The Fastest Way From A to B

I'm a self-development junkie.

I don't see this as a bad thing. I'm not trying to prepare for something. I simply enjoy studying.

When it comes to self-help, even here on WF, there are many "keys to success". Some say to attract money. Others say to work 80 hours a week (I've been one of them and I see the merit in this). Others say to create systems and to optimize them.

However, today I've understood something critical.

I'm 200 meters from a beautiful beach, at the Black Sea. So while I was taking one of my evening walks (and freezing), I was looking at what is around me. I was looking at the contrast, expensive houses on one side, untouched nature on the other.

And then it hit me. To be successful you need to be willing to do whatever is required to do. You can't make circumstances easier. You can only become better.

You need to be willing to do what you fear.

If you want to sell your services, you need to get dressed in a suit and start visiting businesses in your area. Yes, it is hard and it makes you throw up. And yes, some people will reject you. Actually most of them. But this is what is required.

There is no easy way in life. You can run in circles all you want looking for the easy, painless and efficient method. In most cases, there isn't any. The secret to success is not always to work hard. Or even to work smart. It is about being willing to do what you need to do (and what other people are not willing to do).

I have a mentee who got into the service providing business. Most folks in his case would hit Elance or oDesk. He doesn't. He offers a 30 minute business analysis in person, at the client's business. He goes to conferences and events. He networks. He took the "hard way" that in the end, is the easy way. One hour doing this (actually going and meeting people in person) is worth more financially than ten hours trying to do it online.

When it comes to generating traffic to his business, he just uses what works. Instead of trying to get free traffic, spending days for little ROI he just used his earnings to bring more traffic. And this traffic brought him more money.

He doesn't work more than you and me. He just does what must be done, even if it riskier or even if it makes him feel uncomfortable. And for this reason alone, he'll soon have better results than I have. He's doing what I'm not (yet) willing to do.

Many years ago, a decade ago actually, I was in the entire "pick women" thing. I've studied and studied and studied. I knew 100 ways to do it. And yet, there were others that instead reading book after book, simply went and said hi. Some rejected them. Others said hi.

Even if 1 in 10 worked, it was far, far more efficient than my approach. And so it is with online businesses, especially when you're in the offline niche. It comes down to picking up the phone and calling. You call 50 people. 49 will say "go f*ck yourself". One will say yes and bring you $5000.

The easy way is the hard way to do. It is easy because it is fast and takes little effort. It is hard because it is way outside of your comfort zone, no matter where you are. For a guy it may be calling a small business owner. For another it may be calling and getting an appointment with Donald Trump.

But the easiest way from A to B also tends to be the most direct. And this is what we fear most.
