Do You Need Courage? 5 Things I Do To Get Over My Fear

Dear Warrior,

Do you need more courage in your life?

Is your business not getting you where you want to be?

One of the most profound ideas I learned in college was that the events in our lives are the result of inner energy and thought. Without getting too spiritual or new age, what we believe really becomes true. If you think you can...I mean TRULY believe that things will happen...they will.

Or so it has in my life.

So here's what I do when I feel scared and lacking courage.

1. Live the Failure Before It Happens...

I basically live the nightmare scenario of the task/idea going totally to hell. If I can deal with it...and can push through the fear barriers...I take the action.

This prevents you from analyzing things. If you imagine the worst and can deal...then minor problems just don't bother you anymore.

I did this with my online biz...could I succeed? What if I failed? What if I spent 2k or 20k and lost ALL of it? I decided I could pick up and come back from the failure...so I started my business.

2. Talk to People Who Believe in You

These people will psych you up and provide strength through adversity. These are the people you call if you're life is on the line...and who you know will save your ass in a pinch.

Don't have these people? Be open to finding these people anywhere. It takes trust but if you trust people...you'll get burned. However, you'll also find that people come through in ways you'd never imagine.

I met all my mentors and partners this way. I trusted them before they earned it. Most people turned out to be alright. Therefore I had a glut of partners (a good glut to have ).

So give people a chance and they will be there for you. Find the courage to share your feelings, anxiety, and problems and you'll have no trouble taking a new risk on business.

3. Take a Break

Big decisions shouldn't be made on impulse. That's a formula for failure. However, when you're in analysis mode for too long...it's easy to develop tunnel vision. So get out of there and take a break.

Go for a beer.

Go for a movie out with your spouse or significant other.

Anything to clear your mind.

Then come back and make a choice. You've taken the time to think and gotten a clear mode. You're in decision mode. So MAKE IT! Courage comes when you make a decision and see it through.

4. Make Success the Only Option

Usually, if you work your ass off and pour your blood, sweat, and tears into something...you'll have success.

Now, it might not be wealth, time, or both of those. It might be experience. However, that experience is priceless. Therefore, even the biggest "failures" can be the biggest sucesses, when seen through the lens of a long time horizon and some perspective.

I failed at a network marketing business my first year of college. I failed again at it my junior year of college.

Why did I fail? I didn't put enough trust in myself to implement the system. Who knows if it worked or not. I'll never know because I didn't truly give it a shot.

Sure I "tried," made a few calls, attended meetings and conferences...

But I didn't eat, sleep, breathe, and LIVE my business...

In short, I didn't make success the only option.

However, I got the most valuable "success" through these failures. I learned that to truly be sucessful at something, you have to LIVE it. The heartache, missed opportunities, mistakes, failures, successes, tears, and ultimately, toasting your success with a nice stiff drink and cigar (haha...I was getting a bit too serious there...this isn't a movie)

5. Lighten up Sometimes

Wow, this one is the hardest so I saved it for last. I fail at this one too much. One could consider me an overachiever. I work hard. I focus on something to the point of excluding other things...even those things that are important to me.

So, last week, I went to the beach. No business...no computer...no lists...no ANYTHING.

I laid on the beach with my girlfriend, got a nice tan, and had all you can eat crab legs and some tropical drinks.

It was just the refresher I needed.

Any time you are lacking courage, it is either one of two things. Either you're not risking enough...or you're tired.

When you're tired...lighten up and go have fun. Business will always be there to be had. If you can't do this, then you're a slave to your business. End of story. So, catch it before it's a problem.

So there you go Warrior. If you follow these tips, I'm sure they will help you find the courage to succeed.

I want to extend an invitation to ANY reader of this post to send me an email (bjs380 at gmail.com) or PM me with your thoughts. Or feel free to simply post your thoughts below.

    Brad,

Thanks for the ideas. I agree if you can look at the worst case scenario and accept it, then you have no reason to fear the adventure.

Some folks are afraid of it being successful and all that may come along with it.

Some thoughts for these folks might be to imagine themselves achieving all the success exactly as they want it to be and how great it feels.

I see myself first as accomplishing my goal. Then I work backward from that to find the steps I need to get in the right order so that I can accomplish my goal. The steps are small so that if I do have an issue with being courageous or nervous or anything like that, I just look at my plan (the next step) and say "Oh, that's such a small step, I can do that " Yhis works pretty well for me.

      JMichaelZ-

A great plan for doing that. Baby steps is a huge method for getting things done and getting over the big fear.

One reason it works so well is that it gets to the root cause of fear which leads to procrastination.

That cause is "will it work?"....

If you were guaranteed to hit the powerball...would you play every time? Of course you would.

So baby steps take a lot of the worry and stress out of tasks.

I have used this many a time...and it helps to build momentum...which leads to results...

      Thanks for sharing!

It's interesting that people are thinking of using courage as a means of coping with fear or anxiety as it tends to presuppose that the anxieties will continue, hence the need for special resolve to overcome them.

Let's consider what anxiety really is. Humans are born with an inbuilt defense system which aims to protect them when a threat is perceived. Also known as the "fight or flight response" or the 'stress response", it is part of the autonomic nervous system, which means that it is automatically activated when we recognize a threat - adrenaline is released, blood withdraws from the surface of the skin, the heart pumps faster, breathing becomes more rapid to increase the intake of oxygen, we become very alert to possible danger, nutrients are released for muscular activity, etc.

