Would you rather be rich or happy?

hello all

last night while i was working i was chatting with someone a few years older than me who has no money now but had money in the past enough to be rich for a while . now he is in vegas about to be homeless yada yada .. lots of those stories here .

the major bias i have built up over the last year is to limit the number of poor people who get close to me ..or people who have given up and pretty much expect to be poor the rest of their lives .. don't take care of themselves and always have i list of things they really should do but never do. ..and will suck resourse from family friends and government..they will come into your place and grab a drink something to eat .. little things ..

poor people who tell you they are poor and tell you why they are poor will always be poor ..

then there are people who are broke no matter how much money they make they just never have cash on hand .. i am in this stage i have enough to put a roof over my head and buy food and beer ..and pay for internet .. but listening to grant cardone he purposly keeps himself broke despite making what he make .. he gets a huge chunk of money it goes in the bank untill he can invest it in something . so he is broke but wealthy .

rich is up to you .. my definition of wealthy is you have assets that prodce income to support the lifestyle you want ..

now back to the post title the question. would you rather be rich or happy .. i personally argued with him .. that it was not a valid question . if you believe it is an or question.. you have deep seated biases ..it's like beliving there is a choice.. to i do good work that helps people or do i get rich ..

being rich or happy ..if you ask or answer it ..you need to work on your beliefs ..

they are not exclusive ask how can you be happy and get rich .. and how can you do work that really helps people and make good chunks of money

Rich and happy do not have to be exclusive - but at times they are.

I would always choose happiness - except there's not really a choice to be made. If I am happy, I have enough. If I'm not happy, there is never enough.

it really boils down to how you define rich..if it is a dollar figure and you keep moving that figure higher as you get closer..you may never feel rich and probably will not be happy.

i know how to do things that make me happy and i am selfish enough not to think of thing to make me unhappy .. so many people when they start feeling good willturn on the news or search on line for something to put them back in a bad mood ..

to many people have a religious need for personal suffering and as the get more money they also find more thing to be guilty about ..that they might not admit to others ..

i have a global consiousness.. so considering even though by USA standards i am poor by the standard of 90 percent of the human beings on this planet i am rich ..

growing up my parent told me to eat verything on my plate because children in china where starving ..7 years ago i was fat my back was badly injured i couldn't get out of be .. and all the jobs i could do where being sent over to those starving kids .

i make money without having to punch a clock chose when to work and i have lost much weight and my back is much better.. i know how to be happy and know how to build wealth or get rich .. and stay happy.. would i sacrifice happyness to get rich .. no.. i can get happy and be rich..

      I am selfish that way

I couldn't agree with you more. Perspective is huge and so many just don't have it and that kills you. Humans tend to think in scales of absolutes, and not relatives.

The definition of poor in some countries, like the US, is the definition of total wealth in other countries. perspective is everything.

Running water and a flushing toilet is an incredible luxury to many in the world, I am by no means complacent I am very ambitious but perspective.... Perspective breeds gratitude which then breeds an excellent state of mind to execute and go for more.

At least this has been my experience, and it's worked well for me

I would rather be happy. Many people want to be rich as a method to happiness so why not just go straight to happiness?

This is exactly how I feel.

The reason people want money is so they can afford the things that they feel will make them happy.

I've heard several people say that they've traveled all over the world and the happiest people they met had next to nothing. (material wise)

And we've all heard about people with lots of money becoming depressed and killing themselves. Even with all that money they felt life was not worth living.

If you are rich in happiness and actually enjoy living your life, that's priceless.

      But...
Even though money doesn't buy happiness or make life worth living, it certainly can make it easier in many areas!

      Sooooo... I'll take both please!

the key to that kind of happiness that those with next to nothing have .. is they don't let the things they don't have make them unhappy ..as long as they have a place to sleep clean water to drink..food to cook and a way to cook the food .

i kind of need air conditioning , a lap top and good quality internet haha ...

but befriend a few dozen of these impoverished but happy people ..and you realize many are in between some desperate family emergency ..so of course if everyone is healthy today they are happy ..

    Yes, not the best question.

I have had little money for most of my life, and will become rich in the next 5 years.

Does that change me or make me an ars****e, not really.

if anything that will give me the money to do a few things, that the arse***e try to keep a lid on, and cause considerable suffering as a result.

But will l be happier with a few milion, probably, at least it means that in the dead of winter, l can go on a short holiday for a week, to a warm, tropical location.

