Remember: the 80/20 Rule applies to your THOUGHTS as well

You know the 80/20 Rule, right?

Also known as the PARETO PRINCIPLE, this RULE states that 80% of your results are produced by only 20% of your activities

The goal is to expand that 20% so you can ACHIEVE more.

Usually, people apply the PRINCIPLE to ACTIONS but it also applies to your thoughts

20% of your thoughts produce 80% of the emotional states that drive you to greater action and success

Isn't it time to expand that 20%?

Indeed, by paring away at the 80%! You're right, paring away the thoughts you don't want will open you to achieving the balance of thoughts you're in search of. Good insight. Thanks.

The key, of course, is to be CLEAR about the thoughts that push you toward the right direction and those that pull you back or don't do you much good.

A little clarity goes a long way

I very interesting this rule. I have to take the more time to research, to think out the best way (20%) to achieve the highest efficiency (80%). Not tired, more effective.

Practicing mindfulness/meditation helps people TRACK their thoughts from thought to judgment to emotional state to action

My experience with mindfulness led me to the realization that only 20% of my thoughts actually account for most of my USEFUL / POSITIVE actions in any given day.

The rest is just 'noise' or worse yet, negative mental habits.

well cleaning up patterns of thought vomit is helpful ..but i found thought are never really your thoughts they just kind of pass through your brain .. so it help to tune your mind to receive better thoughts and develop more useful thought patterns

I understand what you are saying but I would remove the "emotional" aspect. In my experience emotions get in the way - rather than lead to accomplishments.

Perhaps 20% of my thinking that is rational, realistic, imaginative, focused is responsible for much of the 80% of good/workable ideas. The time spent on 'emotion' - joy, anger, fear, fright, worry/stress make me more tired and less productive. Back to the "clarity" you mentioned - I agree there.

  • I expand my 20% by making the effort to learn something new everyday. Any new skill or knowledge that can help me with my work makes me better and more efficient.
