Mark Zuckerberg shared some simple advice for success

Everyone knows the story of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who co-founded Facebook, dropped out of college and by age 23, thanks to the site's success, became a self-made billionaire.

So when he hosted an impromptu Ask-Me-Anything session on Facebook last week, it's not a surprise that someone asked him "What's the most important secret of success?"

He replied simply, "Don't give up."

Great point - not giving up is certainly important, but that isn't the only thing.

I have a buggy whip business.......don't worry, I won't ever give up.......will I be successful? Probably in making the best buggy whip in the world. To that end I will have success, but if my goal is to become wealthy from this endeavor, I just won't work. I could devote 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the rest of my life and probably won't make even $1,000.

There has to be more than persistence. Evolution of your thinking, testing, reacting, learning, growing, and more, have to be part of the plan as well.

Facebok, Twitter and Youtube now are the best source to get traffic to any business, so is not silly

Facebook and Twitter are great company that work hard to be to the position that they have, YouTube well Google buy and put their brand so they become the top. (Im not a crazy fan, only saying the trust)

A Idea can turn into a beautiful project!!

Not to mention, these are very simple projects.
        • Youtube lets you watch and comment clips online.
        • Twitter gives you 140 characters and hashtags to express yourself.
        • Facebook, well... we all know what it's all about.

These services are perfect examples of the old saying; KISS - Keep it simple, stupid.

So if one would have a "silly idea", taking action on it could result in a multi-billion dollar business.

  • That was a good read.

It's truly lamentable that our preocupation with technicality can at times leave a bad rep to the simple steps.
Especially when considering that simplicity often encompasses something more than "The sum of the parts.". Namely, clarity, obviousness and a certain grasp of the overall future vector of our buisness.

Here's a revised mark zuckerberg advice for success:

    1. Start working on an idea that everyone has been talking about in harvard for ages (so much for "inventing" it)
    2. Make it seem like you're working on HarvardConnections but instead build a competitor
    3. Steal harvard's name "facebook"
    4. Get 5 more people to work on it, and then launch it using harvards infrastructure and connections
    5. Screw over your team
    6. Move to california and make billions
    7. Success
Mark zuckerberg got lucky. He has no knowledge in anything aside from programming. If he didn't get lucky at harvard, he would be working at some low end software firm making $40k a year

No idea why people think zuckerberg's opinion suddenly matters more than it did when he lived in a dorm with 5 people. it doesnt.

    just my opinion

do you know how much of the advancment we have in the modern world is based on similar things ..that the people we remamer just had the right timing..

zuckerberg would have probably started a different company ..and he like bill gates didn't just leave Harvard ..

Marks path is very hard to duplicate ..or near impossible for average people .. as it requires timing and connection and getting in to harverd to work ..

the proper advice to get is from peter thiel.. who funded facebook and was already successful from paypal ..

survivor bias is common .. so liostening to the 1 in ten who build successfull businesses or the 1 in 100 who become very rich or the 1 in 10000 who become billionairs .. can give you false framewors ..

but when you listen to those who fund companies and what they look for that they believe will give a better chance at success ..or why they would invest in someone after one or two failures ..

zuckerberg didn't go through what most business owners go through. trying and failing and changing methods and testing and eventually after 25 tries getting it to work. zuckerberg relied on 10 coincidences to make him succeed purely because of luck. so i think it's hypocritical when he says "persistence is key" when he didnt persist, facebook exploded right away. he didnt have to grind through 5 years of coding and 10 years of marketing. THAT would be persistence. what zuckerberg did was not persistence, so how can he say anything about it? and that's my point.

      Because he's worth billions.

Doesn't matter how he got there, he's there -- and we're not.

doesnt matter how he's got there? bernie madoff got $17 billion scamming stocks. should we all go to jail and hail him like some wise genius and cling to every word he says? that's not the outlook of "all successful people" to cling to every word that comes out of someone's mouth only because they're rich. putin has more money than bill gates, does that mean i should listen to his opinions and raise it on a pedestal?

Where did I say to follow his path? I didn't justify anything slimeball-ish he might have done.

I said you can learn from his journey.

Easy, killa. Use a different analogy.

If you want to learn tennis, are you going to turn down the world's best tennis player because he did time for matchmaking?

And on that note, if you did refuse his service because he was a convicted felon, would you then not watch his replays to see what he did?

