Can We Really Self Teach?

I remember once I had a very cool group of friends I loved hanging out with. I was born and raised in the inner city but these guys and gals were always down to do adventurous and fun activities like water skiing and horseback riding.

Now the day they set out to all go horseback riding at a huge stables I have never rode a horse in my life but do you think I was going to share that? Heck no.

I was ready to go!

We get there and I pick out a horse. INTERMEDIATE.

And I just remember thinking to myself just remember every thing I had ever seen in the movies!

I remembered ...

Let the horse know who is boss!

Make click sounds with my mouth and say come on girl or boy to the horse like we were old friends.

Ride in the rhythm of the horse.

Do not expect the horse to slow down and tell you to Duck!...low branch!

My friends. Let me tell you. I rode the hell out of that horse like a champ!

No way I was going to look like an amateur chump!

So after experiencing all the speeds of riding like Slow trot and then high speed butt off the saddle being chased by a sheriff and his posse mode. This city boy headed for the sunset and the barn.

For years I was always very proud of that day I taught myself how to ride a horse.

But then one day out of the blue it hit me. I did not wear boots I had on sneakers!

Oh the ankles!

So I guess I looked like a amateur chump riding his ass off and having fun that day.

Now if somebody told me they were my doctor and about to perform surgery on me but do not worry because they taught themselves surgical procedures at home...I would dive out the window!

I guess Internet Marketing is somewhere in the middle.

There is plenty we can teach ourselves but there is also a ton that we can learn from others who would save us alot of time and headache.

Has your Marketing experience been more self taught or did you have guidance or both?

For the first few years I spent over $80,000 on courses, books, seminars you name it.

Then I found that everything I had learned was complete crap.

    So, I then self taught.

I now know it comes down to just a few key elements.

    1. Give enormous value.

    2. Traffic

    3. Conversions

    That's really about it.

You know what? I thought it was just me!

I read the Rich Jerk a million times and it was full of great information but maybe I should have just became an affiliate because I never made a dime with it.

Same for sweetheart Rosalind Gardner who wrote Super Affiliate Handbook I got that in 2003! Her book had a ton of useful information but again I should have just promoted it as an affiliate.

Oh well that hindsight is a mofo.

Books;Resources these days should really point a clear path to achieving specific goals to the reader I think.

then you wouldn't need to read another one .. most books fluff you up and get you excited while reading and it soon wears off so you need the next hit ..

i have learned a lot more in the past 15 month hustling n my costume on the las Vegas strip ..but it has been a harsh lesson the last three months as the casinos have been using the cops to put us out of business ..during the time when the money was going to be great ..

i got my rent just in time 2 days ago to avoid being homeless ..

anyway before the cops messed it up and there are people who have become homeless because of it .. i had my image nailed so people where walking up to me asking to take photos but between the cops and my ex roommates girl finding my stash of rent money to months ago .. i have had a rough ride ..

in any case i have found the way to manipulate and push myself to work hard and i have crafted a character ...i actually get away saying silly shit like i do hear to groups of people and getting them to laugh ..

but i have been stuck committing the sin of one ..because i am only making money when i am out hustle .. one way to earn money ..

so many lessons though ..you don't clime the staircase of success you build it as you crawl up the mountain

Odahh I may pull all your comments over the years and make a book out of them!

          Talk about unique Perspectives!

I do not know if you pulling my leg or not but I always try to put myself in the other persons shoes if possible.

If I was in Vegas I would try to make some type of website like NEW VISITORS TO VEGAS.COM
          (that's available by the way!)

Share the best places for family best places for singles. Students. Most generous slots that sort of thing. You will not only make money from adsense, but you can offer your own product, service, and even get the locals to advertise.

If you actually proceed let me know and I will help anyway I can my friend.

Anyway this is the Warrior Forum it is an amazing place like a community and neighborhood and watching ourselves grow up and some end up in jail and some end up on Cover of Time

          Gotta love it.

Life is pushing me on to the next place i need to be , not sure where it is yet . but i never drank before i came here and did this .. now i drink every time i work which is every day . but i don't drink when i am not doing it . .. but because it is 110 degrees i hide inside in AC lol..it's time to get out of Vegas ..if i want to start making and keeping the money i make ..