I am pretty sure that sitting on a chair on my balcony, hearing the waves crashing on the shore, on a warm, tropical night, while sipping a cocktail, knowing that the 3 or 4k, that l spent on this 5 star romp, is being replaced and my bank balance will show little to no difference when l return, will probably make me pretty happy.

You want to distance yourself from poor people in order to help people?

and in the Usa civil asset forfeiture or theft by the police amounts to like 20 times the amount of cash value real thieves take

and mutual funds hidden fees that cost you lots of money over time pretty much amounts to theft ..

how god dam long was i supposed to make the post to explain all the different ways different classes of people could steal from you was i supposed to write a book .

when you are broke and starting out there are people you need to watch out for..if you see yourself as poor there are bad thinking habits you need to identify and change ..

as you build wealth of course there will be many different types of other humans trying to get your money

Hi Yukon....actually I completely agree with Odahh. You can't help poor people by becoming one of them. You also can't help poor people by hanging around listening to their excuses why they aren't going to make it past where they are now. In fact, if you did, their negativity and excuses might rub off on you - and cause you to slow down and not pursue all that you can.

It actually goes way deeper than that...and it does take a paradigm shift to really get this idea. It sounds rude and uncaring -- but it's really the complete opposite. The more you can build yourself up, the more you are able to help others. And you can't do that if you're hanging around people who are telling you that you're wasting your time and why it will never work.

i agree with you and thank you..

i do have to amend what i said..there are people in poverty ..who are considered poor but will work their butts of given the chance to make their lives better ..and take big risks to get those chance..

then there are people who have given up and will support themselves by leaching off who ever they can without providing any real value ..

you can do real well with the first group.. the second group will slow you down..or kill you

if you own a business 85 percent of theft based losses will be from employees ..then most lawsuits will be from employees ..so why are most business in the USA employing as much tech to shrink the number of employees they need ..

but living in las Vegas i have heard so many stories of homeless getting all their crap stolen while they where asleep.. by people who themselves where homeless or just a bit above ..you just have to learn who the human parasites are ..and how they are trying to suck blood from you

i don't mean to sound critical but instead of the 5 star hotel thing .. in most tropical countries you can rent a nice furnished home for about 1 k a month and pay a maid or a gardener about 300-400 bucks a month each and a chef like 30 bucks a day to buy and cook all your food ..

so yeah if you want to live like a very rich person you can do it for 3-4 k a month in a tropical country .. and you can have a fairly luxurious life for 2 k a month .

and you can get your self a gold digging 20 something year old girlfriend who can look like a fashion model .. but you have to grasp that you will not just be supporting her ..but her mom and dad and brothers and sister ..

I believe that, you don't have to choose money or happiness, you can have it all at the same time. i'll rather have it all.

In most cases when people are not happy, is because of they dont have money to do something, and at the other hand most of those who has money they are happy.

Lets be real, if your child is diagnosed with cancer and she need to be operated by specialist doctors, and you are broke, how are you gonna fee when you are poor?
Of cause you will feel like hell.

But is you have money to pay for that operation, Yes you will fell bad but will pay for your kid to get help.
So you need both happiness and wealth.

I think I'd rather be rich man. There are a lot of things you can do with money. Being happy is temporary as being sad.

Money can't buy you happiness, but being broke can't buy you shit.

Give me the money and I'll figure out how to be happy afterwards.

      .
Other than just making me laugh my butt off... This one sentence rings so true!

I've been broke, and I've been rich... Rich is better.

When I spent sleepless nights wondering how I would keep a roof over my family's head, and food on the table, I wasn't happy at all.

But with all the bills paid, money in the bank, and my kids tucked safely in bed with full bellies... I am a happy man.

Plus, when I was broke and saw a worthy cause that needed funding, I was not happy being unable to help. By contrast, being able to help others does make me feel happier.

good additions to the thread ..

the root of most people money problems at least in the modern western world ..is that people are trying to get rich for the wrong reason..money is as important in modern life as food water air and shelter.. because the money you have dictates the quality .

Where the big flaw is in the money game is .. that many people have this preconceived idea that at some point in the future they will not be able to physically work and earn any more money ..so they are trying to pile it up and earn a lot more than they really need now..before they stop working .

