We Can Not Make Them Longer, So lets Make Them Better

We Cant Make Them Longer, So Lets Make Them Better

I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better.

-Henry David Thoreau

The above quote is one of the reasons why I personally like to use quotes as a way of motivating myself. In one sentence Thoreau sums up about 20 years of my life trying to figure out how to squeeze more into my days when I should have been focused on accomplishing more of the important things than just worrying about production and volume.

To be fair to myself, I was close. I have always advocated that what was irrefutable to achieving ones happiness was the skill, ability and the discipline required to achieve ones personal key priorities on a regular basis. I had the intent, what I did not have was Thoreaus ability to succinctly wrap it up in a single, beautiful sentence.

So, we all are in agreement that it makes zero sense to try to cram everything into one single day and we are also all in agreement that we can not make more time? So we are left to follow Thoreaus advice and concentrate on making every day as productive as possible.

Somewhere, some time, even for a few moments, there has to be something that you do each day that lifts your spirit, that makes you smile, that gives you a small moment of respite.

Put something into your day, or take something out. These procedures ensure that you are looking at what you are planning to do in an organized fashion and giving you the best chance of making each day the best it could possibly be.

Every day that you are the driver and not the passenger will be a good day.
Make technology work for you, not the other way around, this means having more times in the day when you are off the grid than on it.

Every day there is THE task; your KEY A Priority. Achieve this task and your day is almost guaranteed to be chalked up as a success. Fail to realize this priority and regardless of what else gets accomplished that day, you will not be a happy camper.
If you continue to perform the same way you did yesterday today, you are going to get the same results as yesterday.

To make today better, did you change how you acted today?
Never underestimate small gradual incremental changes; these are the kind of long term operational changes that make each day better, leading to weekly, monthly and yearly improvements.

Bad habits equal bad results. Most of our disappointments can be traced back to a relatively small number of habits we have gotten into that are not giving us the results we want. POP offers new habits that will replace the old habits that are not serving you well.
Better is a relative term.

My hope with this post is to provide you with the tools to improve enrich and elevate your life experience REGARDLESS of where you are in your life in terms of happiness and satisfaction.

The terms empower, enrich and improve your life are not meant to be a comment on who or where you are in your individual life journey. Some people have inadvertently taken those words as me making some sort of personal judgment about YOU!!!
On a number of levels that is pretty bizarre, particularly since we have never met.

To be fair, sometimes even I am a bit uncomfortable with what could be construed as me lecturing other people on what they and their lives should consist of. There is a line that separates me appearing to have all of the answers and offering up what I have personally seen over the years as tools, systems ideas that have benefited other people who have used these ways and means to improve their lives.

One Last Thought (for now)

If I was to teach you how to bake an apple pie, after a few tries you would be able to bake an apple pie on demand. If I was to call you up in a month and ask you to bake me an apple pie, you would be able to do it without a problem.

Not so with learning to run our lives as best as we can .

There are no specific steps that will work for any of us, no recipe for success that works everyday. On top of this, even if there were a recipe for success, the catch is, we would need to be able to control our selves enough on a daily basis to be able to use it.

Thats the rub; it would not be enough to have that secret formula, we would need to be able to everyday make sure we would use it.

Have an incredible day, remember, we can not make our days longer, so lets make them the best we can, have fun, enjoy.

Bryan

there are people who make a lot more money than you and it's not about personal production..is about doing the most valueable thing and putting together the production from many areas

to run his high end island home/resort how much time does richard branson put into preparing the food or fixing the beds or cleaning the rooms ,,

hell i think he runs his other businesses then parties with the guests .

warren buffet buy a big chunk of the companies he invests in then uses his system to train and work with the management of the company .

now you want to make your days better get better at piecing together more valuable products pieced together from other high value sources .

i am not saying get the book because i have yet to.. but tools of titans from tim ferris .. which is the result of compiling performance tip from the highest performers in the world.

what if you wanted to make 20 times more income in the next 2 years .. but had to do it in 3 hours or less a day ..

