At what point did you realize you were successful?

I spent a long time in the corporate world, earning the dollars and climbing the ladder.

I was putting my heart and soul into making it to the top in order to finally become successful.

It was only when I burnt out and had to step away for the sake of my health that my priorities changed. My view of success changed.

I realized that living a stress-free, creative life surrounded by those who care about me was the definition of success. That money and a label didn't make me successful. And that I'd had it all along. I became successful when my mindset changed.

When did you realize that you were successful?

When I was old enough to walk and talk. I didn't know what at that stage but I knew it to be true.

Welcome to the club. I spent almost a decade as a white collar in sales. Instead of becoming filthy rich, I became filthy unhealthy. I have to deal with the high blood pressure issues on a daily basis. Yet, I'm lucky to be alive. Some of my more "successful" ended up in hospitals all over the world. Now, I write. This is something I've always wanted to do. And yes, I still dream about a success, just a different kind. A successful novel or a movie made based on my novel. I changed my priorities. Honestly, I think that the most important thing is to work on your success rather on someone else's. Your definition of success doesn't necessarily have to work for me and vice-versa. Right?

That's exactly right, I couldn't agree more! The definition of success is so interchangeable depending on your priorities at the phase of life that you're in.

I agree that a big problem is created when you end up living your life aligned with someone else's definition of success rather than your own...

No wonder, when we're under the constant bombardment of all those more or less subtle messages to comply with "success" criteria. Luckily, we live in the cyber-world where we can experience some true freedom of choice. Maybe, that's the right order of things. First comes freedom, then success, and finally the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment. I'm still stuck at the first base, lol. Cheers! N

Can't say I am yet. I'm relatively more successful than most others though since I eat three meals a day, have a computer and an internet connection, and somewhat financially free and self-employed.

I'm still making "Earn (target income I won't disclose)", "be wealthy enough to travel to the best places in the world", and "have great relationships" as part of my goals so I'll consider myself "successful" then. At least, until I move my goals further.

(Note: I believe there's a difference between "success" and "content." The former is ever changing, the latter is to be avoided.)

I don't think of success as a final destination; you can be successful and still have a long way to go in an area!

That’s an interesting question. I’ve never really thought of myself as being successful or unsuccessful. I have goals I want to attain and I have good days and bad days, but I’m happy most of the time because I’m surrounded by people who love me. And though I work more than I did when I was running in the corporate rat race, I know I’m doing it for me and the people I love, which makes it a win in my book.

So, if I look at it that way, I do think I’m successful. When did it hit me? Right now LOL

But there’s still a lot more I want to do and I certainly want to become even more successful

I agree that there are different levels of success which is part of achieving goals. I am a new business owner and believe myself to be successful now because I"m dong something I love and I'm making rent payments each week! When I have more money in the bank and can provide a better life for my family, I'll be even more successful; and so it continues.

I don't believe in failure, only opportunities for learning. So with that being the case, aren't we successful by default?

I too spent a lot of time working for corporate. Making less than half of what I was worth and being treated even worse.

I left corporate about 4 months ago and managed to increase my income by almost 4x since then.

I realized when I was successful when:

I was able to not only survive on my own income but have enough to hire people.

I was able to work 12-14 hour days without ever complaining.

I was able to start doing what I wanted to do, when I wanted to do it.

I also felt successful when I started gaining notoriety for my services and people would come to me saying "Hey I saw you on" or "I read your article on".

      Awesome Jarod!
You've done so well to achieve so much in just 4 months! I left corporate about 3 months ago and still working my way up to having a regular salary, and certainly nowhere near hiring people. However, I count myself as successful because what I do now for myself is so much more rewarding than working my butt off to make other people money; people who didn't appreciate it quite frankly. I also count myself as successful for having the guts to make the move in the first place, whatever the outcome. Not everybody does.

Congratulations on such a successful move, you'll have to let me know your secrets

        Thank you!

The secret is that you need to learn how to sell. It doesn't matter how great you are are in your field. If you can't sell then you'll never make it. It sounds harsh but it's easier than it sounds.