Although the "fight or flight response" was only recently described (in 1915, by Walter Cannon) it obviously had been present in our ancestors for thousands of years and played an important part in their survival. Those fearless cavemen who were willing to go eyeball to eyeball with T-Rex and saber-toothed tigers we can assume did not survive long enough to pass down their genes to current generations.

In other words, the "fight or flight response" prepares our body for action, whether it is to stand our ground when faced with danger, or to get the hell out of there!

In the absence of the sort of predators our ancestors faced, the feelings and tensions produced by our bodies can also be activated by our perception of numerous other threats, many of them merely conceptual, or imaginary. If we are about to be run down by a car whilst crossing the road, this is an obvious physical threat and, as soon as detected, our reflexes kick in to save us.

When we imagine that people are criticizing or gossiping about us, or that we're about to sacked from our job, or our partner is having an affair, and the like - these are perceived threats our bodies respond to, even though they may be factually untrue. When we form an opinion about the nature of the world around us, our nervous systems respond to this "truth". Needless to say, we spend much our waking moments gathering information and making decisions about the world we experience. What we accept as true, our bodies will respond to.

When we don't have direct experience, we tend to rely on the opinions of "authority" sources - friends, newspapers, TV, teachers, parents, etc, in forming an opinion about the nature of the world around us.

Hence millions of people once thought it to be perfectly reasonable to believe that the world was flat and that Earth was the center of the Universe. Who knows how many ships toppled off the end of the world when they sailed beyond the horizon!

So, many of the feelings of stress and anxiety that we experience are natural responses to anticipated threats to our wellbeing - problems. If we believe we are losing money on the internet, our spouse is about to leave, and our kids hate us, we react with a sense of alarm and tension.

However, if we're expecting to be invited to Hugh Hefner's mansion (that's for the guys), to win the lottery, get a promotion at work, receive a proposal of marriage, inherit a fortune from a distant relative, meet the partner of our dreams, make a million bucks on the internet, etc - that's exhilarating. We're enthusiastic about our expected windfall, the sun shines brighter and the world appears to be a much happier place.

Those who feel success upon them also become more aware of, more alert to the opportunities that are opening up - they see more of their wants appearing to be possible. At such times, if only it were possible to clone ourselves to take advantage of the opportunities!

It would seem that learning to habitually perceive those things we want (goals) rather than what we don't want (problems) would have enormous benefits - less stress and anxiety; more constructive, creative action; a continuing sense of wellbeing; the chance to enjoy enthusiasm and passion rather than anxiety and despair, etc.

That these attitudes can be learnt is certainly possible. That they can be taught is definitely possible. There are many techniques and programs that will teach attitude change and are not just temporary, bandaid solutions. For instance, learning how to use affirmations correctly, self-hypnosis, even prayer can work for some.

One technique I used to teach, which was very effective, was to design affirmations to look for what is really WANTED when faced with a problem ('what do I really WANT?') and that this would be prompted by a small white spot on the face of a watch (or cell phone) so that whenever the person learning new attitudes looked at their watch, they would think of the affirmation - just for a few seconds. There is also software available which will do something similar - it displays affirmations on the computer screen while you work.

So I see courage as a fallback solution, in many cases. In the absence of fear and anxiety, courage isn't required and, if it is, that may be the signal we are focusing on problems rather than the outcome we really want. Enthusiasm is energizing and far more satisfying!

Thank you for the great post, especially about making success the only option.

I don't have a 'normal job' like everybody else, so if I fail this, I'm doomed. Right now I'm living and breathing my business, and it's actually a good feeling, keeping me motivated.

    Wish me luck, guys.

Hi Brad, thanks for your great tips.
Courage is really important in our road to success.
This is especially true in decision making.
Some people knows that they can make a lot of money if they want to,
but they just don't have the courage to make that decision.

I read something about focus recently and it totally changed my work habits.

Your body starts to stress if it's been sitting working solid for 1.5 hours or more. You become less effective as time goes on due to stress hormones.

This is why breaks are important.

      Do some pushups

Take a 20 min walk around the block or office.

      Call a friend

      Listen to some relaxing music

Anything to calm your body and let it reset itself.

Thanks for bringing this one up!

      Cheers,

If you expect something to happen, it is more likely to actually come true.

The Law of Attraction is very true.

However, "expecting" isn't the best way of putting it I think. Taking action steps and KNOWING they will work is better than expecting. You gotta make it happen and the law of attraction helps it come true. However, it's started from your action and putting the energy there. You can't just believe...you gotta do it.

Your quote though is true...that prevents so many problems.

            Brad,

            I 100% agree with you.

I may not mention ACTION, but yes, thats the most important step . Its when you're taking action, that you really have to expect that it will work.

A lot of other variables are involved, but if everything else is equal and in place- you're more likely to succeed if you expect it to happen, then if you are unsure or uncertain.

I would also like to bear my testimony of cold beer.

I hit this morning hard for 5 hours straight, a buddy also on break asked if I wanted to meet down the road for a beer, and now I'm back, relaxed, and ready to knock out the rest of my day.

Though I think taking breaks is the gist of the moral, a local seasonal ale makes a great embellishment!