Many people who make good money i mean several hundred a day.. end up with gabling or drug addictions ..so that is part of why i am just making enough right now.. i have faced and gotten rid of most of my daemons while i was here ..But it is time to Get out before it poisons me .

Instead of writing a book with my posts, because you will drive anyone who tries to edit my posts to be readable for the masses ..i'd be much more interested in seeing the fbi or nsa results of the mental state profile as it has changed over the course of the last 8 years ..

I have put my past behind me or at least I am no creating my present and future from my past any more , theit is a life i want in the future ..i have crawled out of the deep whole i was in now i have most of my foundation built . It time to go to the next stop on the road of life and start working on the first floor of the life i want ..

my biggest regret is i didn't come out here 10 years ago when i first got it in my head to come out here ..but i never had the money , i didn't know what i would do .. so i stayed in a life that was miseable for the 9 years after..and when i finally had the money it lasted 6 weeks and i got into the costume thing to survive ..

Now I am getting that same push to go somewhere else..not sure where , do not know how i will survive .. don't have any money .. but that doesn't scare me .. i am far far far more afraid of the misery that awaits me if i don't go .. if i try to stay here In Las Vegas ....I simply must leap into the abyss of the unknown

I use to be an Expert on why i can't , Know i know there are a lot of thing i can do that i Use to think i could not do ,, now i am an expert on what i must do ..

When i build the Life i want and get my success.. and write my book ..it will start here and now

Sometimes this place breaks my brain.

You can type. You write stuff that pulls the reader in no matter the topic.

You need to be typing for a living my friend.

              What about Fiction?

When was the last time you walked into a physical Book store?

My jaw drops when I see some of the crap that gets published!

I tell people here in Asia that people like me always are researching a place before we visit.

All they have to do is create a simple blog and upload real videos of beautiful places, malls, walking the streets, pretty girls etc.

Then have a FilipinaCupid Affiliate Ad in the side bar that pays them 1000 Pesos every time a guy joins.

              So simple.

I know damn well you see alot of crazy stuff in Vegas. Put it on a blog link it to everything Vegas. then link to Travel and accommodation websites affiliate programs..

              Make a few bucks.

Flip it on Flippa for a nice lump cash.

              Rinse and Repeat.

I can help with domain selection or anything else you need.

i thank you for what you said ..but i really want out of Vegas..it is on a death spiral i have seen many buinesses on the strip close and nothing replace them in the last 14 month ..90 percent of the permoters have been driven off ..and in the last 4 mount 90 percent of the street performers ..and when you hear that casonos are buying other casinos to shut them down ..and the longer list ..the Vegas strip is one of those thing that the change going on is wiping out

if you live in Vegas on part of the strip you can be arrested for stopping to light a cig or bending over to tie your shoe ..it will soon be the whole strip ..if you are a touris they are removing any place you can sit on the strip ..so the strip s for one place that fleeces you . once you leave to get you to the next place to fleece you as fast as possible

Roseland yeah, l promoted that as a backend product, and it did ok, but putting all your eggs in one basket, or all of your effort into one site, nope, didn't work for me.

But l agree that most motivational books motivate, and do little else. Even Rich Dad, Poor Dad, doesn't give out much.

Sure it shows you that staying on the treatmill can be very risky, and creating an asset, or two, before buying stuff is how the rich, become richer and enjoy the good life, well, eventually.

He also crapped on about a great recession, and that hording gold is good, which didn't happen.

But l did make money out of his collection of books eventually, (l sold most of them).

the Gold bugs have been really annoying while china and Indian economies where growing the Chinese government bought lots of gold with it's extra USD ..and population in india naturally store their value in gold .. the last several years gold has gone no where

the main thing motivation books where doing 10 years ago when i stop reading them , was rehashing most of the same info everyone else was ..i mean i never heard one really good vision board story beside the one repeated from the secret .

the truth is all of these people who are in business or motivation worked for their mentors and made them money as they learned from them .. but they don't put that in there stuff .. when they talk about chosing mentors..I think tia lopez is the only one whoo goes into detail because he has a mentor that is helping to change how food is grown around the world joel salitin ..

right now there are great opportunities small scale farming ,back yard farming .and a dozen others ..and you can use web marketing to build a cliant base and distribute your produce..

you learn a hell of a lot more actually doing stuff than studying ....and even painfully slow failures give you such a lot to learn from ..but most people are afraid to fail afraid to put themselves out the for 4 hours and make no money ..it hurts and it sucks

This is Not Sparta! I love it!