You can learn almost any skill just by Googling it and putting in the time to do extensive research. I had 0 experience as an SEO but (I don't recommend doing this) I sold myself as an expert to my first client. I was able to pass an email & skype interview. Not because I was an expert but because I knew how to Google things and knew how to sell.

While I don't like to talk money too much I will say that now I'm able to close on $5,000 a month leads not because I'm an expert (which I can truthfully say now - I have many years of experience as I did off & on freelance work when I was in corporate) but becuase I know how to close those deals.

Very inspiring, and such good results so soon! It's great that you're happy doing it too

I, like you, am also figuring it out as I go and Google, and forums such as this one, are proving to be wonderful tools for me as a beginner.

          Thanks again for the inspiration!

  • I realized I was successful when I could afford to spend more time at home than at work. I can be comfortable with what I'm making and still have enough left over for savings. My daughter is growing up with a full-time parent who can be there for every school event. That for me is the measure of sccuess.

        Hey bees,
Well, one day I stumbled on a Mega Hypnotist (Cosmic Master) who instrumentally taught me that *everything* is positive and we should strive to turn challenges into a magical carpet that will transition us from point A to Z.

Then I started probing more and more into the recordings that out of the blue turned me into a very optimistic person. As a byproduct I started automatically being wired for success. Became hooked ever since until this intel led me to some pretty awesome ideas or dare I say epiphanies.

You have to believe in the power of inner serenity and ultra positivity because you'll never run out of fuel on your quest to formulating the future. I also gained some abilities that never thought I would have.

Ever since I started witnessing a succession of wonders like I rubbed some genie of sorts. Magic things happen to those who live by of expecting amazing things and ultimately believe!

Just fabulous, Mike! It's great that you believe in the power of manifestation, and equally as great that your view of success is defined around this. I really enjoy hearing people's tales of higher faith and how they came to see a bigger picture, so thank you so much for sharing!

Success is determined by yourself. Not by others. For example: You can be a successful father but lousy son. A successful employee but lousy husband.

No one can define success accept yourself. To me to be successful you need to be all rounder. It's hard and only a few good man ever did it in history.

    Hey Mike
Sounds like you are working with the Law of Attraction. I used the law to quit the city and work from home. I also used it to make myself financially independent.
However the law can work in strange ways. A heart attack helped me quit the city and a major gut operation helped me become financially independent!

I realized I was successful a few months ago. The past few years I've put off starting a family, taking my relationship to the next level all because I wanted to pursue financial freedom instead. I was focusing on generating as much income as I could before doing any of those things.

It wasn't until two months ago that I talked to someone who opened my eyes to the world and what life is really about. Success to many is defined as having financial freedom, buying whatever you want, and doing whatever you want at any time that you please. As I was talking to him , he asked me what the end goal of making as much money as I can would do for me.

Aside from telling him that I wanted to retire early and live a happy life, he totally floored me with saying - "many people focus too much on money and making a living, but at the same time they forget to live."

That really opened my eyes to what I had and how much more fortunate I was than many of the people I know. I have friends who are supportive of what I do, a girlfriend who supports me when I work hours and hours on end, a family who is in great health and that I'm super close with. That day my definition of success totally changed. It's more than money now, it's the wealth that you get by being surrounded by amazing people, having money to do things you want to do without being too extravagant, and just living life the way you want.

If you've struggled for success for years and don't feel like you're going anywhere, take a step back and look around you, maybe you'll redefine the meaning like I have.

    cheers.

I really enjoyed reading this response and agree wholeheartedly. Often, it's not our situation that needs to change in order for us to become successful, it's our outlook on the situation. While financial freedom is a lovely addition, it is love and health that really define success for me, and for you too obviously.

I often find that when you keep relationships at bay because you have other goals to meet, you're actually hindering your chances of reaching them anyway. Teamwork makes reaching goals much easier.

I also find that the more you earn, the higher your cost of living becomes - so having the six-figure salary might seem like an attractive package, but does it every really equate to 'financial freedom'

Thanks again for your response, and good luck for the future
