Set Goals Everyday...

Hi Guys,

I thought i would post here with a simple concept or philosophy that has literally changed my life and of course my business.

Here it is:

"Write a list of goals EVERYDAY!"

That's it!

Stick to your most wanted goals everyday - so you can have a shortlist of 10 - 15 but even before you do this it is worthwhile to sit down with a pen and paper and write ALL of your goals down.

By doing this a lot of things happen - it also may be different for each person as we are all individuals.

One thing that it will give you though is CLARITY!

You will know WHY you are doing this stuff - it shouldn't be to JUST pay the bills - that is a not a goal it is a must - it is like making a goal to eat everyday - that is something you need to do.

When you are writing your goals, write down what you REALLY want.

Everyday...

I will do another post a bit later on how to get started taking action to achieve those goals but what are your thoughts about goal setting and how do you find it helps you?

To Your Success,

Chris Jones

Hey, Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! I also think this is very important... to take this one step further...

After you've written your goals for the day... make an honest effort to wright down 3 things that you can do today in order to move closer to accomplishing that go.

Everyday you do this you will not have a reason to horse around and not be productive. What you need to do is right in front of you. Take the action!

NOTE TO MODS: Sorry for making my sig link too big - won't happen again! Sorry I must have missed that rule.

        Hi Sarah,

I write my goals first thing in the morning - before i start work and then last thing at night.

It helps because it will go into your sub conscious if you keep on doing it and then your sub conscious will start to give you ideas you need to act on to achieve those goals. Just write them morning and night and have faith that you will achieve them.

I am not saying you will magic them out of thin air, you will need to work - but what i am saying is that if you have faith you will start to get ideas and thoughts that allow you to take different actions to achieve your goals.

        Hope that helps,

        All the best,

        Chris Jones

I do the same thing. Got a list of 3-4 goals per day. These are my most important tasks. Add deadlines to your them and don't go to bed until your most important tasks are done. Simple and effective.

    Cheers,

Great topic. When overwhelmed with tasks, I think it's best to just pick 3 or 4 tasks you'll focus on that day, and don't worry about the rest. Once you decide that, then you can just not worry about the rest. That's helped me. I tend think of a goal as more of a longer-term thing, and daily things more of a task that might take me towards the larger goal. But it all comes down to the same thing of making a plan and writing it down.

      Hi Sunny,

      Thanks man, absolutely.

You are spot on, one of the things that helped me think i can actually achieve the goals, to start was to visualize myself achieving all of the goals and really FEEL that I had done it.

      Then to ask the question:

"What did i do to achieve these goals?"

Then, like you say i would brainstorm a list of things that I have done to achieve the goals and then pick the top from the list and get started everyday.

Excellent, yes it really helps, you will still get down and difficult days but just by having that list you will find that you quickly get back on track and a lot of the work is focus.

      Hi C.G

Absolutely, Think and Grow Rich style - adding a date when you will have the money, vacation etc... whatever the goal is can really help.

You are right ^ - but starting with just goals, so your dreams it is easy to get into a habit of limiting your dreams to what you THINK you could achieve.

You mustn't do that - you should set them high so they motivate you everyday and the "how to" will come to you.

A thing that has worked for me, is to have a long term goal.

Then I imagine myself having accomplished that goal and what that would feel like.

Once I have that, i find that the smaller and shorter every month or every day goals just kind of show up without me needing to stress over them. Sometimes only one short term goal for the day. Sometimes more than one.

Since getting my head together in this way, my days have been a lot more enjoyable, and a lot more productive.

        Hi Michael,

Absolutely, I actually have Jim Rohn style goals - 1 year, 5 year and 10 year goals but i put a few easy weekly and monthly goals in there that push me but keep me going.

I can see your way would work too, the main thing is direction and then motivation to make sure the ship sails faster.

Thanks for your views, honestly this goal setting stuff has changed my life!

        All the best,

      Hi Creed,

Yes, I have as a matter of fact.

The writing of goals will definitely help to keep you focused.

What i do to avoid procrastination is similar - write out 5 - 6 things that you need to do tomorrow.

Do it just before going to bed tonight and then take action on the most pressing task first thing tomorrow.

We will always procrastinate, as Tony Robbins teaches it is the human need to avoid pain.

Starting a biz, or working on something that does not give rewards straight away can be painful - if you push through it though and take action on your list and stick with it - making your self uncomfortable in the short term and ticking those things off your list is also the keys to self confidence.

Remember when you were a kid and your parents kept on at you to tidy your room?

