Daily Habits Vs. Daily Rituals

I've seen a lot of posts lately on how to develop good habits, and how to break good ones. If you are like me at all, you probably already wondered how long it actually takes to develop a habit. Is Dr. Maxwell Maltz’s 21 days to form a habit a law to be applied for all habits? And if it is, why doesn't it seem to work for areas of your life like going to the gym, eating an apple every day, or reading. What I came to realize is that a lot of people, myself included, were using habits to define all daily disciplines. Habits, rituals and routines are all so closely related but are different pieces to the habit forming process. The differences of how we define them are subtle but the meaning of each is very distinct for how our minds work.

Habits

Habits, through regular repetition, are a formed type of behavior that have turned into being nearly or entirely involuntary. In other words, habits are only habits when they are part of our unconscious daily disciplines.

Examples: Brushing your teeth, eating food with a fork or a spoon, action of how we do certain activities like running, or curls at the gym etc...

Rituals

Rituals, on the other hand, are what I would call our conscious daily disciplines. They are essential in helping us form habits. Without the act or series of acts in a regular repeated and set precise manner, habits will never be able to form effectively.

Examples: Going to gym, Dieting with a variety of different foods, reading a book

The caveat about daily rituals we set for ourselves like working out is that unless we are performing a discipline at the same time of day and in the same way or manner each time, we should not expect the discipline to ever really enter our unconscious mind. Therefore never becoming a habit.

Routine

Routines help make your rituals turn into habits by giving you a regular way of doing things in a particular order. You can make certain routines a habit if they are done consistently everyday.

Examples: [Waking up -->Brushing your teeth -->Going to the washroom -->Shower ]

Question

1. What conscious daily disciplines do you do today that you have been defining as habits?

Thanks. Would love to hear your thoughts.

being ..very honest with why you have the habits you do now and what you get from them weather the are optimal or sub optimal..

if you really understand your own incentive structure ..why you do what you do..it makes it a lot easier to understand why you have the habits you do..

most of your habits have been picked up over years and are nested together..it is very difficult to change any without understanding how your habits support each other ..

personal i doubt i will ever develop the habit of going to the gym to work out for any length of time .. so i have had to find other way to get my weight down after all.. the gym is a real new concept .. human did well for 100 thousand years without them
