Would you rather be rich or happy?

by 20 replies
hello all

last night while i was working i was chatting with someone a few years older than me who has no money now but had money in the past enough to be rich for a while . now he is in vegas about to be homeless yada yada .. lots of those stories here .

the major bias i have built up over the last year is to limit the number of poor people who get close to me ..or people who have given up and pretty much expect to be poor the rest of their lives .. don't take care of themselves and always have i list of things they really should do but never do. ..and will suck resourse from family friends and government..they will come into your place and grab a drink something to eat .. little things ..

poor people who tell you they are poor and tell you why they are poor will always be poor ..

then there are people who are broke no matter how much money they make they just never have cash on hand .. i am in this stage i have enough to put a roof over my head and buy food and beer ..and pay for internet .. but listening to grant cardone he purposly keeps himself broke despite making what he make .. he gets a huge chunk of money it goes in the bank untill he can invest it in something . so he is broke but wealthy .

rich is up to you .. my definition of wealthy is you have assets that prodce income to support the lifestyle you want ..

now back to the post title the question. would you rather be rich or happy .. i personally argued with him .. that it was not a valid question . if you believe it is an or question.. you have deep seated biases ..it's like beliving there is a choice.. to i do good work that helps people or do i get rich ..

being rich or happy ..if you ask or answer it ..you need to work on your beliefs ..

they are not exclusive ask how can you be happy and get rich .. and how can you do work that really helps people and make good chunks of money

Rich and happy do not have to be exclusive - but at times they are.

I would always choose happiness - except there's not really a choice to be made. If I am happy, I have enough. If I'm not happy, there is never enough.

it really boils down to how you define rich..if it is a dollar figure and you keep moving that figure higher as you get closer..you may never feel rich and probably will not be happy.

i know how to do things that make me happy and i am selfish enough not to think of thing to make me unhappy .. so many people when they start feeling good willturn on the news or search on line for something to put them back in a bad mood ..

to many people have a religious need for personal suffering and as the get more money they also find more thing to be guilty about ..that they might not admit to others ..

i have a global consiousness.. so considering even though by USA standards i am poor by the standard of 90 percent of the human beings on this planet i am rich ..

growing up my parent told me to eat verything on my plate because children in china where starving ..7 years ago i was fat my back was badly injured i couldn't get out of be .. and all the jobs i could do where being sent over to those starving kids .

i make money without having to punch a clock chose when to work and i have lost much weight and my back is much better.. i know how to be happy and know how to build wealth or get rich .. and stay happy.. would i sacrifice happyness to get rich .. no.. i can get happy and be rich..

      I am selfish that way

I would rather be happy. Many people want to be rich as a method to happiness so why not just go straight to happiness?

    Yes, not the best question.

I have had little money for most of my life, and will become rich in the next 5 years.

Does that change me or make me an ars****e, not really.

if anything that will give me the money to do a few things, that the arse***e try to keep a lid on, and cause considerable suffering as a result.

But will l be happier with a few milion, probably, at least it means that in the dead of winter, l can go on a short holiday for a week, to a warm, tropical location.

I am pretty sure that sitting on a chair on my balcony, hearing the waves crashing on the shore, on a warm, tropical night, while sipping a cocktail, knowing that the 3 or 4k, that l spent on this 5 star romp, is being replaced and my bank balance will show little to no difference when l return, will probably make me pretty happy.

You want to distance yourself from poor people in order to help people?

Does that make any damn sense?

i don't mean to sound critical but instead of the 5 star hotel thing .. in most tropical countries you can rent a nice furnished home for about 1 k a month and pay a maid or a gardener about 300-400 bucks a month each and a chef like 30 bucks a day to buy and cook all your food ..

so yeah if you want to live like a very rich person you can do it for 3-4 k a month in a tropical country .. and you can have a fairly luxurious life for 2 k a month .

and you can get your self a gold digging 20 something year old girlfriend who can look like a fashion model .. but you have to grasp that you will not just be supporting her ..but her mom and dad and brothers and sister ..

True, l think that l can hire out a house for $1,500 a week, in AU, not sure about the butler, etc.

      Gold digger, nah!

I believe that, you don't have to choose money or happiness, you can have it all at the same time. i'll rather have it all.

In most cases when people are not happy, is because of they dont have money to do something, and at the other hand most of those who has money they are happy.

Lets be real, if your child is diagnosed with cancer and she need to be operated by specialist doctors, and you are broke, how are you gonna fee when you are poor?
Of cause you will feel like hell.

But is you have money to pay for that operation, Yes you will fell bad but will pay for your kid to get help.
So you need both happiness and wealth.

I think I'd rather be rich man. There are a lot of things you can do with money. Being happy is temporary as being sad.

Money can't buy you happiness, but being broke can't buy you shit.

Give me the money and I'll figure out how to be happy afterwards.

I would rather be happy but its kind of hard to be happy if your not rich, well posses riches, because you need money to survive on this planet just as much as you need water to survive.

good additions to the thread ..

the root of most people money problems at least in the modern western world ..is that people are trying to get rich for the wrong reason..money is as important in modern life as food water air and shelter.. because the money you have dictates the quality .

Where the big flaw is in the money game is .. that many people have this preconceived idea that at some point in the future they will not be able to physically work and earn any more money ..so they are trying to pile it up and earn a lot more than they really need now..before they stop working .

Then you add so much of a persons identity is tied to what they do to earn money ..and once you stop working their is a big loss ..you also need a way to be productive or feel productive to maintain mental health and be happy ..

i see many people who make big chunks of money and then develop bad habits trying to do thing to make themselves happy especially when they are not working any more ..

find work that makes you happy enough that you will want to do it 10 12 14 16 hourse a day ..and chances are you will eventually get rich and or build wealthy.. but you will not stop working at those points ..

Happy moments are the biggest riches we can ever make. For me to be happy is more important.

You can always be happy (no matter what you're going through) because happiness is a choice. (A state of mind.)

So why not be happy and rich? (IMO the "Rich Vs. Happy" proposition is something that "poor" people like to say/believe.)

However the two don't have to be mutually exclusive. In fact they work together. Personally I think what a person does with their money can make them happy. For instance it would bring a great smile to my face to help my Dad (especially) with his bills/mortgage and retirement etc.
