Pride is one thing that makes a person alive. What I mean is that there are certain aspects in our lives that we need a sense of pride in it. So, what do you think is the importance of having pride?

Pride is not the same as confidence/self-esteem. But anyway, be careful. Because pride (as in the lack of humility) leads to destruction (or failure) while humility comes before honor (or good success)

I like what Jane Austen said:
"Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously.
A person may be proud without being vain.
Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us."

The distinction between pride and vanity in mark z's post is a good one.
Also, pride has various shades of meaning - e.g. 'I'm proud of my children' is very different from 'I take a pride in my appearance' - the first is virtually automatic and effortless for most parents but the second implies effort, skill and probably money.
The opposite of pride is shame. Many peole who would say they were proud of something they had done would probably be less forthcoming on things they were ashamed of which leads me to believe that pride is considered to be a very positive thing - at least for some people - you could almost say they are proud of being proud.

Pride is also the root of cultural prejudice - leading to nationalism,
    oppression, and war.

Because Hitler made the German people proud of their supposed
racial superiority, he was able to persecute other groups.

This sort of pride is dangerous - creating us vs. them thinking,
causing turf wars among inner city gangs and the religio-cultural
wars in many parts of the world. Do you think terrorists
murder because they are ashamed of their heritage? No.
They do it out of warped sense of pride.

Pride in one's children? sure. Pride in doing one's work well?
sure - but perhaps "satisfaction" would be a better word
    for these feelings.

I'm not just pulling this stuff out of my ear - it's rooted
    in Vedantic philosophy and yoga.

It's important to have pride in your accomplishments, but to never be satisfied. I am always on to the next thing using my success in one area to fuel my success in another.

I heard a story from John Maxwell and I think it is relevant. It is where there is this rich business man who has a picture of a turtle on a fence next to his desk. Whenever anyone asks him what is the meaning of that picture he says that a turtle can never get onto a fence without help so no matter how rich and successful a businessman I am, just like the turtle I did not make it here on my own.

So whether you call it pride or confidence or self esteem etc, just remember that you did not reach on top of the mountain on your own, and never ever forget to acknowledge those who helped you to reach on top of the fence!!!

So have some pride, have some self esteem but don't ever let it replace humility because EGO stands for Edging God Out!!!

There's this best-selling book of all time that says something akin to "Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall."

True CSI people say that the reason a serial killer is finally captured is because he/she gets careless because... they get cocky and think they can outsmart everyone.

Although not a serial killer (that I know of), this is exactly what happened to my ex-husband and why he's sitting in prison.

Pride is very important but you should not have too much ego because it results to a lot of disagreements. You can always use pride in a positive way, like motivating yourself to do better in whatever craft you are engaged in.

Pride might be the beginning of downfall of many ..... sometimes its easier to handle failure compared to success

Well, think about it. No one has truly succeeded, unless he/she has failed before.

      Example: Thomas Edison

Actually, whenever he failed, he simply said,
      "I've found 1000 ways that don't work".

    My favorite quote about pride:
"A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you're looking down, you can't see something that's above you." -from Pride Quotes | Sayings on Pride | Famous Sayings and Quotes

I think that pride is attributed in some degree to confidence and that to not have pride affects your level of confidence too.

I don't feel like getting all philisophical right now but

some of you are confusing pride with arrogance.

Pride is a virtue. Arrogance should be avoided
      at all costs.

Humility, the way most of us are taught it, is an old, tired concept.

Try being humble in the face of a viscious aggressor and see
      what it gets you.

On the other hand, humility does has its place.

      It would be wise to be humble in the prescence of a superior;
someone or something more powerful or wiser than you; or
when trying to learn something new.

Sometimes resistance is the worst method to use and a humble
      approach is best.

This is not the meek, weak and rigid humility that we are programmed
with throughout life but a bold and fearless kind that empowers you
to push your fears to the side; not giving a damn what others think, and
aligning yourself with the higher powers of the universe.

So, yes, pride, and not arrogance can be good.

Humility can be a source of power; if you look deeper into it
      and understand its true meaning.
