Are you a mentally strong person? Find out..

Hey Guys,

I was day dreaming yesterday and I was thinking, 'Who do I want to become as a person? If I could choose, what traits would I have?' This lead me to think about mentally strong people, and what exactly that means.

Well here is my idea of a mentally strong person, what do you guys think?

1. A mentally strong person demonstrates emotional control. They don't get angry easily and try to find the positive side of situations. If they make a mistake they don't get anxious about it, they see what they did wrong, fix it and learn from it. However, emotional control does not mean showing no emotion. Sure, they'll cry sometimes or get frustrated, but they understand it is temporary and move forward.

2. A mentally strong person exhibits confidence. They have confidence in themselves and their decisions. But they are not arrogant; they still seek advice from others and take it into consideration when making their own decisions.

3. A mentally strong person embraces change. If something goes wrong they don't mope around about it, they look at what went wrong and fix it. Or they look for future change and try to get ahead of the pack. They adapt.

4. A mentally strong person takes risks. Risks are a very important part of life. If no one took any risks we would be stuck in a world of mediocracy. Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and give it a shot.

5. A mentally strong person continuously raises the bar. They are always looking to do something better, improve on their skills and traits. They don't want to be stuck at where they are right now, they want to continuously move forward.

What do you think about my idea of a mentally strong person? Have you got anything to add?

Cheers, Zach.

    Hmm, let's see...

    1. Total emotional control is my current challenge. For total control i need to release completely on past issues so i can be perfectly present without having to deal with past crap. Not there yet. But i have a feeling the majority of people aren't yet.

    2. For all practical purposes, yes, I am confident.

    3. At least three completely different businesses models embraced including SEO, email marketing and becoming a professional writer...I'd say embracing change is no problem

    4. Creating a business and sticking with it PERIOD is a risk. You're risking financial stability (a job) for a big payout in business. Sticking to the business world at all is a risk. Entrepreneur beware lol

    5. Raising the bar...I mean you have to! There's no other way to go unless you want to be content and complacent, which some business owners are, but evolution occurs when you're so uncomfortable it almost, and in many cases does severely, hurt.

*6. You have to innovate. You're in business, and therefore you as a mentally strong person, aren't going to truly grow unless you innovate in your industry. Innovation is what takes a startup to the next level, and only special types of people can really do that.

*7. Stays strong even when things get hellishly rough. I speak from experience and from hearing others go through horrifying experiences yet somehow stay together. Ridiculously amazing. The grit and resilience some people have to get through absolute HELL and come back to tell the tale.

In brief, to be a true businessmen has all these qualities plus more. You can't quantify the struggle to go from piece of coal to diamond. So many want to be the diamond but so few are willing to get cut. That's just how it is. And to be fair this doesn't just apply to business people; it applies to any mentally agile and reliant people who are willing to go through the wringer to get what they want no matter what.

    Thanks for the input heavysm,

I really like those 2 extra points at the end there. You've got to have the drive to push through the tough times.

I agree that being a true business man is more than this. But I was just thinking about what core traits are integral to being a successful entrepreneur, and (as you pointed out) successful person in general. You've just got to put in the sheer effort and determination. .

    Cheers, Zach.

    Hey PennyBurgess,

Here is a really nice article about seeing change as an opportunity, rather than a loss. It also leads to how embracing change is actually raising the bar for ourselves as we move out of our comfort zones.