You are so on the money I totally agree.

I used to see people dissing Rich Dad Poor Dad and spouting off about there being no Rich Dad. They totally missed the point!

Do not trade hours for dollars. If you can put yourself into a scenario where you get paid each month from real estate as you pay you will be in a much better position. All about that leverage.

Poor Dad had faith in the system of retirement. Bad idea.

It reminds me of People who go around the world telling people to sacrifice and save every penny and wait until they are old to "Enjoy Life".

No where in their presentation do they tell their audiences to become Entrepreneurs and sell books and DVDs and travel around the world promoting them.

So it really is up to us to see the big picture and act on it.

If somebody tells me on a webinar that :"this new $2000 product will change my life".

I think that if you were in Vegas at the moment, you would spend all of your time in the air con, casinos, (it was almost 50digress last week).

My area had a 52.3 digree day once, and l walked through it to the shopping ctr, (10 minutes walk) l literally couldn't breathe every time the wind picket up, it was like God opening an oven, (fan forced oven, lol).

Yes, Poor Dad, got fired, and because he was overqualified, couldn't get another job.

Robert tried to help him, but it was useless.

Save money, lol, yes, that is all you get on tv, this super, (401) fund, makes this much more, and is better, the gov, is worried as not enough are putting into super, blah, blah, blah.

But when you cut the hype and crap, most blow their super and go on the pension, then the ones that reach their 80's, have failing health, and a collapsing house, and are forced to beg for money from their friends and family.

That is why most hard working people have weddings and holidays on the brain, enjoy life, before you don't enjoy life.

A 2k product, some might actually work, but most won't.

I have pretty much adopted RDPD approach to money, so l gave up a 1.5k holiday for a new laptop, (asset) and plenty of other things to achieve my goals.

Which means that l can semi retire by next year, (put 2 days a week in) and be in the top income bracket the following year.

Or in 2019, l can do nothing for months on end, then put a few days a week in to build up income levels.

Big difference between getting up at 6.30 am, and rushing to work, then rushing home through traffic, for an income with a ceiling; and getting up when you want, working at your own pace, and making more and more each year.

OMG you are so right Cynthia. I have learned a ton on WF over the years.

Marketing can be a little cutthroat sometimes that is just part of the mix.

I have seen Product Creators damn near have fistfights with their own customers, I have seen people with 1 post offer a $1000 WSO. I see people get baited into flame matches but I also have seen Newbies become big time ethical earners.

Sure some newbies, crack it within a few years, but it takes most 5 to 7 to find the thing that propels them to online wealth.

It took me 9 years to figure it out!

But time is your savor and your warden.

Work hard for 10 years, and you have fond memories, of 3 or 4 overseas trips, and the odd wedding, and maybe another 30k in your super fund, (that you will blow on a new car, etc) when you retire.

Someone else, risks it all, and spends 10 years online, mainly failing, mainly losing money and mainly losing friends. Then he hits the jackpot, and a few years after that or about 13 years later, is wealthy and becoming more wealthy by the day.

People need to forget the fear society imposes on people in order to chain them to a life of restriction and keeping the economy healthy, in perspective.

Although a wealthy individual usually keeps society healthier through paying more taxes and employing more people.