Seems to me like your tennis competition who didn't have an issue studying the dude would school you, just based on what they learned from him alone.

Bernie Madoff started his career with a vision, energy, and passion to execute. Somewhere along the line things went awry. It could have been from the get-go, or it could have been later.

Nobody knows, but as a visionary (and like you said, a criminal) you have to learn something.

Maybe in your case the lesson to be learned is not to be a criminal swindler looking to steal 65 billion from people?

Do you know how Zuck found those "coincidences" you speak of? By doing something and believing in something bigger than himself.

Again, doesn't matter how he got there, a thousand ways to skin a cat. He's there and we're not.

Unless you're holding a company worth billions we should know about.

I always believed in one Gary Vaynerchuk quote: "Ideas doesn't matter - execution does"
We all have great ideas and if we start a separate thread we can probably predict most of next 5-10 years "million dollar ideas". The question is "who's gonna execute them and how?"

True indeed! It is so simple and some people may not be satisfied with it but it is very powerful advice from Mark. We simply cannot give up no matter how hard or challenging our path gets.

You must believe that you have what it takes to make it happen and if things are not working out right now, simply analyze them the best you can and change your approach.

If you feel tired and worn out, rest up but make sure it is temporary and you get right back up. Another great saying I hear a lot, "If it was easy then everyone would do it." Keeping this in mind will help you to not give up and keep going.

A more important advice would be to keep moving forward.

If you say just 'don't give up' that could mean still not doing anything, procrastinating, but not giving up on a dream... but for the dream to happen it's important to keep moving forward.

The more simple the answer, the more better people can understand (People dont value when you talk more, they think then that you are boring) Don't Give Up is a good advice and like you said also moving forward

Yeah, I’m going with the people in this thread that says Zuckerberg just got lucky. It’s like trying to learn from Donald Trump. Trump’s father had made quite a bit in real estate before him and handed an empire to Donald to run. But at least Donald had to learn a lot and come back from bankruptcy a couple of times. Donald does have skills, he just can’t teach them. His books are just terrible.

Zuckerberg, on the other hand, is a case of just being rich. So people want to listen to him because he has money. Like might makes right. I have gold so I must be right. It is a self-perpetuating mistake.

Please, just listen to other people who are good at teaching people success. Zuckerberg has not taught anybody anything nor is he even trying. He is staying in his skill set – programming or coding or whatever it is. Let’s just leave him there. We will all be much happier, including him.

Now let’s choose people who are good at producing successful people to listen too. (Although this thread was an interesting side note.) and could be continued in some other way . . .

I guess if I had to find something positive to learn from him it would be to just stay in your own known skill set that will produce business. Coders can make some good scratch. Check all the apps around for further proof.

Lucky or purpose (whathever we decide) he create the hotest social site #2 top most visited in the world and all internet marketers want to promote their busines in that site and remember he is only giving a advice, he no selling book to learn how to dominate social site or whathever, a advice that we need to keep working hard: "Don't give up."

Me personally is not lucky, is was hard work (facebook was a ugly site, i remember when i use myspace) and the persistence made him success in this life.

If you have more gold than I do, I'm going to listen to what you're doing differently to get more than me.

If you got lucky and it fell into your lap, I'm going to look into the people that made it fall into your lap, and what you do with it after you have it -- whether good or bad.

If you worked for it, I'm going to look into what you did to get where you're at, and what milestones you had in your career that set you up for the success you've got.

If you stole it, I'm going to learn about how you managed to get people to believe you (that old persuasive writing thing) and then follow your case as you traverse through the legal system.

You can learn from everybody, good and bad.

I would agree!! Most people give up right before their breakthrough instead of staying focused and weathering the storm. Most individuals that we see as super successful struggled under the radar for many years before they reached the point in their careers where we actually recognized them for what they do.... Never Give UP

The interesting story about successful Millionaire/Billionaire are most of them are "Dropout".

While the rest of us were negotiating curfews and cramming for the SATs, some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs ditched high school to start building their fortunes.

Many did it out of necessity; others had a mentor (or at least a backer looking to piggyback on their success). All, however, had a demon drive to build something of their own. Even at a young age, that commitment and passion can win over investors.

    Here's the article "Dropout"

I think that this is a great advice especially when it comes to internet affiliate marketing. Most people will quit as soon as they face setbacks and make no progress. Those who fail over and over again and still eventually succeed, are the ones that never gave up and learned a lesson from their failures.