Great post. Once I realized this my ability to create what I wanted in life increased significantly. I stopped focusing on doing a bunch of stuff, but instead I focused on doing the most important stuff even if it seemed like I was doing less.

Why work hard when you can work smart (assuming you had to choose one). And the way I see it, if I'm going to work hard I might as well work smart too. Why settle for one when I can do both.

but not enough will always be not enough .. one bite of the best tasting food a sip of the highest quality wine the best sheet in twin size .. when you have a king size bed .. or a great pair of shoes 2 sizes too small .

not enough is not enough ..work with time as well.and sleep. you can get high quality sleep 2-3 hours a night . but if you are only getting that it impacts the quality of everything else you do .i need my 6 hours of sleep to be highly functional..

quality time is bullshit the same as work life balance is bull shit .. so be careful of the crap lines that are cop outs from type a workaholics building careers and ignoring their families .

work life integration and get the highest quality in the quantity you need .

perfectly fine if you settle for work life balance and a little taste of the best life has to offer

the work you do on a daily basis is a big part of how you bring value to the world and give meaning to your life ..

if you want the best life you can have and the best days you can have ..you live your life play your play and work your work at the same time .. not work over her for most of the day live a few hours at night or before work..and play on days you don't have to work .

to many people crave success but see work as a dirty word . or find the concept of work you can enjoy as mythical..reserved for special people .

You have zero chance of enjoying what you refer to as the best in life, if you do have a firm handle on work, life balance.
What ever term you aitch to work, you still need to put that concept into its proper order, when you consider what you want to do when you are not working.

of course there is stuff you do when you are not working . that has nothing to do with either work life balance or work life integration.

work life balance is generally something you worry about if you have a job or you have created your job and you seal yourself away from the rest of your life in order to earn the money ..so your lifestyle is mostly separated from what you do for work .

work life integration is far different because you are not doing stuff for work you have to do to get money and living your life when you are not working. the work you do is stuff you get to do that makes you enough money to live the lifestyle you want . while making money from that lifestyle .

because right now i am in the work life integration thing and paying my rent and filling myy belly doing work i enjoy even doing it when i am in phisical pain and have absolutly no motivation to be out doing it. only for the share fact i am bored as hell when not doing it ..

when your work is your play and your main entertainment. i have taken 1 full day off sence april of last year .. monday this week i woke up sick and injured becuse i fell on the way home from work..i should have ended up in the hospiral..

when not working i am studying the next things i want to do as a way to earn money ..the next stage of my work life integration .. my body doesn't like the 10-14 hour days i put in a few times a week ..

I used to think of "work life balance" the goal. Now I want to find the type of work that aligns with my own interests and passions that it loses it's feeling of "work" to begin with. This way, grinding on a Gary Vee level, no longer seems impossible because it's just doing what's fun and rewarding. Then you can say gtfo to work-life-balance stuff.

Great post! I use to be one of those people who use to just try to cram cram cram all that needed to be done in one day but you do truly burn yourself out. I honestly don't know where I've obtained that habit from...probably high school cause I always did my work at the last second before class started. I have though successfully trained myself to realize there are 6 other days in a week so its more feasible to take one day at a time literally haha

So true. If you look at each day as its own mini-mission and not something that should take you all the way to the finish line, it seems to work out better long term. I used to make huge lists of ALLLLL the things I needed to accomplish and it became discouraging to ever start lol

      • Profile picture of the author BBryanB
I think making a list of all you want to do is a great start to actually getting some of the priorities on your list done.
If you get discouraged, that is the time to start culling your list to the point where you can actually accomplish what is on that list.
You To Do List, should not turn into a wish list !!

Yes, you work for a better life, but life gets in the way.

Or to put it another way if you have children, (especially young) then success unless it is your daily business will probably take 20 years to pull off instead of one person, with no attachments doing it in 5.

Living in a cave, as long as it is not too long, is fine as long as you get to the end of the rainbow at the end.

Is it worth risking your employability, having little to no friends, little funds, and your wife telling you that you are insane for 5 years and end up rich at the end.

I would say YES to that.