Gurus might speed up he process, but more likely than not, they will be a stepping stone to the pot of gold.

the meaning of success is changing ..i find the worst element of the im or motivation cult ..is the focus on getting rich and that you can't clain success untill you are rich ..

it went from the make an income and travel and work from the beach or wher you want .. to lock yourself away 12 hours a day ditch all your freind and work hard to get rich .. don't eat nothing you want to eat .. dump your woman if she wants to much time , sleep as little as possible ..

it is also way to focused on why people fail ..ignoring the effect traumatic up bringings have on most people and that most people ..

also in the Us it is easy to ignore millions of legal immigrants who where born in shacks without running water or electricity .. get up here "legally " get jobs and work ..so they may look poor but the jump from that to working renting a house and haveing running water ac and a fridge full of food ..

society is changing fast around the world ..you don't need to own a car you can use uber or other ride share to get around when you need to go anywhere ..you can get a cheap projector for your cellphone and a bluetooth spear in a dark room and stream almost any movie you want to watch ..

most economic growth right now is driven by governments using regulations to drive up costs ..while tech and low infrastructure business . are about to explode and drive costs way down in many areas .

self teach .. i really like watch several you tube vidieos about stuff i am interested in verse having to like go to a book store and dig through 1000 books ..

I am barely hanging on week to week right now ..but i am remarkably calm and getting more at peace with it ...what this has done has forced me to prune down many of my ideas and focus ..

so at this point i want to go somewhere where i can start growing gourmet herbs and spices to sell.. and grow a chunk of my own food come up with my own brand and use many thing i have learned here .. to market them online .

to me it been a type of success that i have not been homeless yet ..but what i am doing i really can't build on..

hey if i am meant to spice u peoples lives i will do it ..haha

Gov, lol, yes, if a quick and easy way is found to create wealth then legislation is usually bought in to kill it of. We cannot have millions of slaves, becoming wealthy and undermining economic growth.

Yes some truth in living in a cave and slaving away, but your friends usually ditch you, or the wives of your friends tell them to ditch you.

And true that a girlfriend would probably become a vampire regarding time, (probably watching dribble on tv, would lose most of it).

A relationship does have its pluses, but l will most likely have to shelve that til next year.

True that l am working hard presently, (about 10 hours a day, minus 3 for dinner, lunch, etc) pretty much every day. Although l take a break every few days.

well the economic model is collapsing and being propped up by fraud in many cases .. the simple fact for the Usa for the government to keep running like it does . is that right now no one has the mony to lend to the government ..as it seem most other countries are now having economic problems ..

looking forward 10 to 15 years ..with the pace the robotics and AI are rolling out around the world half the jobs now being done by human will be done by robots and ai .. and there is a huge crash in birth rates or fertility rates around the world ..

right now the model for most people is you go to a job earn money ..and then use that money to buy everything you need ..

rapidly the model is changing because a lot of the new tech allows you to produce a good chunk of what you consume ..and drops the cost of what you do consume .. but no one is really talking about this or the implications ..and those that are are screaming the sky is falling ..

where you will be able to produce a good amount of what you consume you will also produce extra to sell or give away ..

think about what your doing tag ..in a brick an mortar to take home what you do.. you would probably need 1-2 million in revenue and several employees ..but because you work out of your house ..you don't really need that bmw to drive to work ..you can go shop and fill your fridge with food .. and make you breakfest lunch dinner ..instead of having to grab food from a take out place ..

what happens when you can have solar panels on your roof that provide all your power needs and if you lived in a house that was designed to need as little heating or cooling as possible ..and you produce a good chunk of your food on your property ..so you drop the cost of living down a lot ..

right now it's called homesteading but as tech makes it much easier .. it will just be how people live in the physical world ..the people who don't take themselves out from suicide drug overdose or some self inflicted disease from bad diets .. for the people who don't find a way to be productive in the real world .. they will probably hook themselves into VR every waking hour they can ..until their bodies stop working from not moving ..

    Oh the ankles!

You didn't know how to ride, but the horse did. You didn't teach yourself anything. The horse was just used to having guys who didn't know how to ride...riding him.

Most ventures need to be learned from someone else......a good teacher can shave a decade off your learning curve. And if you are self taught, you won't know the difference between a stylistic difference and a costly mistake. I speak from experience.

you are one of the few on this board ..i usually fully agree with ..

the piss poor education system in the western world ..has given people a false view of a good teacher ..or mentor ..as someone who needs to lecture you or hold your hand for months ar a time until you get it ..

when i see you say a good teacher ..i am thinking you are saying someone who can in a few hour or a few days teach you how to improve what you are doing and get better results ..

Exactly. I don't mean gurus that write books on subjects they aren't expert in...or guys that produce WSOs if they aren't using the model they are selling....

