What is Elon Musk's Reason for success?

He took a lot of risk.

Far more than it is required.

After he sold his company paypal, he has 300 millions! instead of calling it quits, he went to to risk everything to build, space x and solar city.

He almost lost everything. Had the last rocket not launch properly, you would not have heard of elon musk anymore...

  • What is his estimated probability of success? Probably only 10%. Yet he took the risk.

    Lets go for it guys!

Oops I thought he lost it all never having a chance to earn it back. Just went through his biography, very impressive to say the least.

Some risks are really worth taking.

Who knows it could be the start of something new and amazing adventure of your life.

Courage is everything. Be willing to take risks even once in a while.

I have to disagree with everyone here. Elon Musk is an entrepreneur, a leader, and visionary. If things had gone badly for him, I have no doubts he would be back in a similar situation again in a few years.

The man isn't concerned with making money. He is concerned with changing the world and improving the lives of millions. Those values are the necessary ones to make a great deal of money. Not to mention, he has a lot more contacts now which would make it easier for him.

Elon Musk took the risk because, in his mind, changing the future was more important than the chance he might lose a mere 300 million. Elon is leaving a legacy, shaping the future, and that cannot be bought by money.

    Thanks for this interesting topic!
I'm agree with the opinion of scott m harvey, because the result is not only on the present but in the long term: and finally the picture of risk is small. Steve Jobs have taken risk to create Apple, Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook or Abraham Lincoln to abolish the slavery...
It's the same for us, we take all the risk everyday just only to go out. Is it the reason to renounce because there is a risk?
    After it's about a choice ;-)

Elon is someone that I spend lots of time reading about. The guy has an insane work ethic and I think this is what we're missing. He works really hard.

To me I think an insane work ethic is the difference that sets certain people apart in this life. I think that even if he had fail that some way we still would have heard about him. A real entrepreneur is someone that finds a way even when to everybody else there seems to be none. This is how they work. They think about creative solutions to problems every single minute of the day.

This is what a successful business is built on. It is build on the foundation that you must solve a problem that people are having in a way they are willing to pay for.

Elon Musk sets specific, time bound, worthwhile goals, and then works like hell to achieve them.

Most people cannot be bothered with setting a specific time-bound goal, or working hard to achieve that goal. That is what makes Musk the exception to the rule. IMO.

  • I don't think he takes careless risks. I think Musk takes calculated risks. Yes, he lost millions but he also got a lot of free press, contacts, and connected with other people who are willing to take that risk with him.
