

Learn to feel like doing it and you practically there.

Now the weird part. Sometimes it is perfectly ok to force yourself to do what you need too. It is called will power.

Will power is only the forerunner to self-discipline

Will power is a wonderful short term use of the ego.

Ever notice how ego maniacs tend to run out of steam? It is not just because of the enormous amount of energy it takes to sustain sheer force of will. It is also because will power is only designed to be used short term.

Think of your biceps and your neck muscles. Ever wonder why you can’t hold up your hand for more than a few minutes at a time without your arm getting exhausted? While your neck holds your head up all day long without much of a problem. The difference is in the TYPE of muscle you are using. Your biceps are designed for short term heavy lifting while your neck can’t really do fifteen push-ups very well.

There is a trade off to get the best of both worlds. Will power is your biceps and self-discipline is your neck. In other words – when was the last time you had a work out for your neck muscles? Not very often I bet! But will power? That gets it every day.

The point is what to use for what – don’t depend on will power long term. Or beat yourself up when will power does not cut it to get out of bed early day after day after day.

    Confuse them at your peril.

Great post Zak your right "take action" just do it for a long time I got into the habit of learning, learning and more learning but never taking real action on the knowledge I had learnt then eventually I did buckle down and stopped dreaming of what could be and within a few weeks implementing stuff and staying focus I was seeing results (money) coming in.

Don't get me wrong I still have my ups and downs and I do get distracted now and then but I now make sure I commit at least 2-3 hours a day of solid action to move my business forward online.

    Hi Zak,

Understand where you are coming from.

There are always circumstances or duties that make us
uncomfortable. We have to press on nonetheless.

I believe this separates successful people from the
    unsuccessful.

Do what you should do when you should do it.