Then you add so much of a persons identity is tied to what they do to earn money ..and once you stop working their is a big loss ..you also need a way to be productive or feel productive to maintain mental health and be happy ..

i see many people who make big chunks of money and then develop bad habits trying to do thing to make themselves happy especially when they are not working any more ..

find work that makes you happy enough that you will want to do it 10 12 14 16 hourse a day ..and chances are you will eventually get rich and or build wealthy.. but you will not stop working at those points ..

You can always be happy (no matter what you're going through) because happiness is a choice. (A state of mind.)

So why not be happy and rich? (IMO the "Rich Vs. Happy" proposition is something that "poor" people like to say/believe.)

However the two don't have to be mutually exclusive. In fact they work together. Personally I think what a person does with their money can make them happy. For instance it would bring a great smile to my face to help my Dad (especially) with his bills/mortgage and retirement etc.

here is the major problem ..the idea of what rich is is a moving target ..with so many people with wealth ..that it is real hard to be rich .. if you only have a million dollars today.. many people trying to live a western world lifestyle would not feel rich ..and when they start letting the thing they still can't afford bother them it will cause missery and sometimes mental disorder ..

if you are trying to get rich but do not have a predetermined lifestyle you are after then you may fail to actually find happiness ..but is you understand the best lifestyle for you and build the income and wealth and time freedom to actually enjoy the lifestyle ..

the it will be easy to get rich and happy

the nature of the times we are entering .. help your parents if when they need it and secure the finances of you and your children..but as early as possible teach them the skills they need to become financially secure as early as possible ..and avoid piling up a huge amount of debt . the education system we have is going to collapse in the next 10-15 years as it is already obsolete and ineffective .

yes support you church or charities of your own choosing .. or even throw a good deal bigger tip wen you go out to eat ..as for your freinds .. if they are not on the path to financial security and learning what to do ..the most real help you can give is to be financially secure yourself and tell them what you are doing when they ask .

because if you where in financial hard time when you where learning to deal with the mental condition( i refuse to call it an illness) that you have talked about having before..and come from that to building wealth and financial security ..and stability and happiness ..people will really want to know how .

once i get through this rough patch i am in and get into my next business that i can do 1012 14 hours a day almost every day in my personal ideal conditions .. i will be having fun happy and building wealth in a few years when i build the lifestyle i want and have the wealth to support it .

you can chose to be happy ..but i know the living , dietary, environmental and sicial condition i need to be in to be happy very easily ..just need to find the woman once i am there ..who is happy in the same conditions and doen't do thing to f%^$ it up

        P.S.
Something I learned from Rick Warren ("The Purpose Driven Life") is that there are "wealth builders" and "kingdom builders." The latter are different in that they create/generate wealth so that they can share it and use it to help (and empower) other people.

The only reason any of us really care about being rich is for the happiness that it can buy. Money does buy happiness to a degree. Being rich might not necessarily buy any additional happiness though than just having your basic needs met. I think it might depend on the person. I think that anyone that says they'd rather be rich is really still choosing happiness, but they just feel that money will bring them happiness in a different way.

    Both. Definitely both.

Because money is just.....money. No big deal. Energetically you allow in money or repel money. Happiness is a choice too. Tough things may happen in your life. But outside of embracing these difficult moments and feeling reactive emotions - anger, rage - and then, gradually embracing grief and depression, and releasing these energies, you can be happy most of the time.

Both states are choices. Since we are blessed with the power of choice we can choose energetically to be rich and to be happy, no matter what outside conditions or appearances suggest.

Is it easy to be rich and happy? Yes if you were raised without money limiting beliefs, and if you were raised in a loving, caring, generous environment at home. No if you were raised in a home swimming with money limiting beliefs, and in a place where happiness seemed like an alien concept.

Yep; most humans are raised with a slew of crappy beliefs around money. So we have been in a spot like the person noted in the post. Or most of us have been. Sucks, but it is only hard to make money when you resist the fear associated with facing your fear of going broke, and feeling that fear.

It does get easier and easier to make money when you dive right into your money-related fears and do the things one does to allow money into your experience. So yeah, you can have money by being this type of person and you can definitely be happy by choosing to be happy, to spread love, to have fun and to help people.

As for not surrounding yourself with scared folks, I do hear you. I cleaned shop a few times in my life. Mainly because I found myself vibing with the fears lobbed my way by scared folks, and figured, what am I learned from people who are living in a state of silent terror?