I mean expert consultants that can, in an hour, show you the ten things you are doing that are killing your results...and can save you a decade or more of "trying to figure it out".

These people are exceptionally rare. In my life I've had two such mentors. I worked for one for six months, and with one for about the same....completely changed my game.

One good rule of thumb in searching these people out is asking, "Who does everyone in the industry hate?"

That's the one doing the impossible, right now.

One of the critical thing i have learned in the last 2 years ..is mentors are nearly worthless unless you bring them in after you have started doing something or you work for them and make them money mentoring you ..

personally i diverge from the why work for someoneone and get them rich meme ..I feel that if you are going to work for anyone ..it's the best if you are working for someone getting rich ..

at this point the money has drained out of what i am doing and i am close to zero ..no assets no real debt ..just means i got nothing to lose ..i understand the next business i want to be in..it is just where i don't know yet ..and it will be growing herbs and spices .. then distributing them with online marketing .. bypassing stores ..

I will have my eyes out for anyone i feel can give me advice to do things better ..once i have it started ..at this point it is where do i want to build this and how do i start ..hell even if i somehow find someone to work for who does it ..i'll work for crap wages if it mean i learn fast as hell ..

When I first started in business online, there wasn't really that much formal training or online tutorials available, so I'm self-taught to a large extent.

I did subscribe to about every online marketing ezine and discussion list that I could find, and I read/participated in that discussion regularly.

As courses and then tutorials became more readily available, I learned more from the training created by others... and I continue to do that to this day.

What I find most effective though is getting my hand on some course, or say video training and then actually going through that training, less-by-lesson, actually doing what is being taught... several times. After doing that, I honestly feel like I have mastered the topic, and I then start actually using it.

The danger that I see many people (newbie, intermediate and even advanced) succumb to is trying to learn how to do everything. At some point you sorta have to tell yourself that you've learned enough for now, and then start using what you've learned. If you do that properly, you also find that you no longer need to learn many of the newer things because you can then readily afford someone else to do many things FOR YOU.

My short answer is that you can self-teach yourself, but you need to then verify things over and over again by actually doing them and constantly evaluating the results.

A question that eventually comes up is "Who taught the guy that invented this thing?". I mean any marketing course, system, information product. Even the guys that create courses used in colleges.. Aren't they self taught?

Eventually, if you go back far enough, you'll find someone who is largely self taught.
    The first.

What isn't usually known is that this person is usually exceptionally bright, and has dedicated decades to mastering their craft. And they have committed all the mistakes that you can avoid...and all the time wasted on techniques that eventually are proven not to work...that you can avoid by simply reading what they have to say.

For $10 you can buy a book on a subject that is written by a real expert...who has been through everything you are going through...and has paid the price for everything they know. And you can shave decades off your learning curve...by simply following their advice.

    added later;
Not everything can be self taught. I studied Kung Fu for 8 years of hard training (a million years ago).

Whenever I see someone that claims to be an expert, I can tell in one move...less than a second...if they are "self taught". Everything they do is wasted motion.

Would anyone want to be treated by a self taught doctor? How long would it take for someone to teach themselves, by trial and error, everything that doctors learn in medical school? A hundred years? Longer?

funny you mention doctors ..what i have heard is that in medica school you can be taught howto do any surgery in a few hours ..it just take years to learn how to react and fix the thousands of different things that can go wrong ..

now when it comes to the first one to do it ..any idea that has its time is given to tens of thousand of people at once ..and one person eventually does it .. Edison got his patent for the light bulb in just hours and days before other inventors .. and those bicycle mechanics or builders who made flight possible .. where just weeks ahead of a team in Europe .

we live in Amazing times ..people don't half to self teach ..there is a thousand ways to learn anything you may want to learn ..it is a matter of learn do .. improve ..learn to do it better ..the education system has broken us ..or the learning cycle ..so you learn learn learn and never do ..

I think when i played world of warcraft i think a million people relearned complex or advanced math so they could figure out how much extra damage they could do with a small change in gear ..

This is the best time to be alive in human history if you put everything together and learn how to creat the life you want ..and plus there are so many how to videos for anything.. easty to find..you do not have to self teach .