      Remember how annoying that was?

Still what do we all say to our parents once it is done:

"I am glad it is done I love it now - I know where everything is!"

Well, nothing is different now, stay disciplined - write goals and build plans and work on them everyday and you will be well on your way.

      Hope this helps,

      All the best,

      Chris Jones

Its so simple, yet so effective!

Before I created schedules and goals I was running around like a headless chicken not knowing what I had to do and when.. Since I upped my goal planning, my productivity has increased ten-fold!

  • I like your post Chris.

It's easy to have a "big picture" goal in mind; start a new business, get a college degree, run a marathon or else. The hardest part is how to make it happen. How does the goal/dream translates in actions?

Bringing the "big picture" down to a more scalable, manageable "size" - of 3-5 tasks or mini-goals per day - is a great way to do so, as you suggest.

Cause in the end, it's the sum of all those daily achievements that will create the "big picture" someone has in mind. A sum that, at times, might even exceed expectations.

Lao Tzu (a Chinese philosopher) had a great saying: "A journey of a 1000 miles begins with a single step". Making the 1st step is important in any new venture.

      Thanks Patrick,

      Yep, totally agree.

Big goals - much bigger than you THINK you will achieve will cause you to make different plans and as long as they motivate you, force you to take different actions and that is the key.

      The compound effect in action!

As Einstein said "Compound interest is the most powerful force in the Universe!",

      All the best,

Isn't everyday a bit too much?

I think goals should be short term but not that short term coz nothing can be achieved without patience.

      Hey,

I don't change my goals - I write down the SAME goals everyday - if i feel like changing the goals i will but every morning i start with WHY i am doing this - what do i WANT?

I have 1 year, 5 year and 10 year goals, I also have weekly goals and targets,

A quick list every morning going through my immediate goals for the week and the month,

Works for me, but of course whatever you find works - there is no RIGHT way of doing this stuff just the RESULTS you are getting.

Instead of "goals" I prefer to think of it like this:

An overall vision for my life and some more specific intentions around that.

Then I break that down into small do-able inspired actions to get done every day.

Then I actually do those things... every single day, just like you are saying. Probably about 60-80 small actions.

In your language, my goal every day is to take small steps to my bigger goals.

For instance my goal might be "Finish my December Books" but the daily actions are things like: download paypal activity, download bank statement, calculate paypal income, calculate pay pal expense, calculate bank expenses, calculate bank income, process receipts, total receipts, total all income, total all expenses, estimate tax for the month.

So as you can see doing books takes at least 10 small actions. I may only do 3 of these per day and I get my books done in a few days.

This keeps projects from seeming to big and makes everything I do very simple, flexible and breezy.

      I do the same ^

I have my goals and I have my VISION - which is essentially the BIG GOAL!

      The END GAME.

I do exactly the same - except the GOALS i set daily are things to motivate me.

      So my goals would be:

      Buy New BMW M4 (I have the M3! )

      Buy New House

      Decorate House Top To Bottom

Buy New Bed With TV on it.

The day to day tasks are different, for instance doing my accounts is a given - i dont set it as a goal as it is like setting "PAy the bills" as a goal.

My to-do list has all that stuff on,

But my goals, the way i am using it are 1 year, 5 year and 10 year - dreams and things i want in my life.

My vision is what I want to be remembered as and where i am going.

My to do list is the stuff i need to do to achieve the two above,

      BUT...

Again, there is no right way of doing this - whatever brings the RESULTS.

      All the best,

      Chris Jones

Wrong you should not set goals everyday. Set 5 goals that you want to achieve. Then set the tasks to do everyday to get closer to those goals! This is how Warren buffet work on his goals.

True! Setting a goals every day is one of the best methods so you can improve yourself.

But, do think that the Goal is more then the Journey? People often see the goals and usually forgot that they have find the real path to the goal! I think that if you always know what path to choose you will always end up with the ''mission complete''.

If you never enjoy in the journey, you will never know why you reach the destination. I know people who are full with visions and ideas and sets to much goals, but at the end they feel defeated, even if they reach the goal.

In my point of view, every journey who is leading to the goal who is not connected to the material world, is the right goal!

I agree, although I might word it a little differently. To me having a daily to do list is important. Plus it is motivating and liberating to draw a line through each item on the list as they are completed.

This really helps for focusing as well. I don't know about you, but it is easy to get off track when setting in front of a computer all day.

This is essential! Having goals written and visible is a the significant step towards achieving them! Without constant affirmation and emotional involvement our goals do not have prominence that they should.
