How NOT to be Paralyzed by Fear

I heard Robin Sharma say in one of his videos, "If you're not scared, your dreams are not big enough." But fear can paralyze you. Sometimes, you tend to do a lot of stupid things when you're afraid.

Yesterday, I received an email from a self-help guru (sorry, his name escapes my memory). It said that it is possible to turn fear into excitement, because both emotions give you the same sensations.

For instance, you're about to start a WSO. For a newbie, it can be scary. (Well, it was scary for me, at least.) Thoughts like, "What if nobody likes my product?" and "What if it gets severely criticized?" might invade your consciousness. But there's also the possibility that it becomes successful and you make a lot of money out of it.

To reframe your experience, you must focus on what you want to happen instead of what you don't want to happen. So instead of asking "What if it doesn't succeed?", think "What if it is wildly successful and I make a lot of money?"

Now, your WSO may not turn out to be as successful as you hoped it would be, but at least you spared yourself from the torment of being afraid of something that isn't even real. Instead of being paralyzed by fear, you are energized by excitement!

I'd love to hear what you have to say about this. Have you tried reframing the experience of fear into excitement?

It's what excitement that counts, well said.

Embracing the unknown makes me feel alive.

I'm stoked to see what's around the corner, or what I can pull off next.

There was a long time the fear kept me locked in place in every aspect of my life.

I came to the same conclusion. Either love living in fear, or buck up, embrace the unknown and push headlong into it.

The two outcomes are dramatically different.

Even if you do get criticized, the people either aren't your customers, are giving you tough love (whether either of you realize it) or are just negative people to begin with, and you don't want to work with them regardless.

Have a plan, but hit it with reckless abandon -- just get it.