I also take the Jim Rohn quote to heart; your life will pretty be the lives of 5 folks you surround yourself with the most. So letting go the scared folks who will find their own way and connecting with prospering folks is definitely the way to go.

dont watch too many movies or read many stupid quotes about money and happiness, reality is if you have money you can buy and spend on stuff that makes you happy, make people around you happy ,you can help more people which in turn makes you happy at least for me thats how i feel, makes your life much easier ,solves a lot of your problems.

prioritizing money does not mean you are ignoring everyone else and selling your soul to the devil. this is the real world dont be too naive

I would rather be rich. Being rich removes enough problems and stresses that I would find it hard to be unhappy

totally agree with you on beliefs. If there's one thing that's messed me up in the past it's beliefs. To answer your question I would rather be happy, but my version of happy does require some money. So they blend together a little bit for me

However, having your basics covered like food, bills, rent, etc can make people feel more rich than they think. It's a different world when you don't have to worry about those basics. That provides a totally different platform to which you can then improve upon.

Being happy is key, because then you're in the right state of mind to go after more. Having money but being unhappy doesn't produce the mindset needed to get more. Happiness to me is key. You cant execute from a bad state of mind.

money can't buy happiness ..but 95 percent of the thing i need to help me be happy ..have a price tag

as i tried to state ..the rich or happy question is not valid so there is no real answer .

Personally i have had to find my path to being happy without having money ..but i still have quite a bit of stress and annoyance ..i have mental conditions negative people call it illness . that i have had to figure out the proper condition i need to be in to be happy most of the time ..it does take money .

and for me most of the jobs i have had have been the worst conditions for me ..now i am much happier doing what i do now to make money but it is still not ideal or the conditions i need to be the most productive ..but the way i make money ..is my main entertainment and fun and i get to be happy often..though the last few weeks there has been much added stress ..

i like work 8 10 12 or more hours a day and when i find that thing that i can do every day and make much more money than now..i will probably get rich over time

The answer to this question is both subjective and culture-biased.

I would be expecting a lot of high brows for my response, but I'd rather choose to be rich.

For many years, I've been working on the principles of being happy and maintaining it (that's the hardest part though). I grew up in a broken family with not enough finances to bring me to the university. I tried my best to be happy against all odds. But it didn't produce us food to eat.

During my high-school days, I was bullied because they think I am gay. They would call me names that really boiled down my blood. Still, I tried my best to be happy against all odds. But it never changed the perception of the people around me.

When I first got my job, the bills start queuing in. The financial responsibilities came sinking in my pocket. I was exhausted. Still, I tried my best to be happy against all odds. But the bills are still there.

Now I realized, I need to be rich. So there will be enough and overflowing money for me to share to others and spread the happiness.

I need to be rich so that I will not be bullied as gay anymore. Because my riches would tell them otherwise how beneficial and serviceable I am to my community... spreading the happiness.

I need to be rich so that I would never have to waste my energy again in a small task of budgeting my money for the bills to come... and spend my energy instead in building assets that will produce autonomous income, and spread the happiness.

Great response Neil and congrats on taking that journey. That's where your power is -- your story, the lessons you've learned, the skills you've built. Here's something to think about -- trying to be happy (which is the same as striving to be happy or struggling to be happy) is sort of the hard way. "Happy" is a natural thing that happens automatically when you are giving yourself everything you need. In the moment, you may only be able to give yourself self-care, kindness, education, etc. But, as you continue to give what you can, that will grow. What's more important, by doing that, you can tap into the happiness that already exists inside of you (it's already there -- you don't have to create it or try to get it). :-)

A lot of great comments on this so far. To me, it is not either/or choice -- you really can have both. The main thing is -- you have to be happy first, happiness does not come from money or anything external -- it's something already there on the inside - you just have to tap into it. The easiest way to do that is to start loving yourself more -- not in a narcissistic way -but healthy self-love that fills you with happiness.

Neil..trying to be happy is like needing to be rich ..

the more money you make the moore and bigger bills you will have and the more time you will spend managing your money..if you hand it over to somone else to manage..you may not get it back ..

the last month and a half has been real tough ..actually maybe 2 months ..it has been a learning experience for damn sure ..

Honestly though i was bullied a lot growin up .. This will not sound right to type.. but at this point in your life the only people you have to convince you are not gay..if you have no interest in men ..are other men who might think you are gay and show interest .. or women you are interested in..

you are young it could take you 10-20 years to become rich or get the skills to become rich ..do stuff you feel good about doing.. it may feel hard a times and get you tired .but nothing worth doing is always easy to do