Personally i will be happy in 10 years when i have my tricorder(star trek reference but the xprise for the basic device has been won) like device so i can scan myself every day ..to know what disease might be present or scan some pretty lady before we um .. to make sure no diseases are present ..

I don't cry about my past i am doing what i can to create my life based on what will be possible in the near future and was is possible now that was not 5 years ago ..

the current economic and success/failur model is currently getting pulled apart ..as more and more people are fleeing the system ..if someone lives offgrid and produces all their power and most of their own food ..and only need to spend 500 dollars a month on expenses ..are they a failure .

I'm completely self taught in software development.

I went from HTML, JavaScript, SQL + databases, ASP and now C#/Angular.JS without a single training course.

How do YOU add a feature to your blog or website? Just roll up your sleeves, search for the answer in a book or online and cut and paste some code. That's how I learnt.

More self-taught including lesson gained from multiple mistakes along the way. In fact, I learned so much from my mistakes that I have remained open to making as many as I can (...and I've been marketing online for a fair bit now!).

I've also invested in myself with people I believed I could learn a thing or two from and they haven't always been what we generally refer to as "gurus" either.

Some people have just had interesting perspectives on existing methods or products and you can always learn a thing or two if you're open to it.

Always always always self taught with the guidance of those that have gone before me. Some of the most successful people are self taught and that isn't new.

If you want something, you'll seek the knowledge you need and the experience you need. Most of the time, this is self taught with guidance from others and for me, it's self taught through tons of mistakes and adjustments.

I think that a combination of being self taught and having guidance are key. Having the guidance will surely help you as others that have experience are able to say what has worked for them. However, when you are self taught, you learn what works well for you.

    Yes, absolutely.

One of the big challenges is that we tend to want answers, results and all the great things we desire instantly.

That desire for instant gratification (not only in the IM, MMO world) is the bog barrier to successful self-teaching and self-learning.

Many start off on the right path but get impatient and as a result jump on to the next great looking thing.

As a coach, consultant and transformation professional I see this happening all the time...and I admit I was once in a similar phase in my life when building my career. So I get it.

Add int the mix the fact that there are have ever been in our history and it seems to make sense, but that doesn't make it right.

If anyone is serious about teaching themselves what hey need to know to do the things they need to do to get the results they want to get my advice is to FOCUS.

i think there is a better term than instant gratification ..or delayed gratification ..i would say either insured or assured gratification ..

you pointed out mmo worlds and games ..and real gamers will grind for dozens of hours or even weeks or months to get certain results as long as they have a formula ..that says something like i need 200 of these tokens to craft a legendary piece ..i run certain dungeons and get 10 tokens a day ..in 20 days i have the tokens i need ..if i have 8 different slots to upgrade that is 160 days of grinding every day .

many games had these kinds of mechanics .. maybe not on the timescale but they where there in some ways ..but it is only a smal number of gamers who will hold out that long or work that hard in a game ..

most people who are able to practice delayed gratification. have reframed their gratifaction mechanics ..where they are getting plenty of gratification in the moment ..while putting some off into the future ..

like someone who knows how to make real good lasagna that taste better the next day and the day after that .. who learns to make enough lasagna for three days of meals ..rather than just one day.

most fortunes are built though..by satisfying the instant gratification needs of others .

The power of the Cosmic Master the hypnotist can dramatically change reality. You have to give a go of any negative emotion, have clear goals and dive deep in hypnosis. Self teaching will come as a byproduct. And be eternally grateful doing that. Be grateful everyday and move on to the next level and never look back. Program the mind and leave no traces. Aka leave the past behind and welcome change.

We can definitely self teach but it depends on the motivation you have to actually learn what you are "trying" to learn

  • Mine has been a guidance of both.

Before I started internet marketing, I had some idea of it because of ads I would see and how they were structured. So I dove in with the basic knowledge and as things started needing some scaling done, I hopped into a course to really take off.

I believe internet marketing is self explanatory until you need to scale.

Stop sucking eggs and get down with your goals, slow and steady wins the race.

That means having a to-do list and then get down with it. It's all about piecing the missing pieces of the puzzle together.
