Surviving Your Hell Weeks

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share with you some thoughts about getting things done and accomplishing the most challenging projects in one's life.

Five years ago I read a book by Eric Greitens called "The Heart and the Fist" about a Navy Seal. One of the stories has particularly stuck with me since then. I've decided to post it because it inspired me to persist through situations I thought I would've never managed to, or accomplish goals I thought were beyond my abilities. If my post inspires just one person to try harder making it through whatever struggle he or she is challenged with - it will make my day.

So, here it is:

"
Who doesnt make through Hell Week?
1. The weight lifting meat heads, who think that the size of their biceps is an indication of their strength - They usually fail
2. The kids covered in tattoos, announcing to the world how tough they are - They usually fail
3. The priding leaders, who don't want to be dirty - They usually fail
4. The Me first, look at me, I'm the best former athletes, who've always been told that they are stars and think that they can master BUDs, like they mastered their high school football try outs - They usually fail
5. The blowhards who have thousands of stories what they are going to do, but a thin record of what they've actually done - They usually fail
6. The men who make excuses - They usually fail
7. The whiners, that This is not fair, guys, the self-pitting cryers
- They usually fail
8. The talkers, who have always looked good or sounded good, rather than actually been good - They usually fail

In short, all of the men, who focused on show - FAILED.
The vicious beauty of BUDs is that there are
NO EXCUSES, NO EXPLANATIONS.
You do or do not.
Some people, who seemed impossibly week at the beginning of BUDs, men who puked on the runs and had trouble with pull- ups - MADE IT
Some men, who were skinny and short, and whos teeth shattered looking at the ocean - MADE IT
Some men, who were visibly afraid, to the point of shaking -
MADE IT "

Love it thanks for sharing, this week I am that person you're looking to inspire to keep pushing through. thanks.

I often remember the saying, if it's not hard, if you're not scared, if what you're doing isn't requiring absolutely every ounce you've got, then you probably are doing something wrong. It's supposed to be hard.

Really appreciate you sharing this because it reminds me that if you're failing and you adjust and you're still trying, then you're getting closer, not further. Thanks Timothy.

Thanks for your reply. Great to hear that you found it useful. A businessman once told me "If you want to get rich and do whatever you wish, you have to go hungry first." Sounds harsh, but the reality isn't really far from that. It pays to be a winner.

I read it is as "never give up and keep focused". Not always easy but the only option for success - and worth it. Thank you.

I agree. Persistence in the right direction always pays back. Most of the greatest things in life never come easy.

Ha, this made me think of Captain America. How he was scrawny and weak but covered that grenade to save others. Showed heart and made the cut!

Yup. I guess everyone has something inside of them that lights up sooner or later. And how amazing it is to watch when those weak and shy suddenly rise up and shine in their own areas of excellence and strength.

Psychology plays a big part - that and having perspective and common sense!

Totally agree - persistence + perseverance = grit. Much like the quote from Robert Schuller, "Tough times never last, but tough people do."

    Great story, thanks for sharing!

I think a great way to make it through your "hell week" is to look at the long-term goal and objective, and not to get overwhelmed by immediate obstacles.

Without a set goal in mind, you will never be able to make it through hardships.

I'd say both short-term and long-term goals are equally needed. Short-term goals let you reward yourself faster. Long-term goals help, as you said, not to get overwhelmed by obstacles.

And I agree. If you don't have a goal, you won't get anywhere. Goals create wants, desires, and motivation.

Hello! I have not read this book but I love reading self improvement books. I know I will make excuses on a lot of things that I need to get done. But one thing thing I have learned is that life is not going to wait for me I have to go get what I want. It may not come to me when I want it but it will come if I keep at it. Thank you, I will have to read that book.

Hi, thanks for your reply. This isn't a self-improvement book, but I am sure you will find something useful there. I recommend listening to the audiobook. It's narrated by its author. Good luck!

Thanks for posting, I believe to get through anything in life you need a very strong discipline so you don't fail when things get hard and can actually back up, what they say.

Correct. It's pretty much all about discipline, hard work and focus.

I appreciate this post. Reaching goals in life may not be easy but one can make it more fun, enjoyable and achievable. One approach to reaching a long-term goal is to set smaller short-term goals that will help one achieve the long-term goal. Before you know it you've succeeded. Afterwards rinse and repeat. Failure is not an option. Thanks for sharing.

    Great post. Thanks timexer.
    : )

    A couple of quotations/knowledge
that helped me when I was having
    "Hell weeks" (etc.) is:

    "If you're going through Hell,
    keep going." - Winston Churchill

"Whatever happens. I'll handle it." -
Susan Jeffers ("Feel The Fear And
    Do it Anyway.")

    "This too shall pass." -
    English-language adage
